Re: Cricket

Bevan was a very good 1 day player but particularly late in his 1 day career he was selfish & batted for himself.I certainly wouldn't have him in the best 1 day side.

I despise Bevan as much as most through his selfish batting antics and attitude even to the point of going to Tassie to try and gain a World Cup spot for this year.

But to not have him in year best ever one day team is ludicrous (and I expect better from you knighter!). His woeful Test performances are not relevant.

His test batting didnt come into my thoughts otherwise would not consider him. IMO its a toss up between him Jones/Border and S.Waugh and Bevan for middle order spots and all would hold their own. My bias is probably coming through as a fan of Border and Waugh (though never liked Jones), I just think they also offered more with their fielding and in cases of Waugh and Border their bowling.

ToO mate its just an opinion or a thought no right or wrong answer and I maybe bias but I acknowledge Bevo was a good batsman just prefered others. My best 3 one day cricketers would be
1 Gilly 2 M.Waugh 3 Ponting

Will agree he did time some of his innings well to be in match winning positions like the WI last ball, NZL match and match v England in World Cup and batted well with the tail. I just think others have been better one day cricketers.

No worries Knighter, I'm not on here harping about him being the greatest ever, I just think he was a tremendous OD player and unfortunately an unfulfilled talent at Test level given the reasons outlined.
Another theory I have re his lack of success at Test level is that Bevan's generation of cricketers had an abundance of middle order talent. It's not just him who missed out on plenty of test matches. Law, Lehmann, Martyn, Blewett, Love, Siddons, Maher etc.. were all starved of opportunities on the big stage by playing second fiddle to stalwarts Border, the Waughs & Boon. Most of those players aforementioned would have been huge successes for any other test playing nations.
Opportunities at that time for a baggy green were as rare as hen's teeth and many players have been on the record as saying they felt extreme pressure to succeed when they were given the rare opportunity to cement their place.. Ricky Ponting(early) amoung them. Unfortunately for him I think Bevan felt some of this pressure more than most.
I also think the 10 wickets he took in a test match against the Windies clouded some opnion that he was a potential all rounder. Michael always saw his spin bowling as a hobby which he had some short success at, but never seriously thought it was better than his batting. It is little known he was the fastest bowler in Australia for his age at 16, before back injuries curtailed his bowling aspirations. He then focussed instead on his batting.

Graeme Hick declined the offer for safety concerns when he found out that bouncing the tennis balls at batsman off the sand was allowed.

Re: Cricket

Good win coming up for the Vic (hopefully).

Lewis didn't seem to bowl in the NSW's dig - anyone know why?

McGrath may be retiring but he's still far too good for that mob of pretenders. Pathetic.
If he wanted to, Mcgrath could easily go on for a couple more years.

Re: Cricket

Least we are getting in some practice for our first two matches in the World Cup

Scotland and Netherlands.

Re: Cricket

Just saw Cameron White's run out on the new - fantastic stuff. And I reckon Hodge's catches are almost as important as how many runs he makes. Great day so far for the Vics.

That's fortunate for him, 'cos he made exactly zero. :cutelaugh

Re: Cricket

Harwood impresses again with 9 wickets in the 4-Day game, also making 26 in the 2nd innings. Unlucky not to get MOM in my opinion.

Hmm, might have spoken to soon.

Good to see you are getting excited about this performance Ready. I guess narrow losses are as good as the Poms can do against the Aussies.
