Coronavirus

The lockdown was working before it even started.
Well said!

As soon as cases started coming up, I could see nunerous people wearing masks everywhere even before being mandatory with the lockdown. People getting tested and isolating (14K was reported) in their droves. People were taking noticable precaution already & conscious of it from what I had noticed.

you obviously missed the sarcasm in my last post.
if a person says they went to Epping Woolies, and a receipt says they went to Epping Woolies you think think the tracing team has stuffed up because they thought the person went to Epping Woolies?
This is what comes up when you google Eppings Woolworths. Pretty tough to realise there are 2.

Which is a great thing for the community. We'll know soon enough whether between people's own actions have stifled the spread of the virus. The official lockdown will just give everyone that's contracted it a chance to show the symptoms and get help.

Perhaps they don't use google?

right, and people who go to Epping North Woolies may not even know it's called Epping North. They just go to woolies, in Epping, of which there are two.

the outcome is a 7 day lockdown. Amazed how many think the contact testing team is killing it yet forgive this stuff up. At that stage they only had the one case. Merlino himself could have got on the phone.

the 7 day lockdown is because they cleaned the wrong supermarket?

is this true?

Perhaps its more because we don't have faith in our contact tracing ability and this stuff up an example of why we don't have faith?

Ultimately this appears to be leading to some accountability re vaccination some real discussion and hopefully action on national quarantine. The Vic's sacrifice for the betterment of the nation.

Is it right that the non-vaccinated elderly gentleman that met with the SA quarantine individual is now in intensive care ?

Need to be careful not to fall for Morrison and Murdochs ideological marketing trick,

of NOT blaming the Feds for dodging their constitutional responsibilities to quarintine and vaccinate

If there weren't so many exposure sites (currently 121), i would have been against the lockdown. I have been against most of the recent lockdowns (in WA, QLD and here in February), mainly because contact tracing is so brilliant and we need to have trust in it. But 121 is a very big number. I’m not really sure how anyone can be against this current lockdown.

right, and people who go to Epping North Woolies may not even know it's called Epping North. They just go to woolies, in Epping, of which there are two.
Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley tried to explain the mix up on ABC radio yesterday, saying that contact tracers had been given an electronic transaction receipt from a banking app, which indicated the at-risk individual shopped at the Epping Woolworths.
"Given that Epping Woolworths is right across the road from another established exposure site, the conclusion was drawn by the public health team that it was in fact Epping Woolworths.
On Friday officials revealed the supermarket visited by an infected man was actually the Woolworths in Epping North.
The latter supermarket is on Lyndarum Drive, three kilometres away.
Mr Foley said authorities believed COVID-19 detected in wastewater was viral shedding, and a low risk to the community.
"But out of an abundance of caution … we're asking the people of Wollert and Epping North to keep an eye on any COVID symptoms and get tested if they display any," he said.

Professor Sutton said he only had praise for the work of contact tracers.
“I don’t have any criticism for the contact tracers in relation to this case at all,” he said.
“Information on that banking app is what was used initially. We went back on the basis of the wastewater testing to re-examine that.
“We have always done that where new information comes out.
“Now that we understand that a banking app can provide the wrong information on a potential site we will use other mechanisms to absolutely lock in exposure sites.”

So they play down the risk of their oversight/error and blame a banking app? And they'll do better next time.

Did this lead to extra cases? It seems unlikely. But statements like “Now that we understand that a banking app can provide the wrong information on a potential site we will use other mechanisms to absolutely lock in exposure sites.” don't exactly fill one with confidence.

is this an example of luck at play again?

Good letter in The Age this morning:

In 2015 I worked as a nurse on Nauru. I witnessed first-hand the speedy and efficient building of 1000 comfortable demountables by a huge team of some 10,000 Australian and Papua New Guinea workers, in a week. Why hasn’t the same concentrated, vigilant focus and attention been given to building quarantine facilities in Victoria or anywhere else for that matter? Millions of dollars were found, and spent, on locking up asylum seekers, yet we cannot find the funds to quickly build safe quarantine facilities.

It all comes down to priorities.

Imagine if we were serious about building quarantine facilities, as serious as we are about locking up refugees.

Absolutely agree the Feds have botched it. Non-existent leadership. They should release the minutes of discussions from National cabinet meetings where the decision on quarantine was made. It is a federal responsibility and they should have shown leadership and vision and managed it. Scomo didn't want the responsibility.

The vaccination rollout has been poorly promoted & communicated. The feds let us down here also.

I think its a bit of both, definitely some bad luck but a mistake was clearly made. Its cold comfort to us in lockdown now, but i'm happy that they at least admit to their mistakes and commit to learning from them.

I watched Greg Hunt the other night wriggle and squirm his way out of answering questions with Leigh Sales on 7:30, basically just twisting numbers and words to avoid any accountability over the slow vaccine roll out. If he and his ilk would just admit mistakes have been made and they're doing everything we can to get it back on track, i doubt that there would be so much animosity towards them. I'd still be annoyed personally, but at least feel like they're being honest with us.

I think politicians rank at No.1 in the least trusted professions. Less trusted than advertising executives, bankers.......

Luck, and clearly mistakes were made. Don't see how anyone can deny that.

Anyway, until we get a majority of the population vaccinated outbreaks will occur and contact tracing errors will happen. Get vaccinated, and accelerate the vaccination program.

Four cases. Truly expected 15 at least.

But it feels like a lucky number, not a managed number.

This time feels a lot more menacing or is that just because of what we went through last year?
