Training Today Friday:

Lynch:
Started off at 9:30am sharp and jogged 2 laps then did about 50 minutes of run-throughs and the like, a few bystanders welcomed him back including myself. All in all a very pleasing sight as we hit the New Year.
Shorty: Also in rehab but there didn't look to be too much wrong with him, when I asked him how come he was taking it easy he just joked, "old age" and then enthusiastically said to us "it is great to see Lynch back" and nodded towards him.
DRioli: I had mentioned pre-christmas that Rioli had hardly been spotted, today I think he completed the 2km time trial but didn't notice that he did any of the drills, the only other time I spotted him was doing some very low impact laps maybe even a bit proppy?, (i am still wondering if he had any undisclosed ankle surgery in the off-season?).
Ross: Still in rehab, it was always going to be a slow recovery from his toe op but I don't know whether all is going to plan or slower than expected?
Trezise, Grimes, McCauliffe, Coulthard, Hayes-Brown, Miller: Did not train, only Grimes was spotted.
Gibcus: Trained 100% :clap2
Tylar Young: Potentially completely out of rehab now? although there was minimal contact today.
Juddy: After the time trial he spent a fair bit of time wrestling the grappling coach to strengthen the shoulder he had surgery on.
Dusty: A bit more reserved today, gave us a little bit of concern when he came over to rehab and pointed towards the back of his ankle but thankfully promptly rejoined the group.

Yes training started with the 2km time trial in 2 groups, basically talls then the rest, I take less notice of time trials these days, the usual people win them and the usual suspects lag.

For those interested the talls was won by Broad then Gibcus and Mate`.
The 2nd group Seth Campbell led for all but the last lap where Tarranto gobbled him up and spat him out and a few others overtook him as well.

Structure:

Balta
: Still stationed forward
Bauer: I think it looked like he was playing some sort of high back role? @The Mole (who was also there), may be able to confirm or deny this?
Bakes: Around the mids.

Standouts:
Don't know why I created this headline category as there probably wasn't really one but Cumberland certainly caught my eye a couple of times with his blistering pace and evasiveness and taking on the defenders.
Meatball: Dare I say it as it is fraught with danger but he is in the best condition I have seen in a very long time.

No match play or the like so i don't have much more to add, i am sure @The Mole will contribute something when he get's around to it.

PS. EDDIE JNR  , Channel 9 was watching for the whole 2 hour session so you might need to tune in for an experts report ;)

Cheers
much appreciated ceasar. question, last year it always felt there was a negative slant on pre season reports, and the season panned out accordingly.

based on what you are seeing this pre season so far, are you optimistic about the season ahead, or not?

I'm a realist not an optimist in the real world, in footy pretty much the same.

First week back after Christmas so really too early to tell.

I'm optimistic about Sonsie and Cumberland.
I am hoping on Lynch not banking on him to be ok.
Hopper is completing all sessions which was a big improvement on last year.
Gibcus tracking well so should be a plus but in his first year in defence he did leak a few goals so how will that equate this year.
Who will be Lynch's Robin, Balta or Kossi, (not sold on Kossi yet so I would rob Peter to pay Paul and go with Balta who has been training fwd anyway).
I am super pessimistic on Grimes.
I am optimistic on Brown.
Trezise and Young surely get better after their first years.

Anyway I am starting to ramble and not answering your question, i think we will be better and everything i hear is that the players are happy and enthusiastic about the year ahead , but I also think some other teams will be a lot better.

I have not been able to identify Schofield, (there was one player hitting up hard from the forward line but I don't know if Fawcett is back training or if it was Schofield?), there was only one yesterday so if it was Fawcett either Schofield didn't train or may not have been invited back post Christmas?)
Mykelti Lefau was there yesterday and looks unbelievably fit and did pretty well in the 2km time trial for a such big unit.
Lefau only made his return to footy in June last year after doing his ACL in May 2022 so a full pre-season will give him his best chance.
Had some eye catching moments of power through the middle in the VFL late last year, (hasn't been a big ball winner and not sure of his game sense coming from a rugby background).

Having said that his last 4 games in VFL produced 64 disposals and 39 tackles o_O .

Spent 3 years at Casey Demons before being let go so what did they not see?

I am keen to see how he goes when they do some match sim.

I'll keep an eye out to see if Schofield is in fact still training.
Lefau, I dare say would be viewed as a big bodied small forward , play in f50 to apply the heat with his 10 tackles a game . I worry that he hasnt the ability to step up to afl , I could be wrong . Scho appears similar size to Bauer . Love to see how he goes in match sim

195cm nothing small about it unless you think he plays that way.
