David Astbury, Thank You

Reasonable effort by Dave.
The good news is he'll get better with each game and - injuries permitting - will be a very decent FB by mid year.

That's what I'm thinking. No injuries for a full season a must.

Won a few contests took a few marks and made a few spoils. Was calm down back. And beat his man.
Good game tonight, Much better than we get from Chaplin.
Just hope he doesn't get dropped after 1 bad game.

I thought Dave was okay tonight. Took some very nice marks and showed signs that he can definitely hold down a key defensive role as long as he stays fit. Will keep Chaplin out for at least another week.

Astbury releases Rance. There's no way Chaplin could have played on Casboult, who is one of the best contested marks in the league. This is the difference between Astbury and Chaplin. He's better for our structure as we can go into games confident even if the oppo has 2 good key forwards. Grimes gets the third.

Solid n composed game from the *smile*. Back half was under the pump all night as our mids got smashed n Carlscum spread n ran brilliantly.
Hoping he gets a full season of games together as he's a pretty decent footballer, just needs some injury luck.

he's definitely a better option than Chaplin.

Still skeptical. It will be interesting to see how he goes on someone like Kennedy

A few years back he towelled up Cloke.
Gets the chance again next week and may go a long way to a Tiger victory.

Wouldn't Rance take Kennedy and leave Astbury to take the next forward?

possibly. but that knocks Harry's thesis on the head that he releases Rance.

It depends on who we're playing. If they have a gun forward, Rance is the bloke who usually goes to them.
dont tell me. tell Harry!

I reckon horses for courses.

Rance gets the mobile big - Darcy Moore, Astbury gets the gorilla/monolith - Cloke. Grimes the next tallest.
If either has an off day, try change it round.

Astbury had 7 intercepts (2nd most), Rance had 8. Also took 2 contested marks. Played his role successfully. You wouldn't be unhappy throughout the season if he could hold the #1 forward to 3 shots at goal every week. Admittedly Casboult is no super star but you can only beat the player you are given.

Be interesting to compare where Astbury is at compared to Rance at similar stage. Rance was a whipping boy for his first couple of seasons for the much the same reason people are bagging Astbury now.....but Astbury has had his development hindered by injury. I'd like to see him get a good run at it this season....he reads the play well, can take a mark and has some size. Hopefully his decision making and execution will improve over time. It certainly did with Rance.

Add composure, has always seemed to have had it for much of the game. Almost laconic in style at times, not much fuss, first option footballer.
