Cricket

If reading this right, he's copping it here for not leading us in the first innings (But won us the match with an 8 for in the 2nd)

But then copping it from @MD Jazz for his overall 2nd (4th) innings efforts.

He can't dominate every innings lads. Not even SK Warne could.

He averages over 31. That's a decent average. Lyon's a bloody good bowler.

But he has often bottled in when everything is in his favour. Most spinners have much better averages when pitch conditions favour them.

He's not copping it, to me it's more his supporters and their inane goat commentary for me.

Just a little foot note for those that don't rate the Gary. Today's Hun mentions that a couple of dud spinners in Warnie and Muralyduraly both averaged over 40 per wicket in India. Goes alright for a nervous stress head spinner with not enough variation, tricks or control does the Gary.

Lyon's back half of his career has been very good, is averaging 28 since 2017.

He did effect the longest throw for a run out I have ever seen.

Picked it up just inside the boundary and heaved it to the bowler, who left it and it bounced in to the stumps, running the batsman out.

Was in Australia but I can't remember where.
Blewett was a damn good cricketer. Fantastic fielder, handy medium-pacer and possessed brilliant cover drive and pull shots, which if you're only going to have two shots, are the two to have. Good player of pace, just had the fatal flaw of a gate you could drive a wide load through, got bowled through it more than a top batsman should. I only say he was lucky because he was preferred for years to superior players like Elliott, Martyn and Langer. But then he could bowl and was flexible enough to open, bat 3 or 6 (his best spot, deadly against the second new ball).

I have never thought Lyon was a great bowler. He doesn’t have enough tricks , has always needed a doosra and doesn’t have enough variation.

I reckon a lot of people feel that way about him.

The problem is that the stats say we are all wrong !!
Hard to have a doorsa if you don't chuck it.

For a conventional off-spinner (they can't bowl, ask Mark Waugh) he is most definitely great.

Lyon’s biggest problem is that he isn’t Shane Warne.

Mitch Perry from Victoria looks to have to potential to be a handy allrounder, he got 4 wickets in the first innings, and came in last night as night watchman and is currently 42 not out, he scored 75 a few weeks ago against QLD.
Perry has 3 of the 5 wickets to fall in the 2nd innings.

I reckon his biggest problem is his terrible nickname.
Which one, Gary or Goat??? Perhaps both? At least there was a bit more thought n effort went into it than Warnie, someone musta had a serious brain fart to come up with that one.

Reckon Warnie must have come from his footy days, cricket tends to do much better nicknames.

Couple that always tickled me were Andrew Hilditch who is known as 'soda' because he is a great mixer, and Peter Taylor who was called boat, after the PT torpedo boats.

Ian Healy used to be 'Sav' because Savlon heals, which then morphed into Battered Sav, which isn't as clever but very accurate.

Another one I always liked was Audi for Mark Waugh. Four ducks in a row against the Lankans.

Queensland have snuck into second spot on the Sheffield shield ladder, we need Tassie to finally lift and beat them in the final round of shield games.40C2D628-07CA-4992-864E-D9A94983C7EA.jpeg

Who don't rate him as what? A great? Sign me up to that club.

Warne didn't play on the rubbish pitches they've prepared in recent series and Indian tracks with the variable bounce and spin are much better suited to off-spin. Only played 9 tests there. A couple of roads amongst that didn't help his numbers. And not sure Warnie had mastered the flipper in his first series and perhaps firsat 2 series there. He would have got a stack of LBW's with it on those current tracks.

Agree with this, he is a better bowler now. A bit like Jimmy Anderson, who is such an improved bowler from 10 years ago. Almost got better every year. He was purely a pitch-up swing bowler in his early days that didn't have much else if the ball wasn't swinging. He's a great bowler now.

Perhaps Lyon will continue to improve.
