I don't claim to know much about Alistair Clarkson's coaching credentials, but I can't imagine it's filling the Hawk's faithfuls hearts with joy and hope. He's not going to do great things for their membership next year either. Glad we got Wallace. ;D

Ha ha ha this must go down as Gold Oldie.................Now you cant wait till he's gone....... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sums up 1995 and 2001 perfectly, as much as I love the win against the Bombers.
I dont disagree........ if the club goes for a quick fix and stuffs up. After 1995 we immediately lost Northey....... our best coach in the last 25 years. In 2001 we kidded ourselves we were close to a flag. Quick fixes rather than stability and sustained steady growth have been our constant downfall. Only now are we finally seeing financial and board stability, and decent investment in facilities and specialist support staff.

Hawthorn's story has been the same for the last 16 years. They did the same thing in 2001 as we did. At the start of 2004 Schwab declared them good things for the flag....... famous last words :-[

The way the Hawks played in the semi last year, having players with poor discipline under pressure, and the recruitment of Stuart Dew makes me question if anything has really changed.

I'd take those two seasons over last year's wooden spoon any day.  We had plenty of good wins...and a draw..and got to sing the song after the games more often than not.  We mightn't have gone on to a premiership but there's no guarantee we'll get one after  coming last either.

I don't agree with that one bit Hay. I'd take 6th over 9th or a wooden spoon every time. There's more to footy than premierships and the benefits of a winning culture and promise for the future are immeasurable as Vic clubs fight for memberships, sponsorships, advantageous draws and general support. The more $$$ a club can raise will give them more benefits for the future in being able to hold players, have decent coaching staff and conditions etc. Even if we never win a premiership I'd welcome finals appearances and think most here would too.

Everyone would (bar Daydreamer of course).

I think he just enjoys an argument that he can send round the mulberry bush.

Give me sixth over a wooden spoon any day of the week.

I don't accept 6th, 9th or a wooden spoon. If it keeps you guys happy and continues to give you something to whinge about every year then you are welcome to it. Apart from a few false dawns Richmond has been meandering along that path for the last 25 years and Hawthorn for the last 16.

You can go support Hawthorn if you wish.........I'll stick with Richmond thanks ;)

Hay does have one point, and that is until the Hawks actually get to the end of September, this list is just potential.

With their awesome list, we were all waiting for the inevitable Saints string of GF's not long ago, and guess what? They never came. Same with Freo, and now both sides are not far off their last roll of the dice before they need to look at a rebuild.

On the otherhand, the Swans continually get written off as too old and past it, but somehow manage to be at the pointy end in recent years. Similar with Adelaide, who were expected to fall apart with an aging list and an untried coach.

The point is, getting to GF's (and more to the point winning them) is not just about your list and how hot you look on paper and during the H&A. Some teams lack the "it" factor to pull it off in Sept, while others switch on in September and are at their scariest.

For the Hawks, the jury is still out as they are really untested as yet. They had one finals run last year, but its too early to call it an indication of things to come or a hic-cup on the road to success.

That's the same for every club in the league. We can judge on last season though and I'd prefer any finalists "potential" to our wooden spoon.

I actually disagree with this. Where is the potential for us and the Dees in 2008? Both sides lack the skills in their younger players or the experience in the older players to be even a remote chance of doing anything. For us its hope, not potential.

You then go to teams like the Dogs and Kangas. Sure they can win a flag on their day (like a Swans did), but no-one seriously has either of these two listed as a flag contender because they don't have the talent. If they get there, it will be a lot of grunt and a lot of luck. This is part of the reason people like these sides winning flags (when their's is out of the race), its the hard luck underdog story which always sells well.

The Hawks have the talent, so they will be much like the Saints now, with everyone watching them to see if they realize this potential.

Hope/potential is just personal perception/opinion. I hope our speculative kids reach their potential. I'd still rather play finals than get a wooden spoon too.

I agree with that sentiment, just think we will have to wait a while longer.

Is that mail or wishful thinking in your opinion Phanto? Clarkson - so he was the HFC no.1 choice all along! Man, how did we get stuck with Plough and let him get under our guard?!?! LMAO
Good question

Why can't people just count our own blessings without needing to put others down.
There's no guarantee that Terry will be more successful than Alastair and he comes with a fat 5 year contract into the bargain.
It will be interesting to compare the fortunes in 5 years time.
I hope we're the ones laughing and I'm glad of our situation but there are certainly no guarantees.
Go Terry...but good luck to Alastair.

What a good post to bump this thread with. Comments hanging it on North about their coaching decision reminded me of this thread. An interesting trip down memory lane.

Give us a break Rosy, we can't hang it on any other side about playing footy. The coach is all we got! :)

I'm sure they're happy with their premiership. ;D

Yes. At least we don't have to worry about a premiership hang over :(
