I wrote a long boring essay and posted it but have edited it back down.

Your comparison would make sense if Pell had admitted guilt, surrendered to police, resigned his position in Rome and sought professional help, and Tony Abbott had then said "Pell has done the wrong thing but I still support him as a friend".

None of those things has happened though, so your comparison is not even in the same vicinity.

Personally I see Bachar as a man of great character and this episode has not changed that for me. My respect for him from three weeks ago to now has grown, not diminished.

I don't think there's any video evidemce against pell is there?

And he's protested his innocence, is yet to go to court so has that presumption.

So shouldn't you be chuffed with the old Aussie values tony has shown in sticking up for a mate? Or is that respect only for the little guy?

Hypocrite much?

The problem with your analogy is that Pell should already be in jail for protecting pedophile priests IMO.

And Abbot is less standing up for a mate than fighting a culture war for a conservative institution that he has close tis with.

But yeah, if Pell confesses, resigns, apologises to his victims, and seeks professional help and Tony condemns his actions but still stands by his"friend" and visits him in prison, that would be a noble display of mateship.

But Tony will run a mile in the opposite direction if Pell is found guilty.

Just crap really. Bachars support wasn't conditional nor done after the tribunal/resignation. The platitudes for his mate ship flowed thick and fast. no different to tony.

Sure MD. If you think the a bloke hitting another bloke on a footy field and decades of systemic pedophilia and abuse covered up by the church are morally equivalents, that's your prerogative.

The debate was all over until MD picked it up again. But you are right, I should have just ignored him. It's impossible to win a political argument on PRE, no-one ever changes their opinion.

Come to think of it the football discussion is a bit like that too.
