Big test for Brett against Ling this week.
He's been terrific so far this year but this will be a real test as to how much he has improved as no doubt the Cats tagger will go to him again.

The Lions did a good job with Ling with the way Power played. It is amazing how the Cats and Ling always seem to be able to dictate Ling's matchup.

In this scenario would it be worth putting Lids as FF, with no-one else within a kooee of him and letting him go to work on Ling? I think his speed of the mark would make for easy goals. If the Cats switch Scarlett, or anyone, onto him he should be told to head straight into the guts.

Of course we could do what we used to do... and target the tagger for a serious physical work over. Sure only Tuck and Foley would be up for this but would be great to see.

Well Done Bretta!!!! :clap :clap :clap :clap

Whilst I think Lids has steadily improved this year I still don't think he's played a game where he's strung together 4 good quarters (a bit like Richmond the team). If he starts to do this he will become the very good player that he has the potential to be. I'm looking forward to the game when he takes this next step. I'm sure it is only just around the corner... hopefully against Sydney this weekend.

Quietly having a outstanding season.

In my books has moved into the A grade midfielders. Not the A+'s who are the true elite but Deldio has become the player that we all imagined he would.

Spot on

And his only 21!

Still needs to kick more then handball.

Although his vision and hand skills have improved out of sight this year. Can be quite damaging by hand know. Still thinks he should be getting 2 kicks to every handball, at the moment the ratios is about 1.5 handballs for every kick.

And your right there also.
His foot is lethal. One of the deadliest kicks in our team.
But he will get there.

Fair point about 4 quarters but as you say he's got plenty of mates on that front.

Brett's definitely taken his game up a notch offensively and is racking up the possessions this year, most of them quality.
Seems to be dealing with the tag much better this year too with the added size to his frame. No doubt he's a Roll Royce athlete.

In saying that I think he needs to round out his game better defensively if he is going to be the complete package as an elite midfielder but he's now regularly having a significant impact on games. That's all you can ask from your number one selection.

At 21 you'd think he still has his best to come.

Kicking versus handball can depend on the role your given. If he's asked to get in and under then you'd expect a higher percentage of handballs. If he's the go to player then more kicks are likely. Lids has so many attributes its going to be one of those dilemmas about how o play him for most damaging effect. We've already in his time at the Tigers play a multitude of roles back, middle and forward.

This might have been brought up before...
But out of the number one draft picks still in the AFL...
And if they all became available for a trade at the end of this year...
I reckon Deledio and Hodge would be the 2 most popular... for the clubs knocking on the window for a flag in particular... yes Kreuzer for a club still a few years away...
In saying that; I am not a Nick Riewoldt fan as I think his kicking is horrid and his body is failing him... and I am only just becoming a Cooney fan...

1994 - Jeff White (Fremantle) -now Melbourne
1996 - Michael Gardiner (West Coast) -now St. Kilda
1997 - Travis Johnstone (Melbourne) -now Brisbane
1998 - Des Headland (Brisbane Lions) -now Freo
1999 - Josh Fraser (Collingwood)
2000 - Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
2001 - Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)
2002 - Brendon Goddard (St Kilda)
2003 - Adam Cooney (Western Bulldogs)
2004 - Brett Deledio (Richmond)
2005 - Marc Murphy (Carlton)
2006 - Bryce Gibbs (Carlton)
2007 - Matthew Kreuzer (Carlton)

I really rate Lids' toughness (liked the self pulling back into place of his dislocated finger on the weekend and then straight back into the job!) and willingness to play team football....

It's an interesting list with only the much maligned Dessie Headland having played in a premiership side.
Lids would be in the top 5 at this point and you'd expect him to be a lot higher by the end of his career if he continues to progress as he is.

Over here in the EPL when Kevin "Captain Courage" Nolan dislocated his finger and went off grimacing to the physios, all the commentators were singing his praises like he was some kind of hero for getting through it like a real man. What a ponce.

They have no idea. Lids is a real man lol. :cupgold
