Apparently the FBI investigated the shooter re IS links and found nothing.
His ex wife says he had mental issues.
FWIW I think it's too early to know for sure.

He's a nutty lone wolf, but apparently had expressed ideological approval of ISIS. As you say we should probably wait til all the facts are in though.

It was an act of Islamic terrorism and has been claimed as such. If anything, the media are too scared to call it as it is.

My arse. It an act of hate not an act of terrorism. The shooter was a wannabe cop FFS. Both Turnbull and Shorten used the T word in the media this morning which really annoyed me. Turnbull even used the word 'freedom' about 20-30 times... which I found quite ironic considering the lack of equality gays get in this country.

So if he makes a call to emergency services before the incident and swears allegiance to ISIS, it's got nothing to do with terrorism? Riiiiiiiiiight.....

Why are people of a certain minority demographic prepared to commit mass murder at the drop of a hat? Is the question that jumps up and down to be asked.

No wonder Trump is so popular.

There's nutcases everywhere no matter what religion they follow. Have we all of a sudden forgotten about the 22 year old girl shot by a loony fan of hers while signing autographs? I just laugh at US media.

Even more laughable to the sheepheads who think that dill Trump would fix terrorism by banning Muslim immigration.

Yeah, there are two problems here, foolish to focus entirely on one. But Americans will fight to the death for their right to own guns. That's a localised issue.

Step aside, sir. Make way for the Donald. Donald comin' through.

Poor old GOP. A really good chance to knock off a weak, compromised Hillary and they go and nominate the guy who alienates all the key and growing demographics.

The Dems are laughing all the way to November.

He'll win because he projects as a strong leader in an age of ditherers. Someone has to wake up to the Trojan horse.

Say what you want about Muslims, but they stick to their principles like glue. And that's how they'll bring us down.

Sure he does, if you are white, over 50 and disaffected. Most others realise that just saying the first reactionary thing that pops into your orange combovered head is not actually leadership.

Say what you want about Muslims, but they stick to their principles like glue. And that's how they'll bring us down.

Truly, the Caliphate is upon us.

You need to look beyond an ISIS caliphate.

Sure. We'll have Drumpf as President of the Free World and mini-caliphates everywhere. I live in Newport so I'm growing my beard and wearing white robes just so I'll fit in OK

Doesn't jump up and down from where I stand. I'm no expert on US shooting massacres, but my impression is no race, religion or age group has a mortgage on them. One gender dominates, but apart from that, seems like a pretty diverse bunch of psychologically ill or unstable people prepared to commit mass murder at the drop of a hat.

Don't know enough about this one, but seems the same. He might have ranted about Isis to make himself feel justified somehow, and they would, of course, welcome the free publicity, but I dunno.

Like glue? We are currently in an age when the religion is as ununified as it has ever been.

I detest pretty much all religious ideology but Islam particularly. It has always puzzled me why, notably the left, are so defensive of a religion that is so oppressive to women, gays and other minorities.

Agree on the all religious ideology part, but the leap to Islam isn't logical. Its about education and economics. Christianity can, and has, been spun to be just as crazy by fundamentalist big men to disaffected audiences.

But again, I don't think this massacre has much to do with Islam. Just another unhinged hate filled person with a gun.

Me too. I can't accept minority groups being subservient. Nobody should be opressed and I can't respect anyone who expects it.

Great posting.

RIP to all those victims. Such a waste.

Yep. Loony saw 2 men kissing and was enraged.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

Its scary how unaffected Americans have become to this sort of stuff. If this happened in Australia (either one of the shootings over the weekend) the outrage would have been out of the stratosphere.

I grew up in the UK and the more of these shootings that occur in America the more it reminds of when the wars began in Afghanistan and Iraq. Initially every time a soldier was killed, it was the first news story on every channel, it was on every front page. As the war continued on the news stories of soldiers slowly kept creeping further back into the news programmes and the newspapers and people seemed to become desensitised to the death that was occurring. The US is going through this now. These killings will (as with all the others) have no effect on a country drunk on guns and with a psyche that is ingrained from a young age that gun culture is fine.

I was reading comments earlier on facebook related to the Cristina Grimmie killing, an American claimed that banning guns would have no affect on murdering people as they would find other ways to do so. When challenged on what isn't occurring in other western countries he said that they would kill people with incendiary devices, yes incendiary devices. For all of the ludicrous things I had thought I had heard about gun culture in the US this is clearly the craziest. I mean how do we live in our great country with gun laws whilst all these bombs are going off murdering people we want to murder!!

What they don't seem to grasp is that guns do not provide an opportunity to rethink what you want to do. Someone posted a few pages back of a shooting in a cinema over something so small. If that was Australia, words would have been said, popcorn would have been thrown and both parties would likely just sit down and watch the movie but the US end up with a dead body.

There is evidence that shooting a gun desensitises even the person shooting it. That person if they so wished would find it harder to murder someone with a knife or through sheer physical strength as its far more personal.

The US is a great country in a lot of ways, but a seriously scary country in other ways.
