Damien Hardwick

Ryan looked good in that number one ruck role with Miller backup and this was my fear we abandon it to make room for Nank because his a captain poor coaching for me.

Nothing lasts forever. He's done his job and we are forever in his debt. But it is time to move on.

Last week was an aberration. The win against the Eagles was meh; who doesn't beat them? The performances of the team since the 2020 GF and been unacceptable. Especially the continual losses in so many close games; most of them to clearly inferior opposition.

Yeah. I think that’s a picture that’s beginning to get traction. He’s been awesome. But we might need to start planning and thinking of the next era without him.

Think I could handle him seeing out his contract if he bought into a succession plan though.

I agree that what’s happened since 2020 has been sub standard. I’m not sure punting Hardwick is the solution though - unless by his own admission he’s run out of enthusiasm and/or ideas.

Assuming he wants to continue, we need better assistants around him. We’re like a lost dogs home for sacked coaches at the moment.

Plus the major issue is the playing list and the game plan being given to it. Structure is all wrong relative to the ability of the list relative to the possession based game plan. Hardwick can correct that as long as he’s sees our current situation for what it is.

Seems to me the results since 202o show he is running out of ideas. No one comes close to us when it comes to blowing close games. How long does it continue?

Possibly. Depends on the replacement. Apart from Leppitsch, I’m not sure who could do better.

Bigger issue is in player recruitment, development & strength/conditioning imo
Zero wins from 12 games under a goal result is down to coaching in a major way. He keeps saying we will learn but clearly we don't. He's done. McCrae is killing it as a second year coach. Did well in his first year. There are others out there. We took a punt on Dimma; we can take a punt on another coach. He doesn't necessarily get to coach us for the rest of his life; espeically not with what we have thrown up since 2020. When do you call time?

That's not to say we don't have other issues as you mention. Clearly we do. The obsession with recruiting flankers as an example. Clark can follow Dimma at the end of the year.

Agree it’s a pathetic record in close games & we’ve learnt nothing. But those losses to me are symbolic of our list - starts with a first ruck that negates at best and doesn’t create; midfielders that lose centre clearance too often plus overall foot skill deficiency that means we can’t maximise forward movement/entry or score enough whilst routinely giving the ball back.

I am going to be very clear about this.

Hardwick can still coach the lights out.

He doesn’t have the cattle.

IF he is still fresh and engaged - IF - there is no question that he handles the transition and beyond.

Absolutely none.

I will also posit this -

In 2023, Damien Hardwick is prisoner to his loyalty to Cotchin, Riewoldt, Martin and Nankervis.

Trying to hide them all in our system-based game plan is not working and there’s nothing he can do about it.

Yes, these players will occasionally bob up. Martin is building slowly, Cotch and Jack have flashes.

But are the latter two and Nankervis helping the team overall?

They are just. Too. Slow.

This ain’t on Hardwick. This is the price of dynasty.

Please let’s not assume that Hardwick is also cooked. A dangerous assumption when we are talking about such an experienced, talented educator and motivator.

Do not underestimate what we have with Hardwick.

He will hopefully have a Craig Bellamy style career with us.

I’m not unhappy with Dimma , however we have now been an ordinary to fair side for around 2 and a half seasons , some Sought of freshning up is needed and something needs to happen about the close losses , with so many Dimma is very responsible.

From kick ins to our basic style of footy we are so predictable, when we scored that “Richmond goal” against the Cats we were also pumped because it’s what won us flags , however that’s about the only one this year.

Scott flogged Dimma last night , definitely need to look at our style differently now , also let’s ad players with footy smarts and skills

I don’t agree it's the price of a dynasty. At the end of the day no one is bigger then the club fullstop premiership players or not hard calls have to happen or else your going to be left behind simple as that and over the the last 3 seasons we haven't.He keeps talking about a Richmond game that's over needs to involve and stop being stuck in the past. He hasn't coached well this season the signs we're there preseason our skills and kicking looked thrash. Ryan was thriving in the number one ruck role with Miller backup and what he do he abandons it to fit Nank in puzzling decisions like that.

Look at our fitness and medical department it's a mess and the quality of assistant coaches left haven't been replaced.

Hardwick is a manager, not a coach. And I’ve said for many years he’s a shocking game day coach.

He’s been very fortunate in his career to have had some excellent coaches at the coal face working with the players and getting the most out of the group.

I believe that Richmond needs some new coaches in the off season and if the season continues along these lines, a new head coach.

I still can’t get over Hardwick pissing off to the States for weeks, after the miserable ‘22 season he led, when the whole team needed a much more disciplined and structured pre-season.

And whatever Hardwick brought back from the States to improve the side in ‘23 it ain’t working!!!!??

Big IF. Is getting outcoached regularly. Pepper Scott owns him.

The win against Geelong last week was an aberration. We are a hard team to watch; just butt ugly footy most weeks. Our record since 2020 GF is poor. Our ongoing inability to close out games (0-3-9) in last 12 games decided by a goal or less) has got to be down to coaching; the inability to instill the message of what needs to be done in those situations. Many of these losses are to inferior teams; can't wait to play North again this year...................

He's done. No shame in it; nothing lasts forever. Time to move on at the end of this season.
