Coronavirus

If they subsidise businesses to pay staff it should be easy to see if they are paying any staff who are PAYE taxpayers, they should be asked to provide the evidence via the tax system.

Certainly looks like the end for a while.

Halftime of the Hawks / Lions game suggests its a certainty.
If so, first he said if a player tests positive, but now he'd be riding on what ScoMo said.

If this is temporary, makes you wonder how the players are gonna cope. Maybe get the VFL going to keep them in rhythm.

No this is the full shutdown, which I support more than the half arsed efforts we have done so far. My concern though is for businesses that thousands and thousands, probably hundreds of thousands will lose their jobs. The shutdown is the right thing to do, the economic stimulus is not, should and could have been done in much better ways.

Why would people take it seriously when they see the AFL and NRL is still on? I love the footy as much as the next person but it needs to be cancelled.

Doubt it would be the whole season, but if so, they would need to create a state comp for the players. This is their job.

There's been talk that the dole should be increased since Adam was a boy, and I agree that it should.
I'm baffled as to why it has been doubled in the latest stimulus package though.
Give them an increase for sure, but double it.

Sh!t...no footy til May 31. That's 9 weeks of no footy. What do the players do?

Finals in November??

Its more evidence that the government can't see what the issue is. They should be looking to protect jobs, not increase the payments that people get when they lose them. Its a defeatist approach.

Yes, I just can't understand the logic of it.

They will have a lot of new customers not accustomed to living on the breadline.

They are still trying to stimulate the economy but then are shutting everything down. Where are these people supposed to spend their extra money to stimulate?

Its just dumb when this money could be being spent on trying to keep people in jobs.

Rent, mortgage, petrol, food, medicine, gas, water, electricity, school fees, insurances, clothes, the basics to be able to keep functioning.

That would explain it, people who lose their jobs would have higher financial commitments than those on welfare.
Mortgages car loans and personal loans etc should be waived though. Rents are major factor though.

There needs to be a freeze on essential cost like mortgages, rates, bills, fees etc to mitigate the impact of lost income and revenue until this blows over. circulation of money needs to be frozen so that wealth distribution can be maintained to an extent.

if they've been unemployed already its no different to normal then.

The priority for funding should have been on ensuring as many people stay in work rather than what would happen to them if they lost their jobs.

“There is no need for us to be moving towards not having mass gatherings of people. You can still go to the football, you can still go to the cricket … You can go off to the concert, and you can go out for a Chinese meal. You can do all of these things because Australia has acted quickly.”
