2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

I remember Jack Reiwoldt said once, they tried to avoid Jacob Townsend in the tackling drills, I reckon this bloke would be worse.
Was amazing watching & listening to Towner tackle blokes at VFL games. The poor blokes he hit stayed hit.

1 game at Punt Rd the ump felt sorry for Towners victim & paid a free against him for tackling too hard

There is one given about pre season that is repeated every year which is that far too much will be read into practice matches.
This year will be no different.
I gave up watching it because apart from some of the established players I couldn’t pick up who was who.

To a certain extent agreed, although anyone who saw our match against melbourne at Casey last year knew we were WAYYYY off the pace. You dont look for too much mainly seeing how structures hold up against oppos, skill errors dont matter too much either. But i recall last year watching us not being able to get out the back of melbourne even once, whereas they constantly had 4-5-6 free players streaming through the guts without a tiger in sight. It was at that point I knew we *smile* up. :)

Good point thats why I’m keen to see how we stack up v oppo , I detected some subtle changes in limited view I saw , let’s see how we go

Yeah I only watched the highlights and the 1st q of the replay but there's some noticeable changes in centre square set up. release player etc. Also a continuing but enhanced (on last year) focus on the forward handball. But we all see what we want to see.

I was at the ground and had one general observation - who can take an overhead mark? Balta, Kozi, Gibcus, Young, Mate, Miller, Ryan doubt any took a single overhead mark. Nank had one late in the backline. Was a strength in our glory years seems Bauer is a one off.
Where was knoble Naismith??
We must not like drafting kids that can marl above there heads
Besides Richo and Jack we have gone through 300 talls all hopless at marking.

I thought when they could, the red team moved the ball more convincingly than the yellow team. I think their approach was more in line with the way Yze proposed we would play. Established players will take longer to reprogram or I'm also seeing things?

Fair. The collective output of this group will determine how hard our dip is.

Let's do under or overs of the combined group.

  • Pick 9: Josh Gibcus.
  • Pick 17: Tom Brown.
  • Pick 28: Tyler Sonsie.
  • Pick 29: Sam Banks.
  • Pick 30: Judson Clarke.
I'm setting the market at 74.5 combined games played in 2024. Do you take the under or the over?

Massive overs. Very generous line.

Take the unders with all Leysy can.

Steely might be our Jamie Elliott in forward line (without?) the leaps.
In all seriousness Steely (who looked stronger) did well with his opportunist goals. As did Mansell.

Whilst they did well I was hoping to see a bit more from Seth Campbell than those two though as more likely to be a specialist forward.

An intra-club scratch match isn't much of a marker. We'll see more in the practice games to get a better idea.

Good news about Steely who has consistently been in the front pack in the running drills and longer runs.
Interesting.

In 1 qtr against Melbourne 2018 or 19
He dislocated 3 legs, snapped a Melbourne player in half and kod one.
He is the best (hurt/pain) tackler I've seen in 40 years.
I thought Peter Wilson and Scotty Turner were good tacklers Towner has them covered.

That was the game where he buried Nathan Jones in the turf at the City end Zips if I recall. They are still trying to repair the human shaped hole

Steely Green played a bit of vfl in 2023 but we didn't see Smith or Campbell much at all. They are essentially like new recruits.

We have a lot of young players now. Whether they are any good is yet to be determined but to me it is the most interesting facet of 2024 that I will be looking at.

Didn't Towner get reported for that tackle only for it to be withdrawn before it got to the tribunal, (probably got withdrawn that night it was so ridiculous).

The young player we could really do with coming on is Kaleb Smith. We have a significant problem where pace and carry through the midfield, and spread from stoppages is concerned. Even if we can just get 1 or 2 senior games into him this year, that’d be good. I’d even take a solid body of work in the VFL eg 15 games or so. Hopefully he’s continuing to recover from his foot injury.
