Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Irene Cara. Damn, it is the first paying gig she would have had for 25 years.

Since The Swagman burnt down those sixth rate performers have lost their main source on income in Australia.

I guess there is still Crown Casino or the BDO.

Just got back from the newly renovated (and more expensive) Ronnie's where Van Morrison just played the first of his two gigs there tonight. He was brilliant. A mix of jazz, blues and a little bit of country and western. He played for about 90 minutes before they kicked us all out to let the next crowd in.

Pasty faced and decked out in his typical buttoned up suit, panama hat and glasses he looked typically dour but he was in great form singing as smooth and as well as ever with a band that coped with the changes in style and complemented his songs perfectly (except for the big guy on guitar who looked a bit like David Koch and I suspect sang much the same at times).

Of his well known stuff he did a jazzed up Moondance, starting off playing sax; a bouncy version of Jackie Wilson Said; Wild Nights, ripping along until dropping right down in the chorus for effect; and he closed with Gloria which brought a standing "o" as he dawdled off the stage.

Just down in front of us walking in to a plumb table just as he started (while those of us who got there much earlier sat up the back  ) were Nicole Kidman (bloody tall) and Keith Urban which was quite funny when just before his real Country and Western song The Man announced in a new take on an old joke that he'd made two mistakes in his musical career; the first was doing country and the second doing western. Kidman laughed but I don't think our man Keith did.

All in all a brilliant night.

Absolutely jealous now TGN!! Sounds like it was a brilliant night, I've always wanted to visit Ronnie Scotts. Hopefully I will someday?

Let me know when you come over M33 and I'd be glad to take you. It's a great venue, terrific atmosphere.

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Saw the Dave Matthews Band at Fenway Park in July... best gig and venue to see them at, and has been released this week as a live recording. 8)

That's pretty cool GR. Do you know who was on drums? Was it Carter Beauford?

Yeah, Carter was on drums, the man is an octopus! The usual band line up, but they did have a new guy (guest?) on trumpet.

There were about 35,000 people in the stadium, and plenty of pot! They played for about 3 hours, and mainly their newer material. :guitar

I would love to see the Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds acoustic show live one day. 8)

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Anyone catch The Church on Live at the Basement last night on ABC ? Nice, simple little acoustic set with most songs from their latest album “Uninvited Like the Clouds.”

Good set, but reckon most of the songs sound a lot better under the electric version that the album uses.

I'm envious, I love the way he plays. You're a lucky guy!

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Did anybody get to see the Foo Fighters on Tuesday night at the Opera House???

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Anyone seen a Melbourne band called Hot Little Hands? Would appreciate an opinion.

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

I hope to get tickets to Roger Waters tomorrow. Anyone else planning to go?

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Got my tickets anyway jb. Am excited.

I think I'll also book for a "Day On The Green" concert at All Saints winery. Pete Murray, Tim Finn, Sarah Blasko, Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers, Rebecca Barnard and Shane O'Mara.

Can anyone tel me anything about the last 5?

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Sarah Blasko is awesome. Very good live, just exudes personality on the stage...a bit bizarre, to be honest, but in a good way. I'm surprised more of the older generation haven't picked her up yet...she'd be right up their alley, very mellow, easy to listen to, just a great Aussie talent. So far she's only been given the Triple J treatment...but she's better than that. Certainly better than Missy Higgins, that's for sure. I most highly recommend her.

In fact, I went and bought tickets for her solo show on the 10th...anyone else going?

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Keep this thread open.

After the night of 7th November, I will tell you all about the Greatest Show on Earth.

Stay tuned for the U2 match report on the 8th. ;)

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

Never thought I'd be posting this thread - my "gig" attending days have long since passed, but on Saturday night I saw Bruce Springsteen live in Copenhagen - he's probably the only act I would spend 130 bucks going to see.

Gee, he's still good. When he first released the Seeger sessions album I thought "here we go, he's run out of ideas". But credit to someone who's every single first-release studio album has been all "written and sung by Bruce Springsteen", and who has gone out and done the complete opposite. Never seen him seem to have such fun on stage (and for Bruce that is saying something). These songs getting the loud and rich treatment of a live concert were just sensational.

Did not much of the old stuff - a couple from each of "Nebraska" and "Devils and Dust" (including a great rendition of "Long Time Coming"), one from "Tunnel of Love". Everything else was from the Seeger album except for a surprising "Fire" (the old Pointer Sisters song which Bruce wrote) and the Paul Young song, "Love of the Common People".

One oddity in the encore was "When the Saints go Marching in". At that point I was hoping he might cap it off with Tigerland but no such luck. With the instruments he had I wasn't expecting "Born to Run" or "Born in the USA", but if he had just finished off with an old classic like "Thunder Road" or "The River" it would have been one of the best concerts I'd ever seen.

Re: Been to a good gig lately?

This is the most outstanding post on the subject matter....check it out.

I agree with everything this bloke says ! :hihi
