You're right.

But as good and talented as they are, individuals come and go in footy clubs. The history of the club stays forever.

Maybe I'll view it differently if the pair of them end up lifting a cup. That's about the only scenario where I could look at those black marks of wooden spoons to the club's name in those years and feel it somewhat vindicated.

There are no guarantees.

I'll also note that before 2002, Carlton had never finished last in nearly 140 years of history at that time. To win five in the time since has hurt the brand, history and reputation of the club - and that cannot be erased.
Agree. All you see down the track in the record books are wooden spoons. And it is a blight on the club and its history. There are plenty of great players outside Pick #1.

Now it's looking more and more like Lynch is totally rooted yes I think we will win the spoon and I think we will win it next year too.

Who knows, it is possible. We will get a top 3 pick that is certain and I would expect us to get a good player with whichever of those picks we have.
What I don't want to see is tanking, I want to see our team try and win every game we play in.
North are looking better but seriously how could they not? Just through sheer weight of numbers of picks they would have to end up with some quality in their team, it is AFL socialism at work.
I believe we don't need 7-8 years of mediocrity. If we can get 2-3 quality youngsters through the doors we can build around them and no matter what anyone says we are still a great club to go to. We play at the MCG in front of big crowds.
I hate to use Carlton as an example but apart from the high draft picks they have built a team with money ball picks. Holland, Saad, Newman, Acres etc. We need to get active in this space.

No problem for me.
It will be a new dawn for the club.... a rebirth and restocking of the list...folllowed by a sustained push to the top again.
It has to be this way.
I look forward to the next Cotch Jack Alex and Dusty.

Weitering? pfft, he is probably the 3rd best player in that draft at best.
Agree. Schache and the barometer were the standouts

There is only one triple premiership player from that draft ....Dan Rioli

There is a message from that draft and also in our drafting of Jack. You can get great KPPs around 10-15 if you pick the right one !!

You forgot Nathan Broad.
As far as i can see there are 5 premiership players (so far) from that draft- Rioli, Broad, Oliver, Dunkley and Markov.

RE Weitering. Key defenders don't grow on trees and I guess it all comes back to what your club needs at that time, though. It's been mentioned in here by others.

Take for example the 07 draft. The Blues didn't pass on Cotchin through stupidity - they'd just welcomed Judd, and had Murphy, Gibbs et al developing. We didn't need another midfielder. Then look at our ruck division back then - Cain Ackland, Cameron Cloke, Setanta O'Hailpin ... we were always taking the top ruck prospect in that draft, whether he was the best kid in it or not.

Tom Lynch has one year to go on his contract I think the end of 2025 we will be in a position to trade heavily.

Would not delve too deeply into that draft if i were you.

There was about 10 highly touted talls in the top 15.
We traded out of 8 for pick 13 to get Polak. They knew a tall would be availble at 13 but had no idea who.

After the dust settled and pick 13 came along there was two choices left Jack or Sellars.
The way we went about things i reckon we just tossed a coin and hoped for the best. lucky for us it ended up with Jack.

Call me cynical.

A few of us got briefed about 2 weeks before that draft. Greg Miller, Francis Jackson and Hayden Hill briefing about 30 Captains Club/Titus Ton Up Coterie members. They ranked about 6 group of players. I left that night fully understanding that we were taking Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards. The only other option they would consider as a tall was Ben Reid but they felt he would be too mature/advanced for where we were at list wise..

There's a thread somewhere in the archives that reveals this about a month after said draft. Jackson would have taken Jack at 8 and was not happy with Greg over the trade for Polak.

I had the feeling Frank loved Jack, but thought Brown and Frawley was a chance too if he made it to us (Frank was worried Jack would be gone by then). I'd forgotten all about Sellers....
They liked Selwood too, but thought he would be gone. They also thought he'd spend his whole career in an altered training regime. They also rated Everitt's skills but thought he was a potential know who was coached what to say but his brother. Eg when asked his weakness, he answered kicking, which was one of his strengths.

Phantom did good pushing to get those things organised.
