Damien Hardwick

I don’t understand the itchy trigger finger on Dimma

I see old AngryAnt is on the warpath along with others. Lunacy.

The man delivered us the third flag of his tenure less than two years ago.

Endeavour is still there in this playing group.

I’ve covered the personnel issues that have hamstrung Dimma but it isn’t as sexy as saying he is a pot-smoking madman spraying champagne on hookers in Las Vegas now mrs Hardwick is out of the picture

Our pressure rating as mentioned by Dimma post game was absolutely non existant in the first half.
With finals on the line that was an extremely worrying sign for mine.
Our team plays it's best footy when it's a unified group & that means working hard defensively.
That Dimma can't get the team playing 'Richmond Footy' as he so often likes to reference is pretty damning.
To his credit he took responsibility for that but I still want to know why we were pancake flat.
What is going on? is it a case of young players meets old players or has he lost the players?

I agree, but three weeks ago we played the most electrifying footy of any club this year in the come back against Geelong. We have become a flakey side again that is unable to bring consistent effort within single games or week-in week-out. I hate it and find it too stressful as a supporter.

Here we go again, after a loss to Nth & GC
The media in particular Karen Cornes '13 yrs is enough'
He dosent mention Hinkley at Port tottaly useless, the rabbit at Geelong 1 flag off someone else's back and the dud at Sydney.
But says a 3 time premiership coach his time might be up. This is the same pricks that went after Clarkson.
This is what happened last year but with Cotchin and we know the result now.
Gale needs to come and say Hardwick will leave the club when he wants to the leave the club. 'We are not going to sack a 3 time premiership coach, if you think 13 yrs is enough there others clubs in the comp in the same scenario, go and speak to them"

Cornes might be OTT in his usual way but no coach or player gets to rest on their laurels.
Footy keeps moving forward pretty fast & it's a results based industry.
If we miss the finals again this year then the questions will inevitably come not just for many snr players but our coach too.

If I could ask our coach one question this week it would be with so much on the line, why was the team so flat from the start of the game?
We barely got out of first gear & the pressure rating rin the 1st half reflected that.
It's highly likely that loss has cost us a finals berth.
I can accept a team losing when they have bad luck. i can't accept a Richmond team that doesn't try.

Agree. We will also be looking down the barrel of a rebuild of sorts. Is he committed to that?

I had to wait until the dust settled after the debacle against the Roo’s, to write this post. I do so now, knowing I’ll cop some flak but that’s okay. We’re all here to express an opinion.

The Tigers now, under Hardwick and his assistants which also includes the MC is a spent force. Change is inevitable; but change caused by an aging list (with record numbers of injuries to the cream of that list), and the departure of some top-flight assistants, together with some very ordinary player selections and the continual hammering Richmond receives from the AFL controlled football press has not been handled well at all by the club, the players and the senior coach.

Change invites change and the club needs to be open to that invitation and requirement to change and to re-group and move forward successfully. It’s not doing that and my fear is it will settle for the easy option and tinker around the edges, with a steady but continual erosion of mind-set and performances on the field.

On Hardwick; I have always felt he has got the most out of his limited skill-set; with the incredible support and patience of the club who surrounded him with first rate assistants after 2016 because he needs that sort of help. An improving playing list with a sprinkling of bonafide champions was maturing and hungry and the rest they say is history. Well, it is history; a glorious 3-time premiership history but that was then.

Hardwick is not a great coach. He’s a bonder, a face for the media (which has become predictable and sadly repetitive), and perhaps the worst game day coach that I can remember. Enough has been written about his failure to respond to a game unravelling before his eyes. Selections have been self-defeating and repeating those mistakes again and again is not a good look for him (great coaches don’t repeat such glaring mistakes) and it must be demoralizing for those busting their guts out on the field.

Like a Shane Edwards, I believe Hardwick’s time at Richmond has come the full circle, and in a perfect world he would say thank you to a lot of people that supported him and worked with him and resign at the end of the season with his reputation intact and with the gratitude of Tiger supporters. There is such an obvious disconnect between what he says at his pressers, what is not happening at training and what all of us can see during a game. He started at the Tigers in 2010. Twelve years is a long time in the AFL to be coaching the same side.

I like Leppa as a replacement by the way.
Change is inevitable. It’s happening at the RFC and culminating at the end of the 2022 season by our very successful and astute president stepping down.

Change has also been forced upon the RFC by an incompetent and manipulative AFL administration and the white-anting of the AFL controlled football media that has been to Richmond’s detriment.

The cracks are there for all to see. This year has not been a good year for the MC and for the senior coach and his assistants, coming after a disappointing 2021 season, if you take the emotion out of the discussions and look at the results.

I have to believe that behind the scenes there are serious discussions taking place about who stays, who goes and who has resigned and their replacements. The RFC is a juggernaut that has been steered incredibly well by our pragmatic CEO and a stable board. I’m hoping and want to believe they are capable of making the right decisions, despite all the external noise, that will move the club forward with continued success.

If that means looking at replacements for Hardwick and some of the current coaching group, so be it.

I'm convinced we had heavy legs due to increased training loads. Pickett sluggish and fumbly, Shai and Danny invisible for a half, etc.

Dimma's not in it to make the 8. It's a flag or bust. Get everyone right and we can win it from 8th. But we need to be fit. He took the risk that we would still be too good for Norf. He lost.

Interesting notion, and would not be surprised

Unlike that tosser down at Geelong, no need to spill this info out in a presser either.

Nuh..doesn't this show in the game after the bye when there's 7 or 8 games left? There's only 5 left and last 2 were winnable but we lost just like previous games this season.

It looked obvious to me, TF. As Carts says, you won't hear boo from the club about it so we can only surmise.

Hope you're right spook. Let's see against Freo at the Dump again this week.

I'd advise Dimma to coach from the boundary. Better to get into the players' faces.

The reality is that there has been an excessive amount of top quality football department departures from RFC. The rate of departure has ramped up in recent years. Why? Is it soft cap, offers too good to refuse, realisation of a declining club future or their input, advice is not being valued or listened to? We have a stubborn coach who values past endeavour (older players) over potential. This has worked in the past but is it right for today's list, can the coach change can he listen to a strategic change? History has shown he has trouble with strong contrary opinions or perceived competitors (Andy Collins, Choko, Leppa, Flea, Truck etc). If he stays he needs support that will challenge him.

If Hardwick really did have those sort of issues then we wouldn’t have won 3 flags and he wouldn’t still be at the club.
