Cricket

I thought it was Mark who was nicknamed Afghanistan during the period where Steve was playing for Australia (1985 onwards) when Mark didn’t make his debut til 1988 in the one day team and 1991 in the test team.

No one knew about Dean who was just a grade cricketer. He was the unknown Waugh not the forgotten Waugh.

Yes, I'm certain that Mark was the one who was called Afghanistan.

Just watching the first day of the 2nd SA vs WI test match here . The West Indies looking average again ,South Africa 1/177 . However there looks like there are only about 50 ppl there at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg .. Which is sad as they got good crowds in SA for the recent SA vs Eng ODI series .

Guess mark South Africa as another country with supporters not interested in test cricket anymore sadly . And the West Indian Team not interested or maybe not good enough for Test cricket .

Expecting good crowds for the upcoming ODI and 20/20 series and the West Indies to be more competitive . I guess they just specialise in the short form of the game these days .

That's depressing, test cricket has always been my favourite and I fondly remember a day at Wanderers during a test, it was the day Waugh and Blewett batted all day and a good crowd.

Something needs to be done to get people back to test cricket.

I think the horse has bolted. At its heart there wasn’t much to chose from entertainment wise 30 years ago vs now.

You had (mens) cricket season and footy season.

Basketball made a bit of a surge in the 80s on the back of Jordan’s worldwide superstardom.

Now you have gaming, streaming, access to any global sport you want via pay tv, mobile phones, PRE and cricket has fragmented into three forms. It’s going to be a rare kid that is going to watch 5 (3) days of a test match on tv let alone sit at a ground where to be honest you mainly have to watch the scoreboard to really see what’s happening.

Used to be a main thing for me - now I might watch some highlights and occasionally have it on in the background. It definitely can build drama and suspense but it’s a super slow burn.

Unless these games with low crowds have big tv numbers and can compete with ODI and T20 - the lack of revenue will kill it. Not enough people (outside India aus and england) care.

Reckon you will see what sort of interest there is in India today, despite the patchy crowds.

Heading to my old stomping ground of Ahmeddabad where the new stadium holds 130,000! Word is they have opened up tickets to locals to get a good crowd in for the PMs visit so it should be spectacular.

While there's a billion plus fanatics in India it will be fine.

New Zealand funded it's entire international cricket operations for a decade just through selling the TV rights to it's home series to India.

I read the suggestion there will lots- 70k or so, there to see Albo, but most will leave pretty quickly after. It would make a pretty hollow record crowd, of only 20k are there for the cricket.

I hope I don't mozz him, but Khawaja looks to be setting himself for a big one.

Straya 2/74, India really tightening things up. Commentators asking whether it’s a 400 run pitch? Doubt it.

How are the propaganda posters at the cricket? Subtle it ain't. And people say politics and sport don't mix.
