Bulldogs v Tigers - Gameday Thread

It was noticeable tonight how some of our B graders were found wanting when taking on more senior roles. Our prospects are not good with the current list. Some can play supporting roles, but we will need to replace the topliners somehow. Who will be the next Cotchin, Rance, Reiwolt types?

So who has trade value????

What are you insinuating in this comment?
That Cotchin, Martin, & Grimes were all rested in the one game. It was carefully broken up to avoid media scrutiny. Now that we have lost I doubt it will.

The club has been very secretive about injuries this year.

We look demoralised. No spark. No pride.

Please put a broom through the football Department and start again.

Papers must have bren stamped tonight.

New modern day plans. New structures.

New coaching panel.

There is talent in the list but our coaching panel are still using dimma's game plan that went out of vogue with the 6x6x6 and stand on the mark rules.
I've been saying that for quite a while now, including when Dimma was still there last year. All those close losses happened for a reason/s. Mini can't paper over all the cracks e.g defence has turned into Swiss cheese. Our disposal skills are near bottom of the league now.

It's were we are at sadly .. the recruiting teams obsession for getting half back flankers .. instead of Midfielders and and Tall Forwards has not helped us at all .. They have recurited like Jack , Cotch , Meatball , Lynch and Dusty etc will play forever in 2019 form :( .

The list for the new incoming coach is in worse shape than when Dimma took over. I’m genuinely worried about the outlook over the next few years. It’s going to get really ugly. Apart from Bolton who’s flakey we have no young stars coming through.

Or it just might be that he is a seriously flawed footballer who covers his weaknesses in lower competition.

No. He's not being coached well. He's 22 yrs old. If you can do some excellent things sometimes, you can be encouraged, trained and primed to do them consistently. You might see it more at VFL level atm, but there can be a carry-over to AFL with the aforementioned happening. It's called player development. I see Cumbo making a lot of poor decisions, mostly from compulsively playing on with no poise or variation unless marks within range.

He also has an AFL ready body: strong, good overhead for his height, fit and fast with a potentially good boot once he gets kicking consistency - confidence is huge in all this and I think Dimma may have demoralised him somewhat, maybe with too high expectations for chasing and tackling. See what happened to Butler and then Castagna. DRioli had to go back to save his career.

Bad habits or behaviors can be unlearned or altered - even by animals. Cumbo has serious potential. If you want to lose him and cut him off the list, watch other clubs rush to grab him and make him into the player he can be.

Yes I take your point, but I don't think he sits well alongside the 3 amigos who were also young but consistently thrived on the pressure of the big stage.

Every time we lose like this, the mantra of 'play the kids' starts to fade into a distant echo.

The hard reality is that after two years you usually know if you have a keeper. The mistake is to keep the ones who won't be part of a premiership campaign. I fear we have recruited poorly in recent years.

Well, that was a depressing performance.

The first quarter was just a disaster. At quarter time I think we had 9 inside 50s to their 22, absolutely ridiculous. You can hardly expect the defence to do much about that. By the end of the game it was 64 to 46 but the damage was already done and the game was over.

There was an interview with Broad at quarter time where he said we just couldn't get pressure on the ball, seemed to improve a lot in the second quarter although no reward for all that effort.

We are clearly out of the running for the finals so it is definitely time to play the youngsters.

Coulthard is a revelation, he looks great.

Cumberland, I reckon his issue is between the ears. As someone above said, he needs coaching - he could well be the type who lacks confidence unless he is going well. The way we get Cumberland going well is to develop his talents. He drops an easy mark then takes a much harder contested mark, the ability is there, he needs it refined and he needs to believe.

Bauer was just ok, clearly not many opportunities but he looked to be trying. Young and only really his first game given the little time he had last time. Needs more experience now.

Footscray clearly have deficiencies. But, gee, do they play well as a team. There is always an outlet, they always have players in position to intercept or to run in to try and get the ball. They get found out against the really good teams but they sure make up for a lot of their deficiencies through the support they give each other. Their list is probably just not good enough to go all the way, but it isn't far off and if they could fill a couple of holes they would be right up there.

In contrast we lack skills: the number of kicks that miss the target, handballs to the feet or over the head, it is all just a bit below par. The footy IQ seems to be missing and this was something we had in spades when we were winning flags, we had players who could read the game better than our opposition. Plus, one thing I really don't get, and especially against a team that run up and down the ground all night and are constantly harassing, is the way we kick to a stationary target, FFS run at the ball and kick it to a player on the move. This is so obvious in our forward line, the ball gets bombed in because everyone is stationary. The slipping over is really grating, it reminds me of how we failed to keep our feet in the wilderness decades. One thing I notice about good teams, they keep their feet so they can stay in the contest, this needs fixing and pronto.

The umpiring was the usual mess. I think it was Bont, but there was that Pickett tackle where he got the player high. The player he was tackling had dipped a little, looked like he was trying to accelerate quickly, and a free was paid for high contact. Ok, fair enough, the rule says high contact draws a free. What sh%ts everyone is the fact that there were maybe a dozen similar instances of high contact in the next 15 minutes and none are paid. If you are going to pay incidental high contact, pay it every bloody time or not at all, mixing it up is just a mess. You don't know what they are going to decide from one minute to the next because they are all over the place.

While I largely agree with this, then you look at Ross. For the last few years he has looked like he will never make it, and he just looked so much like a fringe or depth player, but he is now looking like a genuinely good player. Seems to have discovered poise which gives him the time to dispose to advantage and he has the skills to kick direct to a team mate.

We do have to persist with some of the youngsters, and we need to recruit better. Maybe they should just put a ban on recruiting half back flankers and concentrate on recruiting some mids and key forwards.

I also think our player development, which was great for a couple of years, has really dropped off. We're not improving the young players, something is not working there.

You can't really compare like that: firstly Cumbo is almost the only SF as Coulthard is brand new arrival and Mansell also a newbie who has a had similarly interrupted FL opportunities. Different team; time and opposition now. Game has moved on with RFC success changing the way it's played. Many teams have matched our style, even refined it with better disposal skills.

You've only just noticed? Posters on here still disputing it might have been an idea to take JVR instead of Brown. Compare the Pair. One has put in several strong and promising performances playing as a KPF at AFL, like kicking about 7 goals against us in 2 games this year to contribute strongly to the winning margin. The other yet to play an AFL game.

But, hey, we have such great HBFs that we made DRioli play on a really bad ankle clearly and Mansell had about 2xDs. Meanwhile Old Man Jack dawdles around our FL as the only standing KPF at 34 (Bauer is just beginning and long way to go with an U18 body type!)

Bauer, Cumberland, Coulthard, Banks, Young, Mansell.....

Not far off it really.
You forgot Cumbo. More of a natural forward than most on our list. But needs cultivating and confidence building.

The others may all succeed but noticeably lightly-built with possible exception of Mansell. Include Ryan too. Still think Ralphsmith can improve too.

Yes, the rebuild has started but these guys need some years to develop AFL bodies, strength and traits. So it's going to require patience.

Forget about picking out individuals. We simply don't have the prospective class in our younger brigade to replace those we have or will soon lose from the premiership era. And we have had no high draft picks due to selling the house. We simply have to trade value for high draft picks otherwise we're in the wilderness for a long time.

5th lowest percentage this year really says it all. And that includes this year's basket cases West Coast & North.

Play the youngsters now for the last 3 games. Should have happened a long time ago.
