Bosses of the world rejoice- PRE outage Friday 2nd December

It's free to register and that's all you have to do to take advantage of the ignore function, which BTW is far from fancy technology.

Because people can still see the posts of people on their ignore list if they read the forum without logging in or before they log in. It's only 100% foolproof if the forum is private and requires registration to view posts.

If someone chooses to ignore certain posters, why would they ever read the forum whilst not logged in?

* Why would you give "Guests" the ignore privilege ?

* If they don't have the privilege, then how will posts be "ignored" if you are a "Guest" ?

I doubt if "Guests" would have access to the Ignore function. lIKE THEY DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO THE nOTIFY FUNCTION/

........ ah ...... just because ................. or you have a desire to read someone you have ignored anyway ........... or your pc setup keeps deleting your passwords on exiting because you want it that way and it's easier to read as a Guest and only post something you want to because you think it's importnat rather than be logged in "forever".

I dunno Disco, but the ignore feature seems like a good idea but is kinda flawed and just to make some people feel good about having an Ignore List.

How about another example, of how it works. If someone ignores another poster, but the ignored posters post gets "quoted" in a thread, does it stay ignored or will the post then be seen by the person ignoring (ie. like you can't modify a post if it ends up quoted before you modify it) ?

Oi vei, my head is spinning.

In a nutshell Disco, it's a little thing called "freedom of choice" for whatever reason you want.

In other forums that have it you don't see quoted posts from posters on your ignore list. It's hard to follow the conversation occasionally but there's not much point visiting places like this if you plan to ignore too many people.

It's a pretty simple function with pretty simple intentions that's worked for a long time at a lot of places. There's not much more needs to be said about it. If you don't like it, don't use it.

Bout sums it up perfectly

The easiest way to ignore someone, is to simply keep skipping past their (blah blah blah) posts. Doesn't cost anything in fancy technology.

Why are you complaining? You'll still be able to do that if you wish or do you have a fear of being ignored. ;D

Who says, I'm complaining by adding to the thread ToO ? Simply helping with Disco and Rosy posting they couldn't understand what JLT was trying to say.

As always, feel free to interpret as suits you mate. Add away bro.

Can you collect stats on the ignore function?
If so, is there going to be a table posted to see who is ignored the most?

I reckon a few of my accounts would have my other accounts on ignore.

I'm not sure that would be wise. Choosing to ignore a person should be a personal decision. I see no upside in publicising a Ignored Top 10.

Isn't the internet wonderful.

Here we can debate/comment/vilify a subject to ad nauseum and not cop a punch in the gob which we would so much deserve if we harped and harped on likewise in the street/playground/footy ground.

Funny thread.

People have often requested an ignore function. They will soon have one. They can use it or give it a miss. I doubt too many will use it. There are plenty of functions on PRE exclusive to registered and logged in members. If people choose to read the forum anonymously they don't have the benefit of the additional functions. The good thing is that way they can't reply to those whose posts are annoying them either. It's pretty simple.

RST thanks for trying to explain to me why Turnip thinks the function is a waste of time. I don't agree that it is. It's simply an option for those who wish to use it. If they really don't want to read some posters' comments then they have the option to stay logged in. It's pretty simple.

Pretty funny how some never take things at face value.

It's not censorship or restricting one's right to an opinion as shamekha alluded to.  It's not a function for those who don't choose to register/log in on the forum.  It's not compulsory to use.

If people are negative about the ignore function I think I'll hide when/if they find out about some of the other new moderator options. :blah

I don't think a whole lot will be different for posters poppa.  They'll able to ignore entire boards if they choose to.  There's a buddy list option...dunno much about that though.

I've focused more on the new admin and moderator functions so far.  Two I look forward to, and will hopefully save us time and bother, are the first few posts needing approval and a warning system for posters. There are also security things that we don't notice.

There won't be massive changes and a lot probably won't notice much difference.  I guess we'll all learn as we go along.

Just so people know, if you ignore a user, they won't be able to send you Private messages either.
