As a former club athlete I can say yes you can improve speed with the right training drills but only by a small amount. Having the right parents to give you more fast-twitch muscle fibres really helps (like Shai Bolton). In AFL the most important aspect is explosive speed over the first 5 to 10 metres to break away from packs, evade tackles, not necessarily sustained speed over 100m. Explosive speed can be helped with appropriate resistance training such as squat jumps, hopping and bounding wearing a weighted vest. Great way is wearing a gymnastic belt with long ropes (or a continuous band like Hawthorn use in their training - pic below). A teammate holds the ropes and resists you while you try to run down the track. Or you can have the ropes attached to a weighted disc that you drag along the ground as Usain Bolt uses in this video.Tigers of Old said:Interested to see how his 'speed' coach will help him. He mentioned that he was still disappointed to miss the EF which is good but I hope he understands why he was not selected...bc of some some poor efforts in the Geelong game.

Thanks. I modified the post with a Usain Bolt video.Tigers of Old said:Interesting post. Cheers Mike.
Yes, how time flies! In his last 3 games in 2015 he had 5,16,12 disposals for 1 goal 2 behinds and 2 tackles. Not enough to keep his place as a forward yet Griffiths was a big risk that backfired. So if he is working on his speed, goalkicking and defensive skills that is good, hope he shows us why he was a high pick.BrisTiger24 said:The Geelong performance was last year wasn't it and the EF the year before?

I dont see any tricks with Ben he will be gone 2018 :clapyandb said:Oakley Nichols had speed in spades but not much else Drummond has good speed and endurance but is just average.
Some of the best AFL players lacked speed but brought other assets to the table.
