Cricket

Sorry to be a bit pedantic but the wicket refers to the 3 stumps at either end of the Pitch. The pitch is "the flat rectangular central area of a cricket field that lies between the 2 wickets.
The pitch is also referred to as the wicket by all and sundry (eh! cricket word!) but I am with you, I would prefer it wasn't.

Also as they are named due to them being parallel to the middle of the pitch (afaik) should we rename the fielding positions mid-wicket, short mid-wicket & deep mid-wicket "mid pitch", "short mid pitch" & 'deep mid-pitch"? (wicket keeper of course is named so in relation to the actual wicket/stumps)

Yeah but "sticky pitch" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
Very true.

I think we can safely say that mid-wicket etc. refer to the mid-point between the two wickets.

The game was invented by the Poms, so inevitably there's an amazing amount of foibles associated with it.
Just like the English language. :))

I’ve never seen Bancroft look comfortable at the crease. Always getting squared up, always prodding and pushing.

Bancroft was caught off a no-ball then was eventually out for 16. Just a very ordinary bat.

Harris too did nothing to enhance his cause to partner Khawaja in the 1st test. Same with Konstas.

Who’s left?

McSweeney. He'd have to open in the second 'Test' if they're thinking of him.

Yeah, it’s looking that way. He hasn’t been outstanding in this A game but he’s really gritted it out in both innings.

So the Kiwis have just whitewashed India in India 3-0, without their best player. First time ever India have been whitewashed at home in a series of three or more Tests. In a historical cricketing context, this is a monumental occurrence. Pressure will be on Australia to do no less - at home.

Yep absolutely monumental.

Will go down as one of the greatest test series wins by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Folklore.

Incredible win although one thing India has shown is resilience. After we bowled them out for 36 they came back and won the next test. So I expect they will be fuming after this series loss and keen to make amends here. Should be a great series.

India's batting is a real worry. Kohli looks in terminal decline and has been for a few years. Rohit is 37 and has a highest score of 52 in his last 10 Test innings. He averages 33 against Australia and 31 in Australia. Sarfaraz is all duck or no dinner, and his preference to score between third man and backward point is questionable in Australia against our pace attack. Jadeja is almost 36 and has passed 50 once in his last 11 Test innings. He's a bowling all-rounder but they rely on his runs too.

Jaiswal, Gill and Pant are clearly their best batsmen now. They are all very good and should be coming into their primes. But that's a lot on their shoulders.

Without Shami and with Siraj out of form, their bowling is also questionable.

Yeh, the Indians have 4 players to worry about, those 3 batsman and Bumrah.

Bumrah/Pant are outstanding, genuine match winners. But they will need to play out of their skins for India to be competitive.

I missed the last day as was working - could not believe it when I read the Kiwis had won the 3rd test!!

Watching the highlights of the last day now.

Sharma - shocking dismissal, pre mediated hoick, pulled a ball that wasn't short enough
Gil - left a ball he should have played
Kohli - got a good one
Jaiswal - missed a straight one, young player feeling pressure?
Safaraz - awful dismissal, hit rank full toss down deep square leg throat
Jadeja - out to decent ball
Pant - rode his luck, batted like he had to in the circumstances. Got it down to 40 to win with 4 wickets in hand. And was out after a review. Looked like a definite edge, I am sure the Indians will say he hit his pad. But a definite clear deflection off the bat on the replay.
Washington - out trying to slog to the win
Ashwin - reverse sweep, a bit stiff to get caught behind off the glove
Deep - bowled by a very good ball to a No. 10
Siraj - NO

Pakistan 6/117 in the opening ODI @ the G. Again, strange scheduling from CA. Feels like these Odis are buried on a school/work day Monday rather than on a weekend, almost no promotion of it, very small crowd too. What’s the purpose of these ODIs when they’re treated with what appears such disdain.

I heard sunny Gavaskar talking about it.

The Indian selectors wanted the players to play domestic cricket after the IPL and they refused evidently saying they were tired and lacked motivation to play. This is a big issue for test cricket in India, the players hardly play long form cricket and there is little motivation for them to do it.

I can’t remember the exact detail but evidently Kohli hasn’t played a domestic game for 8-9 years.

Aussie players don’t play a lot of shield cricket I know but the pitches are not all that different between white ball and red ball cricket here.

I watched a bit of it. Pant maybe should have been given the benefit of the doubt, not sure he hit it, but he was out LBW when he was about 30 and the kiwis decided not to review! Ball tracking showed it would have hit middle stump.

Already? I didn't even know and thought they were still in Pakistan playing. That was a quick trip back home. Looks like a good crowd at the G for the fading ODI games.
