Absolutely top shelf. Cannot believe how good that show was. Still pinching myself.

Have been to 2 gigs in the last week:

* BACKSTREET BOYS (Rod Laver Arena): Great concert. Great crowd of 13,000, and let me tell, everyone was in total bop till you drop mode.

* DARYL BRAITHWAITE (Kingston City Hall, Moorabbin): Very good gig. Dazza played heaps of his solo hits and even Howzat! There was talk on this site that his gigs leave a bit to be desired, but he was great last night.

Kiwi, I've seen some great bands and some scintillating and inspiring performances, but Sharon Jones was something else altogether! I can't believe what i saw and heard. Remarkable!

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Yeah she is great,

It was the second time I have seen her,

Saw her by almost by accident the first time,

Last year she was the support act to the 'Black keys ', and I , along with everyone else that turned up early, were blown away,

I made sure, that if she ever returned, I would see her again.

Friends of mine asked what she is like, I said imagine James Brown , at his best, in a female body.

Elana James [Band] is doing one gig in Melbourne. It's tonight.

Outstanding trio of jazz guitar, fiddle/vocal and upright bass; Whit Smith, Elana James, Jake Whatsisname.

The stuff that the band calls western swing sounds like something Django and Grapelli might play. The set is uptempo jazz that leans towards ho-down or hootin' Annie. It is high energy and the breaks are short and rare.

A band like this one is not tight or otherwise. They are nano-second perfect and similarly precise in pitch.

Upright bassman Jake is something to see. I've never seen better and maybe none as good.

There were raps on Whit and his lazy lead guitar (maybe Les Paul in style) but I've seen a hundred as good or better.

And similar might be said of James's vocals except that she chooses her songs so well and delivers them so neatly that you think she's Alison Krauss when she's singing. (Her vocal style is more like Connie Stevens BTW. She has a kind of sassy ironic way of subtly playing the ditz. Smart talented type. And kinda purdy.)

The fiddlin is often Grapelli in style. And it's not a style you can get paid to play any way but well.

The material comprises some covers Goodbye Liza Jane, that is traditional I guess, but the original songs, like Twenty-Four Hours a Day are really strong.

Fully awesome live act. If you're in Melbourne and you like either kind of music (Country OR Jazz) you see this chick and her band. Tonight may be your only chance.

Saw them at Golden Plains on the weekend...both good..Jay Reatard did a 30 minutes set and played about 30 songs :hihi.

Highlights of this year's excellent Golden Plains included:

Future of the Left (just what the doctor ordered after what from this point on shall be referred to as the Iron and Wine fiasco).
Ween (what a set - 2 hours of rockin' fun)
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (straight out of the James Brown handbook....awesome).
Jens Lekman (I'm a big fan)
Beirut (sound problems aside, probably my highlight of day 2)
A couple of the Buffalo Tom hits.....took me right back.
The Vines (they do what they do quite well)
The Bamboos (I didn't know much about this band, but they were the Sharon Jones of day 2, complete with full brass section and soulful female lead).
The Dirtbombs (Loved 'em).

Biggest Disappointment: Iron and Wine (I think Sam Beam's latest recorded work has been excellent, but the sound quality, vocals and full band arrangement were terrible to say the least...NOT happy).

All in all a great weekend, that I am still feeling the after effects of (I must be getting old :-\ ).

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Thats a shame about iron and Wine; i have heard big things about them. i agree re Sharon Jones- she is awesome. The bamboos are a melb funk band. recently they backed Eddie Bo from new Orleans and soon they will support stax legend, Eddie Floyd.

One of the highlights of Golden Plains was this song:

Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen

Playing Milano (Brighton Beach) tomorrow night. The Corner later during a national tour. http://www.joncleary.com/shows/main.htm

Brilliant outfit. Outstanding players. Funk/jazz in a pretty mainstream almost pop format. The Funky Meters are probably forbears of this New Orleans combo. (JC and the AMG do a cover of Just Kissed My Baby.)

The style reminded me of some early seventies Alan Price stuff. And given that Cleary is a pom that makes sense. Cleary's vocal has something of Joe Cocker about it too. It's a very good voice. And can the man play? Sheesh.

Certainly one of the best gigs I've been to for a long long time. I very much preferred this gig to the Sharon Jones one. That's more a consequence of taste than a value judgment. But the players are of at least equal quality.

So if New Orleans funk/jazz is appealing to ya it'll be along time till you see a better act than this at a very good Australian venue. Dates again: http://www.joncleary.com/shows/main.htm
