AFLW Brisbane v Richmond Qualifying Final 5 November 2022

Lions a bit better across the park today. Clearances in the 2nd Q killed us.
Umps assisted their momentum at times.
But we weren't far off it. We had the fumbles.
Take a few more marks and get some linking handballs going and things will look better ..
Last Q was good
Not quite ready to take on the best, consistently, but the structure is forming. Defence is strong, midfield is competitive, star power is starting to emerge. They need to add a couple more pieces in the off-season but this experience will be very valuable.

One of those tall Brisbane forwards would have been handy.

Yeah the 2nd quarter killed us today. Take that 1 quarter away and we were more than competitive for the rest of the game against probably the best team in the comp.

Amazing year to finish up playing in finals. Lots to like, hope they can kept it up. Got beaten badly on the outside. Brisbane well drilled to hit the contest at pace and to run in support. We were scrambling at the contest (which often works) but the support was hanging back flat-footed, just hoping to get it to Conti or Mackenzie. But it didn't work because if it did pop out we we're standing still and Brisbane we're on the move. Hence the pressure and their ability to gain territory. Need to work on the kick-in strategy. Just kept bombing it long which was one of the reasons they were able to keep the pressure on us. Their tall timber were happy to pick those off and their mids were hitting the fall of the ball at pace and pumping it back in. Needed to change it up and present short options and run it out.

Reid is coming along. Getting more involved and makes good decisions. Would love to see her keep improving next year.

Mackenzie is learning that she doesn't have the pace to burn defenders at this level, still needs to be smarter with the footy. She's got great skills, but doesn't do enough with them.

Sheerin is underutilised. She has a massive boot and looks a natural player, but a bit like Balta, our forwards get caught under the ball. Play her up the field a bit and instruct the forwards to double back and we should get some easy goals running with the flight.

Yazir loves to go in hard but I'm not seeing a lot of opportunities flowing from her play. We should be getting crumbing goals from her.

Brennan is such a natural footballer. Reads it well, great goal sense.

Graham is another find. Composed, and a very good field kick.

Ditto Shevlin.

I'm hoping D'Arcy gets back next year. Many will probably disagree but I think she's another natural player. Not great pace or height but just a good player.

Agree with most of that. Reid had one touch today though and she is very poor overhead. I thought D'Arcy simply couldn't get a game.

Yassir is coming as long pretty well I reckon.

Beaten in the midfield today but Brissie are very strong.

I think we need a few more that can clunk it. Even the smaller Melboure and Brisbane players can.

Our forward line is the concern. Wakefield may have to sadly retire but there aren't any putting their hand up.

Our backline has been great - thought we'd struggle with Cordner missing. She'll be back as will our first pick from last year's draft who is recovering from a knee.

Siad it heaps of times but Sheerin has to be recruit of the year. Boggles the mind that she couldn't get a game at GWS. Good read here if you have access.

Twitter suggesting our game next week will be at Ikon Park as Punt Road doesn't hold enough.

Outplayed by a more polished and skilled team. A well deserved win by Brisbane. Tigers will have to improve considerably next week.

What wasn’t deserved was the pathetic attempt at umpiring. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe that level of ineptitude. The small umpire hasn’t a clue. Seriously mate Auskick is beyond your capacity. The laws of boundary umpiring would also be a stretch for your skill set.

If that is the best the AFL can find for finals football then you might as well employ moonlighting rugby league refs.

Beaten by a better team & yes some very questionable umpiring.

Thought Sheerin was easily our best. She's a great player. Always looking to take the game on.
Can she transition to the midfield? Worth a crack.

Bit disappointed by Egan & McKenzie after being so good in recent weeks. Seymour smashed in the ruck.
Conti tried hard but was well watched. The Lions midfield dominated inside & out.
Our defence did extremely well considering the way the ball was coming in.

Our effort was there for most of the match but the Lions completely broke down our running game whilst they had their own game purring.

That said it was very pleasing to run out the game. Needed to heading into next week.

The girls have taken a big step forward this year though no doubt.

Yes, my understanding of the advantage rule was not correct but is it fair when everyone has stopped and a different player has the ball? Rules should have a sense of fairness and this one doesn't imo.

I don't like the way the advantage rule works either, always thought it would be better if the whistle wasn't blown, but it isn't new, our defenders were caught napping.

The umpires and the rules are an easy target sometimes instead of calling out our own mistakes. The 50 metre penalty was a good example. Footballers have been making sure they throw the ball to the right person for at least 30 years and yet somehow we are hard done by there as well.

Umpires though also need to understand players are huamn. Sheerin was tackled from behind, she may not have known who tackled her. When Conway is asking for the ball (and you want to get back into your defensive position) you will give the ball to the person calling for it, that she called for it and then didn't bother to take it (to make it even more obvious to the umps) should surely have removed any opportunity for the 50. We simply cannot have rules that "reward" that sort of gamesmanship.

If the rule doesn’t exist though you need to follow the ones that exist and lobby separately to have them changed. You can’t just play to what you wish the rules were then complain when you get penalised.

The player has to return it quickly and also to the right person.

I agree with you that if the wrong player on the opposition games for it then that shouldn’t be 50. It should actually be reportable because it the same thing as staying for a free kick IMO. But right now it is 50.

If the wrong player asks for the ball to deliberately deceive the player attempting to return the ball, then the free should be overturned. That would stop this idiocy.

It was a pi55 weak piece of umpiring, nothing more nothing less.

If you don't know who tackled you that is even more reason to hold the ball until you do. I reckon the first instance of a 50 coming from another player calling for the ball was when Nick Riewoldt was playing so there's plenty of warning to be careful.

On top of that, the position the ball was in means the best play is to go slow, hold the ball and double check before you throw it so you give the defence the most time possible to get back.

Whichever way you slice it, it was silly footy.

But why is Conway asking for the ball if not to deceive?

Overturn the free.

DS

Exactly. The AFL brings the word "common sense" in when it suits them. This is the most obvious use of common sense to use in the game. Players trying to deceive to gain an advantage (50m), should result in the infringement for said 50 to be ignored. The common sense argument.

Scheduling our next game at Punt Road, and while the Matildas is typically absurd fixturing from the AFL

Then you are expecting umpires to listen to everything the players say to each other, watch all their body movements and determine if they were trying to deceive or not. Hugely unfair to ask them to interpret all of that instead of just judging the action.

How about the player with the ball in their hands takes responsibility for giving it to the right person by checking with the umpire, like they have for the past 30 years?

It's pretty simple really, and I'm not sure it should be a shocking revelation to any player that their opponent does not have their best interests at heart.

There are two different points here To the 50m. They aren’t mutually exclusive. I agree with both.

1. Our player should be smarter in the situation. It was just dumb esp. in AFLW where one goal could be 25%-40% of your score for a match.
2. The rules should be changed to somehow penalise (blatant) staging / misdirection for free kicks & 50m

Related one - if you have the ball and feign a hand-pass to draw 50m how do we feel about that?

How does the umpire know that you were feigning or not. What if you thought you had an option then quickly realised it was closed off. And on the same vein as this, sometimes a player might think a free kick is theirs when it isn’t and ask for the ball.

So 2 would introduce a new type of grey where you have to work out the likely stagers intentions.

Last time I checked, that was called a 50 also.
