Damien Hardwick

He shouldn't escape criticism fullstop. Our preseason was a mess you could see early signs poor skills and kicking , not enough innovation in our game plan , players out of position or poor moves during the games and poor team selection.

How many times we hear the same thing in his press conference we need to do this better etc yet it's the same story weekly.
But he went to the US for a sobriety.
What the *smile* is a sobriety??
We had Arthur Dunga running our preseason..
I've never seen a group/team start a season in such bad shape.
A kid pops a hammy in Feb its June and he is no where to be seen.
Lynch has foot issues over the Sumner and they allow him to start the season and then 3 weeks later he breaks his foot and now looks like the Season is over.
Some decisions made over the summer put us on the back foot from the start and we have been swimming against the tide ever since.
This needs a internal review what happened over the preseason??

No offence Danny, but this always makes me smile. A coach being candid and coming up with genuine innovative solutions in a post match? Its a whacky idea. It comes up often and always reminds me of an ancient skit on a long-forgotten Aussie comedy show, I've forgotten which one it was. Maybe the Late Show? Maybe that Andrew Denton Comedy sports show from the 90s? Tim Watson was still playing and gave an honest interview in the rooms after a game, one of the funniest things I've ever seen. "I was red-hot but these blokes (pointing at his team mates) were all shithouse".

Agree preseason was a mess looked unfit and behind the ball park. Didn't understand why he was in the US when preseason started had all that time off. I said it before our fitness and injury rehabilitation is ordinary took short cuts there.

The buck stops with coaching mate. Like I said preseason was the worst I had seen in age's fitness wise , skills etc sign's were there and the way injuries handled. Not blaming him for everything , but his coaching hasn't been great this year.

Any example or not of Good coaching or 'bad coaching by Dimma last saturday makes no difference to my argument. Dimma is battling away with the hand he's got, and its not a great hand. He's trying different things and has an eye on the future, but some things are gunna work and some aren't in any given game and he'll be praised and bagged accordingly.

Scapegoating and banishing Cotchy to the seconds for the rest of the season ah la Spud and Knighter, to me that would be bad coaching. Some people might crack the champaign and give Dimma job for life. Gifting games to Sonz when he's played lazy and timid, I'm not a fan of that idea, some are.

You've made up your mind it seems. Go for your life.

I have an opinion, I'm open to being convinced otherwise.

I haven't expressed an opinion on Cotch being in the side or not. Sonz had to be dropped, no argument.

But when I'm told that Dimma has been coaching the lights out all season but no-one can give me an example of when or how apart from the ones I volunteered myself, sorry, that's not convincing.

No worries at all. As I said from the outset, you may be right, but you can drive a truck through your argument. My argument is based on the reality of where the list is at, and AAA credit in the bank. But I could be wrong.

100% agree there is plenty of evidence he did not present the team fit to play from early preseason. Coaches responsibility.
Playing unfit players is another Coaching fail.
This is the worst I have seen from Hardwick since 2016. Then he admitted he was at fault. Needs to accept responsibility. apologize and get back to the grindstone.
There is no shortcut to success.

When your coach is lamenting poor skills ( no *smile* Sherlock) and it's been that way for a number of seasons, how is that being innovative?

He literally said we watched their 2nds and knew what they were going to do and they just couldn't stop it?

Can't blame fans for wanting better.

I take the point. And don't have a problem with criticism, just the level, tone and reasoning at times. Some is legit, a lot isn't. Who really knows? None of us are in the inner-sanctum. All we can go on is our own observations. My own view is everyone, including Dimma overrated the list at the start of the season, it happens. Young players not being as good as we'd hoped, the old stars slowing a bit more than we'd hoped, injuries have caused a rapid re-assessment. Thats where we're at. I can't really see much, if anything, that could have been done differently to change things. Dimma is furiously adjusting and assessing, he's the one I want doing it, lets see how we go.

I didn't say he was being innovative, I said nobody ever says anything in post match press conferences.

We all want better. But legit criticism and going off on half-cocked rants after an infuriating loss (we've all done it!) are two different things.

One actual forward in the forward line and he is banged up and the only tall.
All other forwards better known for playing midfield or wing or defence.
To be an effective forward at this level is so specialised - Pickett, Cotch , Dusty, Prestia, Mansell, Samson all part time forwards.

Collingwood- Ash Johnson, Mihocek, Elliott all forever forwards.
Cumberland and Baur have to play at least until Lynch comes back

Mijocek played nearly all his junior footy as a defender (under 18 all aus CHB) along with most of his VFL footy at Werribee and Port Melbourne prior to being drafted.

Yes but at least he was a tall back switched forward - we don't have one of them in our mix - just onballers, Pickett and Mansell

Throw in the small specialist Bobby Hill at the Pies as well. Hoskin-Elliott could be called a winger but has been forward for a long time

I think the frustration is the manner of the losses to the Gold Coast & Essendon.

I think it was Mr Redord that pointed out how Longmire's teams seem to beat us the same way. And now we have the Gold Coast & Essendon beating us with a defensive flooding, high uncontested possession ball retention strategy. Dimma acknowledged it but did FA about it.

Ultimately our older players are no longer good enough to carry us and injuries have *smile* us. We need our best side on the park every game to compete with the better sides. But it would be nice to lose a different way.

Who knew it was the senior coaches job to teach players how to kick? I thought they learned that coming up through juniors. You don't teach senior players to kick. They either can or they can't when you draft them, and for the vast majority, that's how it stays.

Our coaches need to re-examine the odd positions that many of our players are being asked to play in and the instructions they are given. Dow, Pickett and Short are examples and our forward entries to packs makes it so easy for defenders to cut off. I see forwards leading but then ignored. An interview in The Age with Essendon's Head of Football, Josh Mahoney is relevant....he explains why they appointed Scott - "...he's a development coach, loves seeing improvement in players, but he's also big on taking responsibility for what happens on field. ...if the players are not doing what we want them to do, then (Scott's philosophy is) the coaches need to get to work, change the way they are teaching and the language they're using. That's refreshing for players to see."
I hope Dimma has taken note.

Internal discussion would be on the agenda with Dimma , any professional club would do so .
Dimma says l want to stay for a 're build or he goes years end ...
( l F hope so ).
4 year plan on the white board , draft picks next 5 years , free agent a priority .
Tigers CAN get back to where we all want them
, but need to be very smart.

Dimma should take coaching lessons off Brad Scott? Interesting take.
