2023 mid-season rookie draft

I think he's an ok prospect. I think he's promising but I'm not buying into the hype that he is a certainty to make it.
Just so people can see the difference being argued about players in the mid-season draft:
Richmond at 4 picked Coulthard - age 22, 176cm, 69 kg. small forward.
Essendon at 9 picked Hunter - aged 21, 196cm, 93 kg. key Forward.
Richmond at 13 picked Trezise - aged 21, 188cm, 76kg. medium defender.
Swans at 15 picked Buller - aged 22 (5 days younger than Coulthard) 199cm, 99kg. key forward.

Further, already we have:
Lynch aged 30, 199cm, 100kg
Miller aged 23, 198cm, 97kg
Ryan aged 22, 206cm, 103kg.

Mick McGuane has ranked the top three players from every club under 23 in today's Herald Sun. We are 17th only ahead of the Eagles with 1 Balta 2 Ryan and 3 Ross. Port are ranked 1 with 1 Butters 2 Rozee and 3 Horne-Francis.

The difference between players in terms of where they can play based on their physiques.
Key position may not be able to play elsewhere.
Flankers cannot play as keys but may play everywhere else eg forward, back or mid like Baker Short and Graham.

I also found it interesting that all those players are relatively old at 21 or 22 and thus would have been passed over 3 or 4 times already.
Having said that, you would think they would all improve to some degree with full time, intensively coached contracts.
As an aside I recall some years ago there was talk that a new recruit had been jumping off the wrong foot in leap tests.
Change in technique, instant improvement.

All of Grimes, Short, Castagna, Soldo, Lambert, Chol, Stengle, Baker and Pickett were taken in a rookie or later draft so some improvement can be expected.
Having said that, most of those picked at that point usually fail to make the grade.

Well it seems that the news of the day is……

We didn’t pick a key forward. That would be a surprise to everyone on PRE. When did all this happen?
It must have been one of things that snuck under the radar.

Maybe we could have a dedicated thread just to let everyone know

Butters was pick 12, Rozee pick 5 and JHF #1. They’d want to be good at those picks.

Anyway, I wouldn’t put much stock in McGuanes arbitrary subjective rankings. I would put stock in the lack of rising star nominations we’ve had since 2019 though. Only two and both last year (Ralphsmith and Cumberland). Rising star nominations are a good leading indicator of talent coming through and based on that we are not in good shape.

Yep.
Good luck to Buller on the weekend.
He made the most of his one VFL appearance and took advantage of Sydney’s deficiencies in his position.

Don’t know much about the kids but thought we needed small forwards and KPF as many do here. We addressed one need and overlooked the other, but our guys would have had eyes on Buller and decided for some reason not to pull the trigger.

Let’s see how he goes stepping up a level this weekend and in the next few years before we all cull for a Matty Clarke lynching.

Regardless, this thread pre-draft night was infested with Luke Teal love, so not sure where this Buller angst has come from?

Teal named as an emergency in the twos this week. Can't even get a game unfortunately. This forum is full of rank amateurs, fantasy footballers, betting pundits and old players. We know fa about it really but it's fun thinking we do ! Lol

Mick doesn't know the meaning of team work, obviously the number of stars is more important. we won 3 premiership and played well enough in 2018 with only 5 stars, the rest were players who knew their roles and carried them out. I would not be too fuss about Mick.

I've seen a bit of Buller, his set shot kicking is......ok, he'll make a good contest, and bring the ball to ground. Goes ok in the ruck, and can play down back, which might be his best position.

Port haven't won 3 x premierships in the last 6 seasons

Interesting if we hadn’t have gone for the must recruit the tall guy ( Bradkte) we could have sparkle Narkle who appears to have stepped up a notch..

Swings and roundabouts and KB may turn out a star

Damned if you do damned if you don’t
Does narkle really offer more than what Hugo does , there are plenty of clubs that should have given him a go like WC not sure we needed him

Buller subbed off after 2 possessions in 3 quarters.

May need to pack up the pitchforks for at least another week.

Narkle did okay in a team that was flying last night. Would like to see more especially on a night where Port is struggling.
One thing Narkle is not fast, but of a plodder

Depends how we expect him to play as a forward in future gameplans. I am not sure I see a lot of flexibility here in terms of playing different forward roles, but if we go with the forward structure circa 2017, I think he will be a more than handy player getting the ball to ground for the smaller forwards.

He moves pretty damn well for a big guy and as his confidence has improved, he is showing just how athletic he is by going for the ball. I really like the fact that he tries to make things happen, and he seems to have no trouble getting to the contest in the forward line.
