Re: Brett Deledio

i think that Lids needs to do more gut running, i dont think he likes running to the max until there is nothing left in the tank.

I think the smart way to play him may be, 10min midfield, 10min half forward/forward pocket, then 10min midfield per quarter.

then in those ten minutes he can run his a**hole off.

Interesting year for Deledio. In a holding pattern a bit.

He got touched up by Cameron Ling. Got mauled. Got owned, jail style. Ling told him to take the bottom bunk.
That's Ok, Ling is as good as lock down as there is. And that was the black night of the year. One kick. Amazing.
He bounced back the next three weeks and had 22,24, 25 possies. Then Justin Sherman got on top of him. The thing that most disturbed me about this was that Sherman physically man handled Lids. Sherman makes fairy floss look tough. This one disturbed me far more then the Ling mauling. Sherman should not be able to run, jump and compete with Brett Deledio if he is giving it his all and is mentally locked into games. And this is the test for the young man, getting mentally stronger. Gut running. But again he bounced back with 25,23 possies after the Sherman game.
Even better was the come back after the broken hand. Up forward he looked a different type. He was a match up nightmare, very much a different match up when he is flying for overhead marks. Hard to find a tag for a guy who can burn the turf and take a overhead mark, not many of those around. And bags of 5,2,2,2 over the last few weeks gave the impression that he may be a better option up forward pushing into the middle then the other way around. Personally I think Wallace needs to dictate to the opposition and expose who ever is playing on Deledio. If James McDonald goes to him, push him deep. If Paul Wheatley goes to him push him up into the midfield.

Very few people can play that role, only those with massive footballing smarts can push into the play. Hird did it, G.Ablett does it and Adam Goodes does it some weeks. These are Deledio's challenges for 2008, become a gut runner and smart enough to expose the bloke his playing on and get mentally stronger. If he does 2 of these 3 he will a super year, if he does three out of three he becomes elite.

Good Post Scooper. His versatility as a real asset, but as you say needs to learn to cope with some of the Tags he gets because he aint gonna get any easier. I fully agree with what you say about Wallace exposing his opponent and his versatility should make this a pretty simple task.

On the money with this one Scooper. Well summed up.

Last year was just the last year of his apprenticeship.
Lids now has his 60 games under the belt, has played back forward and mid to give him the well rounded grounding he needs.
Your last paragraph summed it up perfectly SCOOPER.
I bet only Claw Diggler and Laff will complain when he steps into the same bracket as the other three. ;D

Re: Brett Deledio

I've said all along that Deledio should be an attacking weapon...that means play him forward, let go for speccies, burn off whoever is running with him in the forward half of the field, and we will have the most devastating burst player in the league. (and i don't mean burst in its usual pseudo negative use.)

Re: Brett Deledio

i think lids role should be similar to that of the recently retired james *smile*. he should play mainly half forward, but pinch hit in the middle and the goalsquare

Re: Brett Deledio

Disregarding our recent additions I believe Lids is the only player we have that become truly elite i.e Hird,Buckley,Carey,Voss.

I am one who personally dosent care where he plays as I think he can be a star an a real weapon where ever he plays, todays half backline seems to be just as important as the midfield is in certain games.

Not to concerened about a 20 year old in a poor side who gets a job put on him each week an only has his colours lowered twice

no problems. theyre not going to start making sweeping statements this year..lids to be used as a forward, like last four rounds......one reason why we are not interested in welsh

I don't mind that, as long as he is not wasted in the backline, I don't care where he plays.

40+ goals next year for Deledio? This is of course if he spends 60% or more of his time in the forward line.

deledio up forward is the easy way out imo

tell him to get fit and run off his taggers because we need his class in the middle, he is a good size now so should be able to handle it in the guts

no doubt he can push forward and do damage i just dont like it on a permanent basis

Agree Rocky Balboa. We need this sort of class rotating through the midfield. Yep rest him up forward, but we need an engine room that can set us up, up forward. Foley can't do it alone as we have seen before.

Well I like the idea of Lids up forward just fine. I think he will dominate up forward this year.

Playing as a high forward and then coming down towards the middle and then heading back towards goal when we need some extra run is the way to go. Short stints on the ball depending on opposition match ups is OK with me.

Me too Tim & then throw him on the ball to mix it up.

Hopefully we see Lids evolve into a player like Hird but with more pace.

if you want another hird he better start learning to win a bit more hard ball.

Don;t agree with the Rock much, but agree on this. Lids is very please with himself - which in the right player may not be a bad thing, but I'm not sure it sits well for him. Terry will know how to handle him best and if he plays more fwd than midfield then I naturally cede to his knowledge of the young guy - but it does seem a waste to me too.

Great post. He needs to learn how to run until he pukes and then to keep pushing.

Not much wrong with Lids spending time up forward if guys like Bling, Connors, Edwards, Jackson and maybe Newman and Raines can join Foley, Coughlan, Tuck, Tivvers and Captain Toad rotating through the midfield.
With Richo, Browneye, Kanye and Lids as our core forwards there's some firepower to be utilised.
