The thing to remember people is that it's bloody winter - the days are very short. It's not like he has to go 16 hours without something to eat.

GoodOne said:Houli did not play 1 game in Essendon seniors during Ramadan. In 2010 it ran from 10 August to 9 September and Houli played rounds 17 to 19 with 19 being on the 6th August. That was his last game (interesting to know if this is why Essendon didnt play him after Rd 19 and maybe contributed to his final decision to leave). 2009 it was from 21st August and he played last game on 8th August. Two previous years Bashar played, Ramadan was outside the footy season. I distinctly remembering a story that Basher did not want to seek permission not to obey Ramadan.

Tiger74 said:to settle a few things on this.
1) Basher has not had an issue with fasting during season because either Ramadan was after the H&A or he was failing to get a game. He has however in the past obtained an exemption, so its wrong to say this is not something he will consider. This article pre draft camp covers this decision:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/afl/not-so-fast-when-footy-and-faith-collide/2006/10/04/1159641393272.html
2) Also while he hasn't had the conflict, the Dons were preparing for it in advance. As discussed in the below article, the intention was to slightly modify his program to minimize the distruption, and to follow the learnings obtained from Muslim professional athletes overseas.

Given he is devout, and has been looking into how to manage this for 4 years now, I think its safe to assume he has the info he needs, and our training staff are developing a program that gives both parties what they want.
He has shown a willingness to adjust his training times as required, and has stopped the fast (for the minimum time required) in the past, so IMO this is a massive non-issue.
EDIT - forgot to mention, discussion on the Blues forum, BF Essendon board, and the RL BF board (they were discussing because El Masri was in the same boat), all mentioned Houli had sought and gained permission to break the fast if Essendon made the finals.
Tiger74 said:He received an exemption for draft camp, and got one in case the dons made the finals. Refutes your claim that he has refused to break the fast at all.
As for this year, given he dealt with the issue previously, why do you think he won't now?

They were sticking the boots in early in the season. I think they'd rather Houli kicking from half-back over Stanton right about now. ;D

Gold Coast selections aside, he's arguably the recruit of the year.
