Bachar Houli - بشار حولي,

Thanks for the freebie Essendon.

Houlis inclusion in the team is a major reason why we are now one of the most efficient users of the ball in the competition.

How refreshing is it to know that we have players in the back half who can run out of defence and actually hit another Richmond player downfield.

Oh did I mention to thank Essendon for their wonderful 2010 Christmas gift? ;D

Lotta love on here for Bachar so reckon I'm gonna get slammed for this but here goes anyway.......

I'm glad he's got that left foot because in all honesty I only see him as a slight upgrade on McMahon

When he's given the ball, with time and space, he is lethal by foot.

I recall Hardwick being asked about him, after the Port Adelaide game in Darwin, where he was widely touted as one of our few positives on the night.

Hardwicks response went along the lines of "he was just OK in his view, good when he had the ball but not happy with his game when he didn't have the ball".

I thought this a bit harsh so have watched him pretty closely since to see if I could make sense of Hardwick's comments.

Last night Houli was very good when he had the ball. He was playing loose in defence for parts of the night, which really suits him to a tee. He receives the ball a lot and runs hard to present when he hasn't got it. It is obvious the players try to get the ball into his hands as he uses it well. The problem is when he has to compete in a one on one, he fails miserably. I did not see him win a single one on one last night. Last night it didn't hurt us but against better opposition it will.

He was let have a free run last night. I'll be interested to see what the opposition does in the next couple of weeks. They can either play a defensive HF on him or play a goal kicker on him who can exploit his lack of ability to win a contest.

If he can fix this part of his game up I'll be over the moon as he really is an A grader when he has the ball in his hands and time or space to use it.

Fair point One eyed. Loose man in defence is the easiest gig in town, and most teams have one. The trick is you have to have a player who can really hurt the opposition playing thie role, because you are giving up a fair bit to create the role in the first place. That is, if you have a loose man, then so do the opposition.

I believe we grabbed Houli because of his ability to do that, and to play as an outside mid. To be the receiver, not the getter. That does not mean he can be unaccountable.

Dimma's comments after the Port game are salient. To be effective, Bachar has to be good with the ball in his hands, but to be complete, it is what he does when he doesn't have it that counts. For this type of player though, that is basically gut running to create options when his team has the ball, or gut running to fill spaces when his team doesn't.

I am satisifed on what I have seen that Bachar does the hard things, the 1%ers when he has to. But most of the time, I want to see him in space.

It will be interesting to see if an opposition side tries to expose him by putting an attacking player on him. So far I don't see that as having happened, but it will surely be a matter of time.

Another Holy-Dooly Houli game. Surprise packet of the year, perhaps. This guy is a gun! There is a lot to like about Bachar!

I was at the Gabba game last night and one of the most revealing aspects of actually watching the Tigers live was to see how important Houli is to the new set-up. When you're watching the whole ground, you can see how devastating his sweeping role across the backline is. He receives it, runs hard, and unloads a boomer. It seemed like half the Gabba got consumed by a single possession of his - that's what you call effective.

If it had gone the other way and we had lost someone for free that played really well at his new club can you imagine how big a deal it would be in the media and forums?

True. What's Tambling doing these days? Can't even get into a rabble crows team but havent heard anything about him.

Houli has been an awesome pickup, if we gave up our 3nd rounder it would of been a decent deal but PSD? Bargain.

Yeah, a half back who has a really penetrating kick is priceless. Leg speed is not the only way to move as ball quickly.

I still hate watching the Weagels each week and watching Hurn cut a swathe through opposition presses. Bloody Greg Miller.

He has been very good . To be fair to Hird he wanted him to stay as well and took him to that famous lunch to change his mind . From then on it was a Bomber stuff up .
He is playing the role Dan Connors played last year but is a bit more composed with the ball than Connors . I am a fan of Connors btw and would like to see him back in the team preferably a bit more forward as he can kick a goal . Seems the longest quad injury in history !!

What about Kareem ? Boston Celtics were my team in the 80s but I still loved the way Kareem played for the Lakers.

if you are a elite athlete or cannot observe ramadan for some reason , you can get permission from the head of the church to not having to obse ramadan , basher has been doing this all the time he was at the bombers and i am sure he wil do it for us now also

Houli did not play 1 game in Essendon seniors during Ramadan. In 2010 it ran from 10 August to 9 September and Houli played rounds 17 to 19 with 19 being on the 6th August. That was his last game (interesting to know if this is why Essendon didnt play him after Rd 19 and maybe contributed to his final decision to leave). 2009 it was from 21st August and he played last game on 8th August. Two previous years Bashar played, Ramadan was outside the footy season. I distinctly remembering a story that Basher did not want to seek permission not to obey Ramadan.
