Ben Lennon

Absolutely. And that's not a knock on Nick.

I like Jones, but I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest he'll have it over Floss in any aspect of the game, except maybe leg speed. Vlas has better skills, better reading of the play, is better overhead - just a more complete footballer IMO. What do you see in Jones that you rate so highly?

Perhaps. Flirting with using a first round selection because he's a type we don't have isn't the correct way to draft Sin. Especially early.

You misunderstand me.

It's not flirting, it when all other things are equal then go for needs. I suspect they didn't see much between jones and Lennon, hence the rumours that we would pick Jones if ben was gone, but picked Lennon because list balance tipped the scales in his favour.

Nothing wrong with that. It's not like Lennon was a speculative pick, he was mentioned as top 10 right up to draft time.

Bah Humbug! The kids starting his second season FFS. Got a handful of games mainly as the sub last year n will do similar this year. Just another growth n development year for him this year n then start to look for senior consolidation from next year onwards.

Total and utter sense.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I was a Blake Acres & Darcy Lang Fan in 2013 and hoped we take 1 of the 2 players

Hope Lennon comes through and proves me wrong but looks as though his game against the doggies was dissapointing

Hope the coaches let him know more is expected

Yeah was probably a bit harsh. Just don't see the glimpses yet.

BTW you undersell Jones. Has great scope. End up better than our Flossy ILHO.

Surprisingly, I disagree. Thought Zac Jones is just not a natural footballer. Hard and willing like Nate but not a great student of the game. The one I wanted from that draft crop was Matt Crouch. Convinced he becomes another Libba type. No flash ball winner who tackles all day.

I'm firmly in on Ben Lennon. Too silky too not make it. Looked a lot more at home on Saturday. I'm, not judging anyone's skills on Saturday. Wind was blowing, hot and humid, everyone jacked up for first games. Lot of headless chook stuff. I don't like him in the back half. He's a finisher. That's my only quibble on him. But we need quality kicks from the back, we don't have enough. That's another reason why I would've thrown $$$ at Malchow. But I'm in on Lennon.

I'll have a Pinchy on that one Leysy, payment due by 2020

His kicking has been advertised as elite - yet to see that. Reminds of Conca's kicking hype pre draft. Apprently he was an elite kick.

In fact on what I've seen so far I'd describe Lennon as a barely average by foot. Add that to a lack of pace and there's the worry.

He's peeled off some sublime passes, you must have missed em.

Had a few scrubbers thrown in for good measure and appears to get lazy with it occasionally but his foot skills are certainly nothing to worry about long term IMO.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

First up - He looks like he's beefed up a bit. Legs definitely look stronger.

He had 13 kicks, 3 handballs, 2 marks & 2 tackles. Hardly our worst.

People having a go at his kicking need to have a look at the conditions. Not many targets hit by our boys. The Bulldogs played the ground (and the wind) far better than us.

I think Ben will eventually end up on the forward line. I see him as a young version of Chris Knights.

Is he quick enough? Time will tell. I don't think he's slow, but accept he's not a racehorse. Some players make up for a lack of sheer pace with footy smarts. Time will also tell whether Ben has those smarts or not.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

As for being slow... it's a Jack Riewoldt kind of slow IMO. Can shift his weight into a different direction a fraction of a second before those around him, and is therefore unlikely to ever be regularly caught holding the ball. Lack of pack won't be his downfall.

Kicking - weighted a 30m kick that curved beautifully with the wind to hit a running player on the chest. That one kick shows in technical terms that he's a sublime kick of the sherrin. I haven't seen enough of his decision making or vision in traffic to make an overall judgment of his kicking ability though. His errors late in the game were not slightly misjudged kicks, they were absolute shanks, which funny enough, is a good sign in the context of judging his decision making and vision.

Therefore his game slightly heightened my expectations of him for this year.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

My biggest concern is his contested game.

Kicking is a long second.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Wow...some outrageous calls on a kid based on a practice game in terrible conditions.

Let's wait until at least the end of April before we decide to officially delist him.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I think expectations on our draftees have gone through the roof since Martin and Ellis made such quick transitions to the AFL but it's not a linear process. Some patience is required.

Maybe the wind destroyed his ball drop when kicking

Saw him Friday at training was still just ruuning laps and pretty slowly
But may be just a precaution

Started late. Coming from behind. Give him a break.

That's not good, that happens to me because my ball drop is rubbish

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I think he is the type of player that once it all clicks (body, mind-set, experience), then we will see what his potential is. I don't think his body is at AFL standard yet, which is not unusual for a 19 yo. He does not have pace, inside-ball ability or height that other kids may have that enables them to perform as an 18yo. The rumor I heard (true or false I have no idea) was that he did not return to pre-season in glowing condition, which to me suggests he still has a way to go in the head stakes to realize what is required. Let's hope he makes the mistake only once.

To say he will not make it at this stage is only speculation. A good comparison is Menzel at Carlton, did nothing in his first year, showed some better signs last year. We all hope Lennon might become Steve Johnston, at worst, dare I say it, Kayne Pettifer. Surround Pettifer by a good team and I am sure he would have been better than what he is remembered for.

I think it simply comes down to whether Ben really wants it, and whether the club can extract it out of him. I don't think they have gifted him games so far, which is good. I hope they maintain a tough stance in 2015 and demand higher standards from him, despite I suspect some howls from supporters that might arise if he is seen as stagnating in the seconds.
