Bulldogs v Tigers - Gameday Thread

Is not why we lost, but we are too slow with Nank and Soldo in the side. Would rather have had a look at Biggie, to see how he went.

A lot of our players couldn't keep their feet, the Dogs players didn't seem to have the same problem.

The past two weeks have been a brutal reality check. Combined inside 50s of 137-91 show how often the ball is being sent in.
Our midfield is getting absolutely smashed & as a result our defence looks broken.
When reliable guys like Broady are making simple errors it's an indication that the sheer weight of numbers has overwhelmed them.

Cooked but what a great ride this seasons been.No Lynch no Gibcus and Jack busting a gut every week flying a lone hand.Balta,Rioli and Vlaustin have been first class down back and despite the odd hiding here and there we have a bit in the cupboard to play with going forward.

Your post highlights the trouble we are in.
Young, Cumberland. Coulthard, Bauer , Banks ,Ralpsmith, Dow , Sonsie , Clarke.
All the above have a long long way to go to be regular senior players.
Some look doubtful already, Young Cumberland,Ralphsmith, Dow and Sonsie.
The recruiting department really needs to lift its game.
Sadly the old troops are not performing either.

we are clearly not used to that ground.. at all..

not why we lost but that place is like watching and playing football at a carnival ..

and the Dogs jumpers were an eyesore, maybe it was a ploy of theirs..?

I am going to say it but we lost it at selection.

It was pure madness playing both Soldo and Nank. It’s ok if one is relieving the other in the ruck coming off the bench.

But having Soldo replace Riewoldt in our forward line is pure madness. Soldo struggles around the ground let alone have the smarts to play in the forward line.

If Melbourne can’t do it with Gawn & Grundy, why would we try it? Because Nank is too small against the bigger rucks.

At least Ryan can sort of play as a forward.

I agree. Have enjoyed this season more than the previous two years. We’ve had some really solid wins. Just a shame we’ve run of steam now.

Club stuffed up by giving the reigns to a bloke who was desperate for a senior gig. Should have gone with someone who had no interest in keeping the job and used this season to play all the kids and see who has the potential to make it. Been an absolute wasted season and we are none wiser if the likes of Biggy, Sonsie etc have the ability to be AFL footballers. Guys like Bauer, Banks should have been in a long time ago. Why not throw Tresize in the squad and see what he can show. We are screaming for ball users and he is one. Cumbo should have been given the rest of the year to show something without the concern of being dropped. Just been such a waste

In the wake of a 9 goal smashing, I hope the brains trust have some plans for the final few games of the season.
Still a mathematical chance. Weird season. Always play for finals until you can't get in. Footy 101. Lose to the Saints and it's curtains.

Sorry - I don’t think you throw the bath water out when we have still been a fair chance of making the 8. Until last night, our destiny was in our hands but unfortunately it no longer is.

Agree on wasted season for trialling the youngsters but I don't think Mini had a choice in the direction for the remainder of the year. He would have been advised to try and make finals, not to end the careers of the older guys. It would be interesting to know what he would selling as a plan for next year.

Well, that was a depressing performance.

The first quarter was just a disaster. At quarter time I think we had 9 inside 50s to their 22, absolutely ridiculous. You can hardly expect the defence to do much about that. By the end of the game it was 64 to 46 but the damage was already done and the game was over.

There was an interview with Broad at quarter time where he said we just couldn't get pressure on the ball, seemed to improve a lot in the second quarter although no reward for all that effort.

We are clearly out of the running for the finals so it is definitely time to play the youngsters.

Coulthard is a revelation, he looks great.

Cumberland, I reckon his issue is between the ears. As someone above said, he needs coaching - he could well be the type who lacks confidence unless he is going well. The way we get Cumberland going well is to develop his talents. He drops an easy mark then takes a much harder contested mark, the ability is there, he needs it refined and he needs to believe.

Bauer was just ok, clearly not many opportunities but he looked to be trying. Young and only really his first game given the little time he had last time. Needs more experience now.

Footscray clearly have deficiencies. But, gee, do they play well as a team. There is always an outlet, they always have players in position to intercept or to run in to try and get the ball. They get found out against the really good teams but they sure make up for a lot of their deficiencies through the support they give each other. Their list is probably just not good enough to go all the way, but it isn't far off and if they could fill a couple of holes they would be right up there.

In contrast we lack skills: the number of kicks that miss the target, handballs to the feet or over the head, it is all just a bit below par. The footy IQ seems to be missing and this was something we had in spades when we were winning flags, we had players who could read the game better than our opposition. Plus, one thing I really don't get, and especially against a team that run up and down the ground all night and are constantly harassing, is the way we kick to a stationary target, FFS run at the ball and kick it to a player on the move. This is so obvious in our forward line, the ball gets bombed in because everyone is stationary. The slipping over is really grating, it reminds me of how we failed to keep our feet in the wilderness decades. One thing I notice about good teams, they keep their feet so they can stay in the contest, this needs fixing and pronto.

The umpiring was the usual mess. I think it was Bont, but there was that Pickett tackle where he got the player high. The player he was tackling had dipped a little, looked like he was trying to accelerate quickly, and a free was paid for high contact. Ok, fair enough, the rule says high contact draws a free. What sh%ts everyone is the fact that there were maybe a dozen similar instances of high contact in the next 15 minutes and none are paid. If you are going to pay incidental high contact, pay it every bloody time or not at all, mixing it up is just a mess. You don't know what they are going to decide from one minute to the next because they are all over the place.

I agree DS.

What I saw with a few of the juniors was how they never looked settled with the ball last night.
I suppose that would never be the case when you concede 9 Goals from the get go.
A few times Bauer and Cumbo had the ball in the clear with space.
Almost instantaneously the ball was on the ground and they had lost the free space.
The inferred pressure made them lose the ball and their composure as if they had just suffered a seizure.
Very upsetting to see this.

Just got to keep playing the kids and whilst it will get ugly it is necessary.
Would like to see some others get promoted as mentioned by everyone.

There is no quick fix to this.
Just chuck on a dvd from our recent golden run, charge up a glass and stay calm (Balmey style)!
This will take a while.

Don’t think I’ve seen our players get tackled so much in one game.
Just seem to hold onto the ball too long trying to make a decision

Who are these mythical youngsters bashing down the door?

Couldn't agree more. The number of times we either kicked or handballed to a stationary target was mind blowing. And the slipping over.. did the players have the correct boots on? It just seemed unfathomable to me that at AFL Level you could have so many players from the same team slipping over or fumbling the ball and it wasn't just our young players doing it.

Good to see Kenny mentioned the free kick differential tonight. Our coach/es need to take note.
