Changes v the Cats

Well we won’t win a shoot out as we struggle to kick a lot of goals - our efficiency inside 50 is still poor.

If we can get our defence to find it’s early season form and we win enough stoppages and clearances we may keep ourselves in the game but right now we have no answers to their 3 aces in Hawkins, Cameron and Stewart.

If we remain competitive and close-ish (say within 4 goals) it may mean we have actually turned the corner - I am not confident we will be able to do this though.
Hawkins, and in particular Cameron are pretty good players, but really if we think we are a good team, we have decent match ups for them both- Balta and Grimes and/or Broad.
Last year Hawkins had his only goalless game for the year, with Tarrant on him, while Cameron was dangerous.

Stewart's effectiveness is dictated a little by the oppositions forward delivery.

Fair point- maybe if fans around you are booing get them to stop if Stewart is racking up the ball!

And why only 1/4 time for the umps?
It’s all I’ve got in a raspy voice box. Even if I yell something just once or twice during a game, I’ve near lost my voice at the end of it. Sound like Tom Waits the next day. Same when I get colds and do a bit of coughing.

It didn't work in the game that he did knock out Prestia. We lost by a goal and Stewart was best on ground, taking a game saving mark with only minutes remaining, despite relentless booing by tigers fans. Reckon he would have reveled in it.

Hopefully we hurt him where it really counts - the scoreboard.

I won't bother booing, but would probably give a bronx cheer if I saw him hobbling off with a hamstring strain or some other relatively minor injury though.

So do we play Young

Balta , Grimes , Broad , Vlastuin

Hawkins - Balta
Cameron - Broad
Henry - Grimes
Simpson - Vlastuin

We are not going to defeat Geelong without a specific plan so how about some lateral thinking just for this match.
Short Grimes Young
Rioli Balta Vlas
Pickett Prestia McIntosh
Broad Bauer Baker
Martin Nyuon Bolton
Ryan Hopper Taranto
Int: Graham Miller Riewoldt Mansell/Clarke Cotchin
Soldo for Miller if available. Broad to negate Stewart/Tuohy
Good luck Grimes on Hawkins
Nyuon and Bauer add mobility, size and marking power which was lacking last week.
Love it fraser.
Waltzing out of fwd line a huge issue, biggie & bauer a well overdue addressing.
Depth of run.
Int.
Miller Mansell Dow (due) Cumbo (another chance in a running team)
Sub.
cotch/graham/jack (not more than one in same team) / hrs

match-ups on Dawkins and Jizza crucial ... Broad Balta Grimes Vlast will nullify the 2 towering tossers

niggle Stewart all day and get in his ear .. hope Dion tells him aggressively to GET LOST

Significant outs> Lynch, Nankervis, Tarrant, Gibcus, Rioli Jnr, and Soldo
Soldo and Young are a chance to play.
Cotchin is available.
Rioli may get up for Dreamtime at the G

Early prognosis

Gibcus is set to play minutes in the VFL this week, his first game for the year after hamstring surgery, while Soldo and Young need to get through training. Nankervis is closing in on a return, as is Rioli jnr. Lynch is out of his moonboot, but still "a while away", while Colina and Smith have both consulted external specialists. Brown is close to being ticked off for a return to play, and Campbell is "de-loading" to help build strength in his adductor. Trent Cotchin is also available after a week's rest. - Sarah Black

Highlighted players in their expected best 23. Only De Koning has a chance but wouldn't be at all surprised if he misses one more week.

Early prognosis

Geelong will be without skipper Dangerfield for the next few weeks after he suffered a hamstring strain against Adelaide. De Koning could be available after undergoing facial and nasal surgery last week, but will need to prove his fitness later in the week. Rohan and Bowes are still missing with the soft tissue injuries they suffered against Essendon in round seven. Josh Gabelich

Both have significant outs but Lynch is the big one here. Similar to cats if they had no J Cameron.

If we are able to score heavily as we did against the Eagles, i.e. finding ways to kick goals without Lynch then this will go a long way in winning the match.

We have our entire midfield so I would say we would win the midfield battle, just have to capitalise going inside 50

We just need everyone to mention to Stewart as they walk past "Guess what", when he says "what", they reply "Marlions gonna get ya". All variations of that. Doesn't need to get him per se, big hard hits but might be enough to have him hearing footsteps to rush his disposal and maybe drop a few marks. Get him way off his game.

It would concern me if I thought I was going to be crunched by Marlion at any second

Yep. I won't be wanting our players to go with the violent approach but I reserve the right to boo that prick relentlessly.

We should be lining Marlion up on him though. He doesn't have to do anything outside of the rules, but a few well timed hard tackles into the ground would be nice. Make him hear some Marlion footsteps would help with reducing their ability to intercept in their back half.
Aah so this is what is behind the Marlion forward move. 2 games to prep
