Coronavirus

How many fully vaccinated have flouted the lockdown and unknowingly transmitted the virus?

40% of hospitalised under 55 - that is an inordinate number indicative of a different dynamic.
I wonder if vaccinations are having an effect, stopping vaccinated older people from contracting the virus then saving the oldies who do get it from experiencing a more severe illness? That could make sense as a fair greater percentage of those over 50, or 60 are vaccinated than younger people.

That is the most logical assumption @Brodders17

Pfizer says fully vaccinated people need third Covid booster (paywalled)

Pfizer has announced it will seek regulatory authorisation for a third dose of its Covid vaccine to protect against “all currently known variants” of the virus, including the highly transmittable Delta variant.

The booster shot is currently undergoing trials and has shown “encouraging clinical trial data in a small number of participants in our study”, the company said.

It came after initial data from an ongoing trial showed a third shot pushed antibody levels five to 10 times higher against the original coronavirus strain and the Beta variant, first found in South Africa, compared to the first two doses alone.

“The companies expect to publish more definitive data soon as well as in a peer-reviewed journal and plan to submit the data to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), EMA (European Medicines Agency) and other regulatory authorities in the coming weeks,” the statement said.

In addition, the companies expect that a third dose will perform similarly well against the highly transmissible Delta strain, which is quickly becoming globally dominant.

Out of caution, the companies are also developing a Delta-specific vaccine, the first batch of which has been manufactured at BioNTech’s facility in Mainz, Germany.

The companies anticipate the clinical studies will begin in August, subject to regulatory approvals.

Based on drop-offs in efficacy seen in Israel after six months, the companies said they believe a third dose may be needed within six to 12 months after full vaccination “While protection against severe disease remained high across the full 6 months, a decline in efficacy against symptomatic disease over time and the continued emergence of variants are expected,” the statement said.

The FDA and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a joint statement late Thursday saying authorities were studying “whether or when a booster might be necessary.” “Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time,” the agencies said. “We are prepared for booster doses if and when the science demonstrates that they are needed.”

Yeh, failure of leadership of the feds in managing covid (despite the countries comparatively low numbers) in all facets is damning. As a generally centre-right leaning person its inarguable he's been a disaster. From quarantine to vaccine he's done nothing and deserves every bit of criticism. I can't believe there isn't talk about replacing him. He's the head coach but shown nothing. Worst ever. But look at the talent in that party?
One thing this pandemic has shown is we can't rely on people to do the right thing. Unfortunately we keep dumbing down society. Everyone needs to be told what to do in every situation, not many appear to want to accept responsibility for their own behaviour. It's not that hard is it?
The longer I have been involved in the public sector, which has included some limited access to politicians and staffers from time to time, the more I understand that in the end it’s not the smartest and best people who become politicians. Some are but most are just average plonkers who happen to have an interest in politics.
At the moment we seem to have more than our fair share of average plonkers right across the political spectrum, both state and federal

I'm assuming it's the Under 55 that are taking lockdown less seriously. 40% of those in hospital are under 55, but what is the total percentage of infected are under 55?

VIc needs to close to all of NSW asap.
Think they will.
Sydney siders arent listening.
Communties (a lot of multicultural) also ignorant to the fact unfortunately.

Is it they dont understand the langauge?

We need to help/educate them more.

My view of politicians, is most aren't lifelong pollies, some are, but many study other fields, seem to fail in them and then fall back into politics. So essentially we don't get the best of the best, its people that have already failed in their chosen field.

IMO a lot of this is due to pay levels, people get all annoyed with the pay of pollies, but if you compare their salaries to those in other careers (lawyers, accountants, financial managers, managing directors etc) their pay is on the lower end. There are $100m companies on the ASX who's MD's get paid more than the PM for example, let alone those that are involved with the biggest companies, so I guess my thinking is why would politics attract the best, they just can't with the salary levels that they have so we have people in charge that wouldn't get anywhere near a boardroom in the private sector.

And how many of the non-vaccinated have flouted the lockdown and have unknowingly transmitted the virus? Or had symptoms and transmitted the virus?

Mass vaccination only becomes truly effective when most people are vaccinated. So let's speed up vaccination yeah?

Yep everyone knows the score now. Don’t give us your *smile* excuses. Just get with the *smile* program and stop being selfish *smile* arseholes.

There is absolutely no excuse for people not following lockdown regulations.

I think stay the *smile* at home translates fairly well.

Don’t know, interesting question but not sure how we would get that answer

What we do know however is that not one hospitalised person in NSW has been fully vaccinated

I won't even go into the racism that is behind sending the cops into SW Sydney, while ppl in Bondi etc are packing in the parks, beach walks and cafes!
Surprised it took this long for the racism calls. How many people catch it at the beach? Is Bindi beach a known hotspot? Outdoor open space transmission common?
So the police do their job and idiots call racism. Moronic.

I am wondering whether I am just paranoid or do other Victorians feel like there seems to be more national coverage and sympathy from the media relating to the NSW lockdown than the Last Victorian one?
I may be imagining it but it feels that way to me.

Perhaps Sintiger. NSW are a precious bunch.

Re racism calls: Everyone does the wrong thing unfortunately, but the large multicultural gatherings/church gatherings do not help at all.

Happened in VIc too and was the cause of hundreds of cases. Most cited "no understand".

Surely they understand now.

It's simply because of the loud and vocal right wing media.
