2024 Draft Thread

i have an uneasy caution for Sam Lalor as pick 1.
Having followed the Tigers for 60+ years, we have only had one Dustin Martin . ( don't argues et al).
To me the odds of replacing said Dustin Martin, within one season of him retiring, with a like for like seems an incredibly long shot.
I know nothing about Sam and hope he's a star, but for me lightning really would have to strike twice.

Yes i remember when Royce retired. Alan Edwards was the next Royce had talent too. Did his knee and was never the same.
Rarely if ever are Legends replaced.

As you rightly suggest this is a draft for mids & smalls, 10 & 11 surely goes that way. But I daresay the case for Tauru at 6 becomes much stronger under such circumstances, taking the best key position prospect along with 3 smalls means we only really need a Whitlock to meet our tall requirements for this draft. One doesn't have to fall for Faull if they think there are better opportunities elsewhere. That might also open the door for a tilt at Dodson as well, I think now would be a good time to get an apprentice ruckman.
Sorry I haven't got back to you on Draper yet, Bully. I've got one more SANFL game to watch.

On J Whitlock or a Faull. Maybe we cop one. Not both. That looks like it might be the plan.

No way I'd spend a pick in Dodson's range on a ruck in this draft. But you kinda got Grundy right. Sure, I still hate him but maybe you're just as right about Dodson. It's closer than we think. Your eye is good. It is not the eye of the potato. I'm off Dodson.

Dodson. Agree about not picking rucks in the first two rounds... and yet a ruck that stays busy is like the last Tim-tam on the plate, compelling viewing. We want a tall or two and most of them seem to be ruck height nowadays (well taller than Nank anyway). Let's just pick the ones that will take the most marks and stay involved in the game. Dodson has at least half of that equation locked up.
I love seeing an opposition's ruckman get lots of possessions for them... it means we'll win it back easier :p

And rucks don't run, so fundamentally they're more of a liability after a turnover, since they can't run to defend our fast rebound kicks. I'm happy for the opposition to get fat on tim tams lol

This might sound harsh, but let the feeder clubs develop 18yo rucks. We can throw a junk pick at a mature one in 5 years. In 5 years, the 23yo beanpole from this draft won't be any better than the guy we can trade for. We'll know what we're getting, pay less, and have an extra first rounder on our list with 5 years of development ready to enter his prime for finals... am I wrong? lol sorry to any ruckmen reading this

Now is a good time to play the feeder club, no pressure for finals so we can be patient. I think with Nank on his last legs and Ryan still not established it might pay to get another ruck in the pipeline. Dodson will hold his value and I also think we need to be realistic about our destination club credentials. It says something that Geelong are trading up for Dodson, they see him as a replacement for Conway. There's merit to having some depth in this area.

This draft is so good because it has everything. Mids? Check. Tall forwards? Check. Tall backs, small backs, small forwards, flankers of all persuasions? Wingers? Rucks? Checkity-check-check.

*Yeah but every draft has everything.*

Yeah but in this draft they're viable.

The talls might not be champions but you don't have to squint to see a dozen likely B-graders. B-grade talls are gold. We only had 3 A-grade talls in our recent dynasty and Rance *smile* off after one flag.

I think Jack's right. We can grab some elite small forwards and get our B-grade talls later. Don't take JWhit at 11, take Faull at 18 or MWhit at 20. And Sims at 23. Take Berry and Hotton at 10 and 11, and Alger later.

Two top-shelf bull mids: Lalor and Smillie
Three elite small forwards: Berry, Hotton, Alger
Two B-grade talls: Faull, Sims.

All that's missing is the nimble inside-out genius runner FOS.

We can get flankers next year. Besides, we already have them.

Ruck? Rookie that 210 Carlton Mirkov fella - Jack again. Rookie 24-year-old rucks, don't draft 18-year-old ones.

I think MWhit and Sims will be like those Griffiths, Vickery type selections.
A twinkle in the eye every now and then, rarely a game where they live up to the hope. I'm projecting them as future list cloggers. Would rather we just play Taps if we're gonna go speculative.

We should take one of Gough, Colt Seavers or Shining Hands before we get crumbs. We'll get flankers in another draft.

I totally cred the Wells wants Dodson rumour, Bully. And I reckon you're on it.

Over the years we've seen the cost of rucks increase. And their value hold. Rucks are the Corollas of the AFL market. You get your money back if you sell smart.

The price is going up but so are the refunds. Wells buys Dodson then sells Conway at a profit. (Rucks are better than Corollas. Who knew?)

Should we trade 2024#24 for 2025R1sayESS? Or buy Dodson and sell that stock at a profit? Or retain the stock? Now we're trading.

Arbitraging rucks. Is Wells smart? He used to be.

We cant do everything.
Henry Ford did but these days the specialties are outsourced.
We can be a feedr club. But in 4 years time we should be a destination.
A destination with momentum.
Just like the hawks are now.

Lets use that spot to find a gem.

DLTD was criminally underrated

I don't know who Colt Seavers is but Shanahan's a dud. Not even a tall.

Ah, Seavers is the Faull Guy. Yeah, I said get him.

Dave was underrated, but 100% a B-grader.
An 18yo midfielder performing at SANFL/WAFL/VFL level is exposed form and a good sign they can adapt.

But an 18yo kid kicking goals at VFL level....He's a dud?

Sorry, not buying that. We can't have that argument both ways. Especially since talls are meant to take longer to develop, by rights he should be struggling at that level.

Shining hands may not be a Jack R in waiting, but can he be better than Hipwood, McStay, Georgiades, Amartey? Doesn't seem out of the question.

As for Colt Seavers...you might remember him from "The Fall Guy".
