Changes v Hawks

How the *smile* doesn’t Burgoyne get suspended??
It was definitely two seperate actions but I’ve given up trying to make sense of the MRP.

Guaranteed somewhere along the season someone will do a very similar tackle but get suspended.

So we've played one game off a limited preparation against a premiership contender and drawn. And it was only 3/4 of a normal game.

I fail to see how you can make any sort of reasonable judgement on the performance of anyone in those circumstances.
Tend to agree with the exception of anyone who was poor and didn’t do their job.

When is Short going to come under any pressure? Seriously what besides a half decent kick does he bring to the side.

Yeah I can't believe the lack of calls to drop short. Dont hate the bloke, I just can never understand what he offers.
Drop short bring in Ross and shuffle possies to make it happen.

Reckon Graham is safe. Trying to get him to understand where to go to get some easier ball.

Missed tackles, thats what let him down Thursday. Graham critical to our pressure game at the contest. He stays.

Stack for Caddy. That’s it.
I have concerns with Graham’s shoulders. Hence the missed tackles. Pressure is his one wood. If he can’t tackle then he is up *smile* creek.

I'd go in unchanged, I think continuity is as important as anything at the moment.

Continuity is important, so is giving opportunities to up and coming players/fringe players and without the VFL match play is important. Form also matters, those out of form, do they deserve to keep their place when there are good players waiting for a chance?

This is not simple. Clearly last Thursday's game was weird and not too much should be taken from that game. But there are a few players who are a worry.

Stack looks under-done, does he need some time playing at a lower level if there are opportunities?
Graham looks a bit out of sorts and his shoulder is a worry, does he need more time to get over shoulder issues?

Caddy may be back.
Balta sounds like he could do with an opportunity.
I reckon we missed Nank.

Lot of things to weigh up and the absence of the VFL is a very significant loss.

I am happy for one or two changes to be made each game during the first half of the year - its in the run to the finals that we need a settled line up - love to have Balta to play and be the back up ruck defensive spot and also give Dow / Ross / RCD some more game time.

Even at the top of our game, we need to continue to invest in our future and those 4 lads are a key part of that - get some games into them in the early part of this weird season.

The way I see it is we went with that 22 as our best side (minus Caddy) so we probably need to trust them at least once more before we can make a call on them, especially after the disjointed preparation.

I'm sure we will make changes to the side for match-up and team balance reasons but I don't think we will be applying a blow torch to form just yet.

Yeah, continuity is good. Caddy a def if fit to come in. Still think Stack and Graham most at risk to go out.

I tend to agree with the strategy that one ruck is enough in the shortened form of the game so Soldo keeps his place.

I reckon the decision around Graham is more than just form, he didn't look right and that shoulder is a worry. Graham is young and he can be a good player for many years, we don't need to risk his shoulder now.

The main reason I am less than convinced with 1 ruck is that I think we are a little too short, an extra ruck can contest with tall players, it is a help.

Agree form from that game last Thursday is not likely to be much of an indication of anything on it's own. If combined with issues training it might add up to something, but you couldn't make decisions on just that game.

Hawks are very tall (probably too tall) so an interesting philosophical discussion at selection as to whether we try to match them or exploit them with smalls.

I'd have Graham out Nank or Balta in. Stacky to half back.

Broad Grimes Astbury
Stack Flossy Houli
Short Cotchin Baker
Rioli Castagna Shai
Dusty Jack Lynch

Soldo Lambert Prestia

Int: Shed Pickett Higgins Balta/Nank

Most of both sides small forward's struggled in that congested dewy mess. Elliot hardly touched it, De Goey got no real possessions in the 50. So I think we need to go easy on Rioli, Stack, Castagna, Bolton (Thought the last two were ok).
The question I have is do we need to make 2-3 changes each week to keep our extended playing list match fit?
Sure the reserves had a practice match but I am not sure these will always be viable. We have to guard against copping injuries later in the year and replacing those guys with players that haven't played in ages!
Suspect the conditions could be similar this week, although northerly winds usually bring less dew.
Perhaps Nank for Soldo (not on form), Caddy for Lynch (precautionary).

Interested in peoples thoughts on who the 6-8 players are that we need to keep match fit.
