2024 Draft Thread

I totally cred the Wells wants Dodson rumour, Bully. And I reckon you're on it.

Over the years we've seen the cost of rucks increase. And their value hold. Rucks are the Corollas of the AFL market. You get your money back if you sell smart.

The price is going up but so are the refunds. Wells buys Dodson then sells Conway at a profit. (Rucks are better than Corollas. Who knew?)

Should we trade 2024#24 for 2025R1sayESS? Or buy Dodson and sell that stock at a profit? Or retain the stock? Now we're trading.

Arbitraging rucks. Is Wells smart? He used to be.
Are you suggesting we might be able to trade Samson for a top 10 pick next year?

I think he will be a fair way off the mark
I think you could be right that Richmond’s interest in Tauru is more than most think.
I would not be shocked to see us go at 6.
Then take 2 midfielders at 10 & 11.

Also see the media (well the one's that matter) are now cottoning onto the limitations of Armstrong.

Twomey has him going at 16 (including bids) but suggesting he could get through to our pick 18 (or wherever it lands - 21 or so).

Been strong all year (and probably bored everyone) that despite most phantoms having him well inside 10, we shouldn't be taking him with anything early on.

Suspect starting to get out near where clubs have had him ranked all year.

I'm not sure I'd even take him in the rookie draft. If he slides to 18, could an F1 be on the table?

The height arms race is amusing. Grand Finals are won by I50 handball chains, and amigos keep winning battles. Denuclearisation is the way.

AFL is strategically unsolved to a large degree, as full-time coaching groups only started 15 years ago. The game is riddled with sub-optimal strategies because it's young. Of course there's gold to be panned. The first club to leverage their full-time coaching group by prioritising a new age teaching environment immediately dominated, and so did countless disciples from that environment. Many strategic advantages are begging to be exploited. We stumbled upon some by accident in 2017, and some by design (thanks Dylan), but I can't wait for us to finally commit to more new school strategies.

"He thought the game would go this way, but then it went that way"

It's an essential risk to get ahead of the curve with our picks. Our 2014 was a risky year too.

Least you've downgraded him down to a star.
I’ve been touting Marshall as one of the best midfielders in this draft for quite sometime and have called it that he’ll be a star.

If we bid on Ashcroft at 1. A Marshall bid may come at around 11. I’m hoping.

That looks like the best mix of players, I think most people would be pleased with that combination.

Geelong knows best. This hard running sport was destined to feature a dedicated 200cm+ player in the centre of the team for 120 minutes. Hitouts go brrr.

A 2029 first rounder and a smaller list size for 5 years? Totally worth a first rounder today. It's just smart.

If we use this method on all of our picks, we could get 8 first rounders in every 5 drafts for the next 50 years. Is that 80 first rounders? Nice.

Geelong can also just change the rules again if someone spoils their economy by like, I don't know, finding a more optimal way to organise 18 people to put leather through sticks... but that sounds impossible, so let's take a stand and draft 8 ruckmen to start on those 80 first rounders!
