David Astbury, Thank You

The only time it's bad to play footy at a young age is if your body can't handle it.

Astbury's body seems like it can handle the load (and so does Post's).

Because that seems like the case, there will be no repercussions in coming years.

True, and he has been protected as well. I haven't seen him get too bashed up at all this year.

Thought another promising game yesterday. I reckon we have one key position backman sewn up for the future. He has what it takes and is performing remarkably well for a tall in his first year.

Gunna be a star this kid. Rare to see a tall player that young with a game so rounded like Dave's.

Almost dual sided which is pretty rare as well.

was watching him yesterday in amazement. his smarts and ability to use his body in a contested situation are almost the best ive seen even if he doesn't touch it, he always manages to play it to his teammates advantage and then still lays a shepherd

this kid is fast becoming our MVP. well done frankie J and co

and i still cant believe how well he moves for a genuine 195 kpp

Well lets leave the kid alone, before we put the moz on him!
martin and david have been really good this year, and not far behind web and nicky nason!
if can add 2-3 this year of his this calibre we will be going places in the next 2-3 season.

Agree 100%. He has been a shining light of the year, and when is he going to get a rising star nomination?????

Agree. He's definitely taller than Jack so could easily hold down one of the key defensive roles in future.
Can't wait to see him when he fills out. Just soo smart.

Quite amazing he hasn't yet isn't it?

Just think of the uproar if he played for Collingwood?

There was an uproar when Blight didn't get a nomination after his first game. ::)

They still haven't gotten over Pearce and Raines finishing ahead of Shaw.

He is not flashy enough to catch the eye but is a good competent player who does his stuff consistently well and abouve all is reliable. Definitely a find

Looks like the only way to have a player nominated for the Rising Star award is to b!tch about it to the AFL a la the Western Poodles.

I think a few weeks ago after a win, Dimma may have mentioned that Astbury deserved a nomination in his press conference.

Really like DA.

One bit of play yesterday caught my eye. He had the ball at HB close to the boundary - was in the 2nd or last qtr, can't remember. Under pressure, he kicked with his left out on the full. A minute later, same position on the ground, same pressure, same foot...hit an inch perfect pass finding a fellow RFC player. Learnt from his mistake immediately. We have 15 or so others who have been on the list for years who make the same mistakes over and over...was very pleasing to see we got this one right.

Have spoken to him a few times now also - great kid. Hope he continues to improve - if he does, we have a genuine A grader on our hands.

It wasn't a dominant display from David yesterday, but it was the little things that he did, easing his player under the ball, spoiling a contest and getting the ball to running player - I'm sure Leppa would be rapted with his development this year. Shows good poise and good skills and can take a nice grab.

I'm still convinced that when McGuane came back in against the Roos and they moved David to the forward line that it unbalanced the backline. They made the switch after halftime throwing David back and Luke forward, but the game was shot by that stage.

True, but I don't think we went crying to the AFL about it.

reads the play well, very composed and has huge upside... body still has to fill and should be a gem

Well based on the photo's on the training thread it looks like David is starting to fill out nicely.

I think Astbury is the most important player on our list as well look to the future. I hope the club puts all our resources into developing him into the player he could become.

The question is though what is his best position. I understand that he is being groomed as a CHB and I think it would be fantastic if he could hold down this position and make it his own long-term.

I just have my doubts however about the make up of our forward line going forward and wonder whether long term we might be better served with him up forward with Jack. I guess the fact that Griffith's is still such a huge question mark makes me wonder whether Astbury might end up as our CHF.

I really hopes Grimes also comes on as I think his development might ultimately play an important role in deciding where Astbury ends up playing. The development of Grimes into a key defender would give us a lot more flexibility in where we play Astbury.

In the end, I guess it's just great to have a player that looks capable of being develolped into a Key Position at either end of the ground.

I really felt that David looked much more comfortable down back and was a little lost the times he was put into the forward line when guys like Moore or McGuane were back from injury.

I hope they persevere with him down back - it will be interesting to see where they play Wil & Luke this year. Luke might find himself forward a little more often and Wil will be under the pump all year to either reinvent himself down back otherwise he could find himself playing extended periods in the VFL.

i reckon dave is one of our most important players and we need to put heaps of time into developing him. if he can build up he could be come a bock type chb with his height. we have lacked that good size chb for many years
