Coronavirus

The reality of what happens when a health system is overwhelmed.

Full on hysterical internet freak out. Phhhhht.

yeah you wouldn't be happy if you're travelling to Italy in 19 weeks. hopefully it dies down by then. but i just read the fine print in my travel insurance and it doesn’t look like I am covered. I'll have to confirm that with them because i took out the insurance well before the outbreak.
Your insurance won't cover ya for the coroner virus. Pretty sure all the insurance companies pad their arses for this sort of stuff no matter how fancy the cover you take out.

There was a good article in yesterday's paper by the HS's health reporter, who specialises in policy. He clearly had the inside running and said the government is waiting for domestic transmissions to exceed cases flying in from overseas before hitting the button. The implication was that they need to allow people to get sick first because the public won't tolerate strict measures otherwise, and there'd be a risk of anarchy.

Basically, there won't be much happening in the way of government action until practically everyone understands this is serious sh!t.
Do we have enough Pine o Clean to disinfect the whole of Aust?

China 'concerned' about rising coronavirus cases in Australia
China is "concerned" about the rising number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Australia, but the country's consul general to NSW said Australia's travel ban on China was an overreaction and there were no plans to evacuate Chinese nationals if the virus intensifies here.

At a media briefing in Sydney on Wednesday, consul general H.E. Gu Xiaojie said the Chinese government had managed the coronavirus crisis well, buying the rest of the world time to prepare, and has been transparent with the spread of information.

He said Australia's travel ban on China is an overreaction that has hurt Chinese students studying here and "we regret that it will impact on the normal people-to-people exchange and the normal trade economic relations between the two countries".
How's the form on old mate? No shame.

Active cases & deaths outside China. The percentages aren't smooth because a) the time that countries report their figures has changed, with much of Europe now updating in the early hours, and b) the time I recorded the numbers varied by up to 2 hours each day.

It's very obvious where this is heading without many large countries locking down. What then? Businesses can't be expected to keep paying people with no money coming in.

Disappointing if true. Disinfecting public areas after hours isn't a strict measure anyway.

Interesting to compare Hungary's approach with ours. With 13 cases, they've

- declared a state of emergency
- cancelled outdoor events involving 500+ people
- cancelled indoor events involving 100+ people
- closed all universities
- increased border security

These numbers are keeping me awake at night. They are keeping most of us awake LTRTR.

Deaths are escalating in other countries. Would that be correct LTRTR.?
In the EU it appears to be the case.

In the coming days i want to see how our PM & the rest of the states respond.

Most concerning is how we as people will respond.

My family and my elderly mum are my concerns if people's reaction(as i expect will border on me, me, me) take over once they wake up to this news.

I'm not convince that a warmer type climate will disrupt this virus.

In our part of the world we will in the coming months enter winter which could , i say could, i hope not see cases in our part of the world see a huge jump in cases.

I decided to do some reading and see whether i am thinking that as this is new to us whether its affect could be at a larger scale and simply thinking its a "flu" , seasonal and the warmer climate might slow it down , i came across this article below.

Some points i've taken and put below.
If Anyone is interested you can read further.

Will warm weather stop the spread of coronavirus?

Dr. Gregory Gray, of Duke University's Global Health Institute Division of Infectious Diseases, tells CBS News that the summer months may lead to a small decrease in transmission, but likely won't stop the spread of coronavirus completely.

"It is hard to know," Dr. Gray said. "Routinely seen coronaviruses often wane during summer months as buildings have more air circulation, [people] tend to congregate less, and people are more exposed to UV light which can kill viruses."

However, he said this particular coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV2, "is pretty infectious — meaning it has a high basic reproduction number — and virtually 100% of people are susceptible. My hunch is we may see a 10% to 20% slowdown in transmission, but I doubt the virus will cease infecting people during summer months."

It is also important to remember that just because it starts getting warmer in the U.S. doesn't mean it's warm elsewhere.

"The virus will soon be very active in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, which have opposing summers and winters," Gray explains. "Hence, a summer slowdown in the Northern Hemisphere may be offset with a concomitant winter increase in the Southern Hemisphere."

Yes, if you consider the equator passes just above New Guinea, it's very much a northern hemisphere affliction at this stage.

Absolutely they are escalating. March 4 there were 232 deaths outside China, March 11 there were 1213. A lot of that is Italy, but it's simply a case of more infections = more deaths. As this thing overwhelms other countries, especially those with poorer health systems, people will die of other afflictions because there aren't enough resources to attend to them. This is already happening in Italy and these deaths won't be chalked up against CV.

More important than ever to take good care of yourself.
