the issue i have with Ellis is that he was a much better player earlier in his career. i remember a game in his second year where he amassed 40 possessions against Melbourne for example. The rot started in the Norf final when he got tagged out of the game. I reckon that performance destroyed his confidence, he has never recovered and has been fragile ever since. you'd think the scars would have evaporated after playing in a premiership, but I don't think it has. yes he was servicable without being a star in 2017 and has been reasonable in some games this year. But he is 26 in a couple of months and in the peak of his career. at best Ellis is in the bottom 6 of our best 18. we should be expecting much more of him when you think back to the promise he showed in his early years.
Absolutely spot on. Should be in our top 5 not bottom 5 of our best side. Has been lucky this year with injuries which have given him a chance.

So according to you Ellis should be up there with Cotch, Dusty, Tross n Jaaack to make it into our best five players. Ahead of Shedda, Presty, Lynch, Nank, Lamblett, Grub, Rioli, Bash etc etc. Bloody laughable dud one. Out of form he's fringing 20 to 25 on the list. In form he's a quality second tier player interchangeable anywhere around 8 to 15 in the side.

He should be our Steele Sidebottom. A bloke that gets a *smile* load of the ball and can also turn game.

Based on his early career form yes I believe he shoukd be up there.

Geez! Nah. Decent enough player in form but never premium.
Perhaps that's why you're such a grumpy bastard ;D, bagging out players n coaches left right n centre. Way over rating the playing list

Don't understand this thinking personally. He is what he is, not what some supporters imagined he could be. And what he is is a premiership player in some of his best form.

He is also a leader standing up when we desperately need one.

If 'bottom six of the top 18' of the best side over the last three years is what he is, I'll take it.

What he said

He doesnt have to be top 6, or 12th or 21st player in our club.
There is no magical list of players in 'best' order
But each week he is in the 22 and doing his role to win matches.
He is clearly doing that.
The winning is what counts

i never said our bottom 6 was weak. we probably run deeper than any other team in the league. But Ellis should be ahead of the likes of Lambert and Houli and at least on par with Prestia.

Why?

He's not faster than those blokes. Or stronger. Or more agile, or athletically gifted.

I don't understand being annoyed at him because he should be better. He works as hard as any of them. If he isn't better, then he isn't better.

FWIW, there've been a lot of games this year I've had him above Prestia and Houli. Lambo's a horse of a different colour.

actually he is athletically gifted. thats his biggest asset.

If you look at his season averages according to footywire, his stats peaked in 2014 and 2015 before dropping off. and virtually all of his Career Statistical Rankings and Career Highlights were pre the 2015 elimination final. I admit we are a lower possession team these days, but it still backs up my argument.

What is your argument? That he should be better? How? Saying that either means he doesn't work hard enough, or isn't trying. Say what you want about Ellis, but you can't question his work ethic.

Also, stats aside, the last couple of games he's played have been the best of his career.

No coincidence that's happening with him playing (finally) in his actual position.

Now if the argument is that his development has been stymied by poor ultra defensive game plans early in his career, and being played out of position, then I could maybe see a point. But just being critical of Ellis because he's not the player some people imagined is odd. If he has to measure up to a Richmond supporters optimism, he's always going to fall short. Even Martin does.

I don’t think Dimma’s going to use if in exactly the opposite way that he just acknowledged he plays best.

Bobbles weapon is his run.

Thats why he plays best on the wing.

But his contested stuff is still horrible at times which is interesting because he has the ability to play harder and has done so.

He is one of the better more reliable kicks at goal though also.

These type of days aren't good Brandon days normally. Let's see how he fares. It'll be a good indicator of how his mental strength has improved.
