Coronavirus

You're telling me that a P2 respirator mask, properly fitted and not contaminated with hands etc, isn't good for ~8 hours?

I bought mine from a hardware store nearly a month ago so I'm not depriving anyone in health care. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has any in stock to sell to the public now.

Your P2 mask might not be effective at all. Lowered risk doesn't mean none.

Yes perhaps for the 20 minutes the masks are designed to protect for. After that they become a platform that promotes virus orgies. Do you want that on your schnozz?

Just to clarify, viruses will not replicate on a mask, or any surface. Because they're viruses.

But yes, masks can be a source of contamination, after exposure.

@23.21.159 ...

You may have other things to worry about, but I noticed Denmark had a substantial jump of 66 new cases today, up to 156. Anything of interest you want to share?

Edit: 172 new cases, up to 262.
Yes. Huge jump and I had noticed it. Can't really add anything to those numbers. Perhaps we are at the "sweet spot" in terms of number of days since it first appeared here (about two weeks ago i think). No deaths here yet.

travel ban now announced on Italy.
About time!
Reality is this should have happened a week ago Scotty. Grand Prix money obviously dictated this delay.
USA next.

Interesting. Disposable gloves haven't been widely recommended, but I got some in case ATM's and petrol pumps became an issue. Everything else I've bought in preparation would've been used anyway if this thing had fizzled out.

I hate the doors at work - security doors where you need to push a button, then pull the door inwards to get out. The doors have quite a bit of resistance and require a firm grip, making the hip & shoulder method redundant. Hence I've been working from home.

yeah you wouldn't be happy if you're travelling to Italy in 19 weeks. hopefully it dies down by then. but i just read the fine print in my travel insurance and it doesn’t look like I am covered. I'll have to confirm that with them because i took out the insurance well before the outbreak.

Some people are clearly more concerned than others. It'll be cold comfort for the concerned if the outcome justifies them.

Are you worried about yourself or family members? Or disruption to life?

A bit like I don't worry about starving to death but millions die of from famine each year I'm not particularly concerned about the impacts of coronavirus on me or my family.

If we worried about everything that was wrong with the world we'd be dripfed Prozac. I prefer to concentrate on those things I can control and just be grateful I, like most Australians, won the "ovarian lottery".(as Buffet says)

Its funny, I get the sense those worried about Islam/muslims almost celebrate the latest terrorist incident and those worried about climate change celebrate another record setting year. It seems the urge to shout I told you so supercedes everything.

Ridiculous post.

So Italy is over reacting by locking up 60m people.

its hard to know how serious to take it all,

ive probably been a bit slack in that I havent given it as much thought as others up to this point , dont follow a lot of main stream media these days , so have missed a bit of everything that is going on , listened to sen today and they spoke about it so much ,

And in conversation with others out and about , im really starting to pick up up on the concern and fear , its quite alarming how much its consuming everyones thoughts

Worried for my mum mostly as she's in the highest risk category - worried that if she has health issues of any sort that she won't be able to get help. Then my (usually) smartest and most sensible sister who isn't listening and her family. Then my other two sisters and their families. Then me. Major disruption to our lives is a given IMO. For how long I have no idea.

Reckon it's potentially dangerous to wait for the government to do your thinking for you on this one. Nobody's alive who remembers 1918 to tell the tale. Not saying it'll be that bad... I just don't know.

Don't worry, I won't be claiming any bragging rights if the whole shithouse happens to go up in flames.

Taken me 2 weeks to find any hand sanitiser, walked into Bunnings to buy a light bulb, and they were just opening a box off 500ml bottles to put on display at front of house so grabbed a couple, (i thought it was christmas) , one woman was filling up a trolly and stuff everyone else

The reports on the ground from people in the middle of this aren't painting a very nice picture. I guess even if you're lucky enough to be in the category where you can catch it but show no signs, in that state you can still pass it onto others who might be in a higher risk category. That's the fear here.

You can always reuse the gloves as condoms

The advice is pretty clear that the only way we know of to stop the disease, without a vaccine being anywhere close, is separation. It's going to be a big problem for those who aren't able to work from home.

There's some evidence to say the virus doesn't do well in warmer weather, which would help us... for a while.
