It's worth noting that the Australian cricketer with the most sense of perspective on this is Shane Warne.
I remember reading a piece by Gideon Haigh in which Haigh asked Warne what he missed most while banned for his drug indiscretion. Haigh was pleasantly surprised that Warne didn't "resort to the stupefying cult of the baggy green". Instead Warne said something like he simply missed playing, be it a club game or a Test match, because he enjoyed the game so much and you never knew what would happen in a day's play.
