Coronavirus

Particularly as they weren't open completely the whole way through. It's only since restrictions eased that most retailers have reopened.

Some restrictions were eased on May 27, but there wasn't a spike until after the protest. A deadly cocktail, perhaps?

Anyway I really don't enjoy this type of debate despite perhaps giving the opposite impression. Happy to drop it and deal with the current situation which affects all of us.

'The spike' is not a binary event that happened at a predictable point.

Leaving aside the 1 to 3 week incubation period, there will be a lot of silent, undetected transmission that happens before a spike is seen. If we're seeing a spike three weeks into June, it's not unreasonable to think that community transmission has been increasing since the end of May, to detectable levels over the last week.

I could rip this apart but like I said, keen to drop the blame game if you're happy to remove your foot from my throat. My point's well and truly made.

The reality, shown by any measure, is that the general relaxing of restrictions has caused the spike, not a one off event held outside with comparitively small numbers of people.

Just looked it up, and by the way, on an average day highpoint shopping centre has over 40,000 visitors. I've got friends who work there who say that this weekend was one of the busiest they've experienced.

And that's happened every day of every weekend since restrictions eased.

The issue here is that restrictions were eased too soon. If you want to have a go at someone, have a go at our federal and state leaders (the left and the right). Blaming the BLM is just stupid.

So why is it only VIC where this spike has happened? You have no evidence that spikes are caused fr4om eased restrictions yet you claim they are? Why is every other state not the same?

Oh, and crowds at shopping centres/bunnings etc have been large since restrictions first came in. They were large every weekend. Bunnings crowds are lower now than they were during restrictions.

You have no data to support your claims yet continue blaming restrictions easing for the spike. Why hasn't this happened in every state?

The protests clearly are not the source of the spike but neither can you blame the easing of restrictions, its disingenuous to go down that line.

The BLM protests were criticised for happening during a pandemic, not the right time.
The Indigenous rallies on Australia Day are criticised for happening on our national day - not the right day.
Climate change protests are criticised as school students shouldn't take time off school to protest against screwing up the planet - not the right time.

Let's face it, the right, along with the right wing cheer squad that is our media, just don't like civil society (ie: citizens) challenging their precious system designed to keep them rich and powerful at the expense of the rest of us.

DS

The difference is I think its only the real right-wingers that are upset by all 3.

Many more people than just right wingers are pissed off that BLM protests went ahead but respect the other 2 capaignns. Shouldn't lump them altogether.

Have other states had similar issues with people infected by quarantined travellers? VIC seem to luck out everywhere with corona.

Not aware of any MD.

Again overall numbers are pretty low,, so could just be bad luck... We need to get a hold of these hotspots in suburbia though.

Antivaxer & World No 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic has tested positive & a whole heap of the players he invited to an unsanctioned tennis exibition tournament that he arranged. Djokovic's pregnant wife is also infected.

CoVidiot.

What an absolute spud.

“I am extremely sorry for each individual case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone’s health situation and that everyone will be fine.”
Yeah , nah, they'll be fine. 'Tis but the flu. Won't be no complications. Get 'em some oils and erbs and a recipe from Chef Pete Evans magic machine.

The public sorry and hope are meaningless and hollow. A moron with money is a close second behind a moron with a gun.

I didn't realise Djoker was an antivaxer. What a *smile*. Won't be able to bring myself to ever want to see him win another match

Happy to drop a debate where everything you say is contradicted by the evidence.

Hardly surprising.

People do realise it was Morrison & the Federal Government who wanted Victoria to open up faster. State opposition wanted that too. Andrews was taking a very conservative approach because he was worried this would happen. Many seem to have conveniently forgotten that fact.

What's it with people waiting 4 hours to be tested only to be turned away and urged to shop around for tests  , get your act together Victoria.

You shouldn't get hung up on a word that doesn't apply to you. It was a generalised and light-hearted slap at Greens supporters.

You claimed everyone was wearing a mask, so I assumed this was based on first-hand experience. While this would no doubt have helped to limit transmission, it wouldn't have prevented it. Even if true.

You also claimed protesters observed social distancing. Now I haven't seen much of the footage or photos, but enough to say that is categorically false. I'm not going to label you a liar, just someone who is overly keen to deny any culpability on the part of the protesters, for whatever reason.
You shouldn't use a "generalised and light-hearted slap" that can be easily mistaken for one of your frequent nasty pejoratives directed at people you disagree with. Was "dirty, filthy lefties" a "generalised and light-hearted slap"? And again, I didn't get hung up on it. I just expressed my frustration that you continue to pepper your responses with such othering. But you do you, Boo.

I was told by people who were there that everyone was wearing a mask and social distancing. It is only anecdotal I suppose, but it beats your correlation. Free masks were given to anyone who needed one.

The timing was unfortunate and I didn't go because of covid concerns, but I can see why people felt the need to go. There is such a thing as momentum in the tide of public opinion, and no one can argue that the turnout didn't make a powerful statement.

Besides, if no cases get linked to the protests, maybe we can go to the footy.

Nah, that was pure vitriol.

I could shoot the rest down with a handful of photos, but don't want to discuss it.
