Jack Leach picked for his batting?

Clearly not picked for his bowling!!

Can anyone tell me the purpose of playing Leach if they don't attack with a spinner? It if its just to run through a few overs then let Malan or Root bowl those overs and pick either another quick or another batsman. If they want to attack with a bowler, pick one that moves the ball better in Dom Bess.

He's bowling very negatively. Around the wicket to 2 lefties, and aiming at leg stump. Won't go for a lot of runs, but will need a mistake to get a wicket, and of course, won't get a stumping while Buttler is keeping.

Gilchrist has just said that Leach averages 25 bowling to right handers and 65 bowling to lefties, which makes it even more astounding that he was bowling to 2 lefties straight after lunch. If you really wanted to bowl spin, then you'd bowl Root to the lefties.

Problem with England using an average spinner for me is that Root then won't bowl himself. I reckon he's a much better bowler than he gives himself credit for.

Agree. He's under-rated. Pretty honest; gets some wickets and seldom does any batsman ever really take to him.

Are we tanking?
No just throwing away the opportunity to go 3 zip. Really hate it when the bowlers put in the grunt effort (especially a great one like Cummins) to knock a batting side over cheaply, and then have to come out and make the crucial runs too.

Not really convinced that there is a truly great batsman in either side and supposedly about top 3 in the world currently. All 3 VG but truly great?

Root correct technique, good shots but cannot take it through to a century here. Lambuschagne seems to have gone so defensive; just leaves so many balls now where he refuses to employ his bat. Become boring. Figures flattered by lots of missed chances - more lives than a cat.

Smith an eccentric individual and same batting technique. Has made that walking across his off-stumps style work for a lot of runs but is he losing the great eye and reflexes needed for this to maintain success? Bowlers have worked him out a little more and piercing his defence?

Overall, no batsman has really got fully in control to dominate the bowling in this test. Pitch may not be easy but it's no minefield either if you really watch the ball from the bowler's hand and can select which balls to go hard at.

Cricket, like most other aspects of life, love a trend but the trend of the openers (both bat and bowlers) running off the ground at the end of the innings is unnecessary. It started as a show of eagerness ie “I’m so eager to get back out here and bowl/bat at you” but now everyone does it the signalling is moot IMO.

Best MCG pitch since when? Ever?

This is what test cricket needs to move towards. Wickets like this need to be the norm not the off one here or there. The bowlers need to be given some power back in this game, its not all about quick runs, thats what T20 is for.

For me, the best thing for test cricket, is to find a way to move to 4 days, but potentially extend the game. Cricket needs to come into the 21st century and its pretty clear that people are at least a little bit losing interest in test cricket. Lets reignite it by bringing bowlers more into the game (as this test has) and make it a real contest between bat and ball. These tests where both teams score 450+ in the 1st innings need to be seen for what they are, boring snorefests.

Whilst they are at it, lets move all balls to the pink ball, remove penalties for slow over rates but change the rules, so there is no standard time finish, you finish when you bowl all the overs. If you need to turn the lights on, do it (hence the move to the pink ball).

Pretty much ever
And how much better is the cricket for it.

The opening batsmen get 10 minutes to get ready. I think it's fair they try to maximise it.

Most Tests will be day/night within five years, and so they should be.

That's two chances in two Tests Carey has not dived for. That should have been a regulation catch.

They used to be able to get ready in 10 Without sprinting off.
