2024 Richmond Coach

The thing is that with Kingsley and Fly is that they are fresh voices to their respective teams, would they have the same results had they coached the Tiges?

I like mini but I also like the idea of a fresh voice
Interesting take, Racetrack.

I do not how good Mini is or can be.
Trying to think differently (if we are to believe the Sage that is 50 out whereby decision has already been made).

I am thinking it's no so much the voice (no. not THAT Voice!) but the message.

Case in point. Beavis.

Wasn't the same guy coaching prior to 2017?
Suddenly had an epiphany post Syd A Knee having a 20 Goal picnic.
Redefined himself. Open. Lovey Dovey etc.
Different style of play.
Players didn't need a new voice.

Get the feeling Mini could be similar.
How did we expect him to coach in a "caretaker" capacity?
Sure he changed up a few things.
Poker Player. Don't show your hand too early.

If Mini (oops sorry 50 out) when Mini is anointed as Head Honcho I can see him changing up many things.
Pretty sure he knows what worked for Beavis won't work for him.
He may keep parts that do work.
He will put his own imprimatur on Punt Rd.

It's the message, not the voice.

(It's the feel, It's the vibe, Cheerio Dennis!)

I caught the end of a conversation on SEN Thursday night where they said that Newman is well liked and respected by the powers that be at Richmond. They said we encouraged him to do a comprehensive apprenticeship at another club/s with a view to one day coming back to coach us.

They said this doesn’t mean Newmans got the job only pointing out that Newman has been on Richmond’s coaching radar since before his retirement and has done everything the club asked him to.

Is it enough? time will tell.

Short listed coaches

Xavier Clarke
Andrew McQualter
Adam Yze
Chris Newman

Essendon's form tailing off towards the end of the season has gone against Giansiracusa.

No front runner. It's an open race.

"Whisper" that Livingstone and Hartley are keen to continue the program with list and football set-up decisions already made rather than a coach coming in and making big changes. Says other people are running Richmond rather than the coach.

The latest on Richmond coaching candidate who was sounded out by finals clubs

Seb Mottram
SEN
2 September 2023

Xavier Clarke will next week front the biggest job interview of his life as he meets with the panel that will select Richmond’s next coach, his brother has revealed.

The Tigers assistant coach was shortlisted for the role last month and is understood to be among the candidates remaining to replace Damien Hardwick.

Clarke, 39, has experience coaching his own side in the NEAFL and has coached a premiership up north before moving to Richmond.

He ticks all the boxes Richmond are looking for – as do a number of applicants – and Raph Clarke disclosed details of his brother’s push to be the Tigers' next senior coach.

“There’s not too much inside gossip… Xavier doesn’t give much away,” Clarke began on SEN’s Fridays in the Top End.

“But I think he’s got his final interview on Monday or Tuesday. Trying to talk to Xavier when he’s coming home for holidays and he’s got to plan his 40th at the end of the month, he’s like, ‘I haven’t thought about anything else besides this interview’.

“He’s quite lucky he’s had the time at Richmond. All the family are very excited, it’d be amazing if he does get the job.

“His coaching philosophy and style is pretty similar to Adam Kingsley and the likes of that.”

Clarke has been at the Tigers since the end of 2016, starting as the development coach and also transitioning into the VFL role.

He’s now in charge of the forwards.

Raph added that his brother is so highly rated within the industry that two coaches – whose sides are now in the finals – tried to poach Xavier out of Punt Road.

“Kingsley tried to take him up to GWS when he got the job, Ross Lyon offered him a gig at St Kilda at the start of this season as well, so he’s a wanted man in footy circles as well,” he explained.

“Whether Richmond believe that he’s the next guy to take them to finals and be successful again… (I don’t know).”

He added: “After (seven) seasons in the gig to be a wanted man at the top, it’s a big credit to him and his development as coach.”

The new coach can come from Mars as far as I’m concerned.

I’d much rather the club pick the best candidate than trying to make some sort of statement.

For what it’s worth I trust the club to do exactly that and if Clarke is the best choice then he’d get the job. But it would be because he’s the best option and not because of his heritage.
Agree completely Coops, just thinkin out loud on the possible scenario's. Got no idea who or how many potential candidates the club spoke to about applying for the coaching job initially. Down to the last few serious candidates Mini, Newy, X, Yze so I'm guesstimating that there's probably not a hell of a lot of difference to choose from between the final few. There might be a 1000 ways to cook sausages n most coaches would probably know all the recipes, but in the end their still bloody sausages after all.

Last thing you want is the coach running the footy club. Coaches are generally on fairly short term contracts and very heavily performance based. Way to easy for a coach to dabble in too many areas for the immediate rather than the long term future.

As this goes on I feel worse and worse about it

We had two gun assistants at the club in Fly and Kingsley, and they have both new senior jobs, and we are left with the off cuts to choose from, or at the very least, no one as good as them.

If this Hardwick thing was half expected, we should have done what Port have done with Joss Carr, and somehow kept them around, to see how this plays out

Very concerned we have missed a big opportunity here.

If we want the next Dimma, the qualifications AFAIK are the following

Play in a flag
Be a senior assistant coach for a flag team

Don't see anyone around that fits the criteria , Fly and Kingsley did fit the criteria, so did Carr.

Is the whole play in a flag thing necessary? How many flags did Clarkson play in?

Just my preference

Hardwick, Chris Scott, Goodwin, Simpson, Longmire, all premiership players
Most have, but the most successful coach of the recent era didn’t. Roos never played in a flag, either. It’s more important, I feel, that they have a good mentor and work in a good system. The only anomaly in the above list is Scott, but he did play under Matthews. McQualter’s got that sort of background, but it concerns me that he’s never been in any system as a coach than ours, and he’s never coached his own team, other than the interim period. Newman is my preference, because I think he ticks all of the boxes we’re looking for from the available applicants. I also don’t think we’ll get a flag from the next coach. It’ll be 2 or even 3 down the track.

Losing Kingsley was the big one. Had Hardwick pulled the pin at the end of last year I have no doubt Kingsley would have taken over.

For me know it’s not just about the coach. It’s whom the coach will be surrounded by.

That’s a critical aspect that can’t be lost Acrs.

Would love to have Newy back at the club, I hope his presentation is better than the other prospective coaches.

Mini is a safe pair of hands. for a 3 year rebuild he may be ok. well at least as good as the others.

I'm bemused that people downrate Mini's experience in coaching the RFC.
The next coach must have coached his own team"
"Mini hasnt been a senior coach, apart from the last 12 games"

I would think looking after a senior afl team, with the media requirements, public spotlight, final say in the MC and the box and overall pressure to be a harder challenge than the box hill hawks.

*not suggesting Mini is the pick. I havent interviewed them so I dont know. I'll trust the club and the process

My concern is that he’ll do everything possible to delay the rebuild, because it won’t win games now. As I said earlier I get string Wallace vibes. He coached for the now. Hardwick early was prepared to take the hit if it prepared the club for the future. He lost his way a bit after the 3 finals losses, but we brought in some outside advisers to help him correct.

I would imagine the coaching selection panel would be all over that aspect of all of the applicants & would steer clear of a candidate who showed that sort of mentality. Plus the footy department ( Hartley & Livingstone in particular) would also be all over it.
