AFL Player Dies in Las Vegas

Or why.
I kinda get it though as I've been drunk/wasted (which I absolutely discourage and regret) in town at times and the little devil inside has encouraged me to get in situations I might not of otherwise entertained sober/straight.

If that exit door wasn't locked due to negligence, then the Flamingo Hotel could be in a lawsuit from McCarthy's family.

Sounds like it was just a series of small errors of judgement along the way which culminated in a fatal error of judgement with nothing really too untoward.

What an absolute waste of a young life.

Absolutely no doubt. And I'm sure that if that's the case that Flamingo Hotel will be liable to some degree.
But I've got to ask why John was there in the first place, didn't choose to stay put and ring someone for help, or if he didn't have access to his mobile phone, scream down to the street for help.

This.

Dont read too much into it. We've all done very stupid things on the gas, most of the time you get away with it. On this occasion the single events all added together to create a tragedy.

Ultimately it doesnt matter how it happened, the result is the same unfortunately. :(

Sums it up well Baloo. If he somehow makes it down that tree they all go back the next day and laugh at how stupid and lucky he was. Now his teammates are left with some guilt (they are in no way responsible IMO) as to what they could have done differently. Awful time and so very sad for JM.

this.

it seems like a lot of people are trying to draw scandalous conclusions to something when there is no real evidence (yet). so what if drugs were widely available in the club they went to? access to drugs in nightclubs is common in most western country cities. it doesn't mean he accepted them... and its less likely he would accepted them given the AFL's (stupid) policy.

I wasn't saying drugs.
Ian4 obviously on them hehe.
;D
I was saying something else.

Starts with D and ends with T.

Not suggesting he took them but they don't test players for 6 weeks after the end of season unless I am mistaken.

didn't this drug policy originally start with off-season testing? and besides, if they're gonna have an illicit drug policy, wouldn't the off-season be the most likely time a player would indulge? would defeat the purpose of having a policy in the first place if they didn't test players now.

Does anyone really think they should be drug tested in there 6 weeks off?

I certainly don't. Hopefully soon I will be working for a big mining company. I accept than I can and will be drug tested at any time during work, but when I'm on annual leave? I would hope not.

Spot on and so is Baloo.

The large portion of young blokes can look back and say "What was I thinking?" about some things stupid they did on the gas.

I think most people on here have summed it up pretty well. I look at the photos and the jump and think "What was he thinking?" knowing what happened. Then I think back to some of the stupid situations I've got myself into and some of the stupid things myself and others I know have done when we've been out on the *smile*. They don't seem as silly but that's just because we've been lucky. The reality is if things had gone wrong we would've had just as much trouble explaining what was going through the person's head.

I don't believe that he was just drunk. From the little info so far it sounds like he had some kind of a panic type reaction. Not something that is normally related to drink. Sounds more like a combination of substances to me.

What part sounds like a panic attack ?

Got separated from his mates because he was too pissed (classic drunk move)
Wandered around aimlessly trying to find a) his hotel or b) a place that would let him in (classic drunk move)
Started getting depressed because he couldnt find either of the above (classic drunk move)
He called his girl in the middle of the night (classic drunk move)
Told her he missed her and wanted to be with her (classic drunk move)
Found himself somewhere he shouldn't be because he opened a wrong door (classic drunk move)
Got himself locked out (classic druk move)
Thought jumping onto a nearby palm tree and then shimmying down was the best option (classic drunk move)

When the first reports came out I did think drugs, either directly or a via psychotic episode wold have had somehthing to do with it. But as the reports have come out it looks more and more likely to me that he just drunk and made one too many alcohol induced wrong decisions.

Bar the palm tree from a 3rd stores bit, I've done what JMac seems to have done many times while solely drunk. I still have scars to prove it too.

If he'd made it down the tree, he'd be telling his story for years to come and all his mates would be pissing themselves.

It simply didn't go to plan. These things happen all the time; we just don't hear about them.
