Changes v Cats

Only watched half of the ressies game yesterday as it was a carbon copy of the seniors game to that point. Fridge Graham, Towner, Menardue n Naishy were playing reasonably well with little support. Eggsy could have been playing well but made a couple of stupid mistakes that cost goals.
Was bloody disappointed in the performance of two who should have been throwing everything at the game for the chance at senior selection Sausage n Cholly, both had zip influence, input or impact on the game to half time.
Doesn't leave the match committee with many options to consider in the lead up to the Cats game.

But given his age and how long he’s been in the system playing against men, versus Naish, wouldn’t you naturally expect that to be the case?
Yes! So?

Might be time to give Rioli a real break, not playing VFL, but going home for a week or two.

Would be great to have Lambert back, he is very valuable, hopefully he can recover by Friday.

Sounds like Naish is not ready, I can't see Menadue making it at AFL level, too many chances already.

Soldo has to stay in, CCJ is a great prospect but not ready yet and Chol looks like a good experiment which didn't work, that happens.

DS
nees to play Rioli in the vfl as a mid and keep him there.

Jack Graham with a fair bit of the footy and 10 tackles might have to be considered

Nice evening next Friday apparently.
I'm tipping an upset.
The cats are due.
Plus I wanna see Prickly Scott spooking it up.

Very disappointing performance at both levels so selectors have a different scenario to consider this week. Players in VFL who you would have expected to be pushing their claims for AFL did not and players in the ones who have been doing reasonably well most of the year simply put in shockers on Friday night. Do you give those players in the ones a chance to redeem themselves (something that Hardwick has done over the years after a bad loss) or do you make some statements like they have with Rioli? What is clear and has been stated by Dimma we definitely need some bigger bodies so my changes would be:
In: Lambert (if fit) is a no-brainer as we really missed his contested work and his spread work on Friday night
Possible ins: Towner, Graham (purely for their bigger bodies)
Outs: Higgins (like Rioli he needs to go back to VFL, find the ball and get his confidence and spark back)
Bolton (just didn't do enough)
Can't decide on the 3rd out...
Don't think next week is the ideal time to bring in a lightweight like Naish
Even though Soldo's game was not great he deserves another go before we bring back CCJ (obviously Chol is not ready). It's hard to blame Soldo for his poor performance when so many of his teammates were down. Only a handful of players could look the coach in the eye after friday night.

Sort of agree with this.
On paper I give us no chance but neither did I give the Bulldogs or North a chance against us.

They have to lose one sooner or later and now they are two games and percentage clear they might just switch off a bit.

Unfortunately Geelong have a very well balanced team this year - annoyingly they seem to have the right mix of height, speed, strength and flair, which makes them a formidable opposition and difficult to match up on. Probably time for Townsend to come in and give us some real genuine grunt and determination and hopefully make a few Geelong players feel the wrath of his tackles. Just not sure who he would replace though.

It wont surprise to see at least one of Graham or Towner in.

Most likely Graham will return.

If Hawkins doesnt play Garth might be omitted.

you could be right about that. Unfortunately Garth looks one-dimensional and is therefore exposed when he doesn't have a designated stopping role.

Soldo gotta go. Garth well he should but who comes in.

Playing without the both of them wouldn’t be a bad start. Both are useless.
Carthwaite is Johnny Manton part 2. Too small for a key defender, but slower then a tortoise
Soldo. Just a waste of time. Getting a cardboard cut out of David Honeybun, would be the same.

Kelly has to be tagged.

That would be a job for graham wouldnt it?

If we dont tag kelly, we dont win.

Townsend must be given a game. This game will suit him. Geelong defence isn’t fast and he is tough enough to break packs and stop there drive outside def 50.
Why did we keep him on the list if we aren’t prepared to play him.

Our forward line on Friday night should be

Butler Lynch Rioli
Castagna Balta Townsend

We need a mindset to really hurt the Cats with hard chasing, hard tackling, just like we did to them in QF in 2017 with Cotch leading by example. That's what North did to us last Friday night and it wins games. Towner and Graham in to add that hurt and would like Rioli back in on the proviso that he brings back his tackling game but I can't see who to drop just on one bad game. Garthwaite has to stay in for backline height. Otherwise put Balta full back or back pocket but that would mean Chol comes in as 2nd ruck...NO.
In: Towner, Graham.
Out: Higgins, Butler.

Soldo does not want to mark the ball..

had a few chances last game and punched it away...gives us Bugger all around the ground as well..

I think CCj was better...

P.Naish must be close for a game..

I'd prefer leaving Caddy in the forward line rather than bringing in Towner.

For me Graham in, probably Bolton out is an obvious change (but could easily be Butler). If Lambert is fit, then he replaces the other one.

We got beat by North due to their superior height going inside 50 and could do the same with Geelong unless we get another body in there to support Lynch.

Smacked out of the middle too, I get that, but we just allowed North to slingshot so easily out of their D50. I don't think we've converted so poorly going inside 50 for a long time (shots per inside 50) and that had a lot to do with not bringing the ball to ground and getting our smalls into the game. Whether we get better in the middle is irrelevant if we can't keep the ball in our F50. That's what our whole game plan is created from, as even if we lock it up and force a stoppage, it means we can set ourselves up defensively. We didn't get that time on Friday hence why it looked like our defence was so stretched.

I'm not sure if its the thinner ground but we do struggle with scores inside 50 at Marvel. Of the games played in 2018 and 2019, we have only scored at greater than 40% twice (both in 2018) and 1 of them was 40.7%. All the others have been below 40%. We have averaged below 40% in all 3 games there this year (including the Sydney win). We've been under 40% 3 times at the G too, Collingwood (35.6%), Melbourne (35.2% - when they flooded the backline) and Essendon (34.8% - when we probably should have built an arc). All other games including the loss to GWS we have been over 45%.

I think theres something in that, in that we can't get cleaner ball to the outside at that ground like we can at the G etc.

We havent learned how to put time into Sidebottom or Whitfield yet either
