Blewett, Tate, Fergusson, Lehmann, May, Wayne Phillips., Manou, Hilditch,, Hookes, the Chapell's, Mallet, Bradman etc. are a few that immediately come to mind, but they haven't been as prominent.

Dizzy was a great, and Boof should've played more. Blewett like Elliot was unlucky to be behind Hayden, Langer, Martyn, Ponting, and the Waugh's.
Geez...forgot about Timmy May. Hilditch was a vague memory in the 80s but just average?

Victorias Matt Short continuing his excellent 2023 by making a ton v SA today. His scores this calendar year have been:
119, 70, 108*, 27, 58 for Victoria and :
0, 0, 40, 39, 20, 38, 100*, 38 for the Strikers in the BBL. He’s made a first class ton, a domestic one day ton and a T20 ton this year.
Another good score to Matt Short today, 81* v NSW

You forgot Les Favell and Victor Richardson !!
Terry Jenner as well

Noticed that the left arm quick Spencer Johnson who was so impressive in the BBL took 7-47 for SA against Queensland in their 1st innings.
His 2nd shield game
From memory he was a very promising young quick and has spent the last 6-7 years fighting injury

He has qualifed for Italy, and is hoping to play for them in 2024 world T20 qualifiers.

Blewett played 46 Tests. He wasn't unlucky. Averaged 34. Made tons in each of his first two Tests then two more in his next 44. I'd say he was lucky.

Don't be surprised if India rolls out a road in the last Test.

He was on the stars roster for awhile and didn't play a game (I think). He was great in the BB so good to see him doing well at shield level.

No no no.

He has failed on advantageous tracks numerous times. In Aust and out of Aust. He's had the advantage of bowled in tandem with some elite fast bowlers. Not many other of his contempories have enjoyed such luck. And I'm not comparing him to those 2 alone.

He's a good bowler with seredipitous timing. Admire his longevity.

Compare his 4th innings work to other offies from all countries. And not just in india on goat tracks (I don't recall Inidan pitches being prepared as poorly as the ones in this series especially). Almost all have a significantly better 4th innnings averages. Lyon's is barely better than his overall average.

Trying to find current players that have played at least 30 odd tests.

Jack Leach averages under 22 in 4th innings compared to 34 overall
Ish Sodhi averages 34.87 in 4th innings compared to 43 overall
Maharaj averages 18 in 4th innings compared to 32 overall

They aint bowling in India every week.

Maybe Lyon has time left to improve those numbers.
So does that mean these three are barely competent until the pitch is old n worn, whereas the goat just goes about his business of being seriously good in ALL conditions regardless?

Mixed bag? He's taken near 50% of our wickets.

And not sure how you say didn't stand up in the first innings of this Test 3-35 (Pujara, Jadeja, Bharat).

This aint a mixed bag of lollies.
In the first innings he took 3, including 1 from a half tracker sloppy shot. And it all started after Kuhnemann started the rumble and shook India down.
I'd say he was a good support act in the 1st.

But he's the most capped of the spinners. He's got the wickets, the wins, the validation.
Compared to how many tests/ first class matches for Murphy and Kuhnemann?

I'd want him leading the way, like Starc did and setting the pressure and momentum right on the oppo.
I thought that was Kuhnemann bowling as the main man.

Mixed bag in that he's had some poor innings, good supportive innings and tremendous domineering innings.

SMILING*** GLAD we got the win though!

if i recall with Blewett it was also the continuity (lack of) with his test career. Aussie selectors do like a yo-yo

Be good if the next pitch is a road. It would break up on the 4th and 5th days.
And it would mean the curators change plans only a week out. They'd need to dump water on it, probably causing more troubles !!

Blewett barely missed a Test from debut until he was dropped. 46 Tests in five years.

If reading this right, he's copping it here for not leading us in the first innings (But won us the match with an 8 for in the 2nd)

But then copping it from @MD Jazz for his overall 2nd (4th) innings efforts.

He can't dominate every innings lads. Not even SK Warne could.

fair enough, was relying on my memory.
4 100s in 46 tests at 34. pretty average.

He did effect the longest throw for a run out I have ever seen.

Picked it up just inside the boundary and heaved it to the bowler, who left it and it bounced in to the stumps, running the batsman out.

Was in Australia but I can't remember where.

I have never thought Lyon was a great bowler. He doesn’t have enough tricks , has always needed a doosra and doesn’t have enough variation.

I reckon a lot of people feel that way about him.

The problem is that the stats say we are all wrong !!
