2023 Draft Thread.

Readers of this thread will get sick of reading me saying this, but the more I think about it, the more I like Heath Ollington.

There are no obvious, bankable genuine KFs apart from Jed Walter, and he's off the table. Talk of Caddy, who I'd love to get, but he's 190. Of the 190s:

Nate Caddy, 190, fwd-mid, I'm a big fan and would love to trade up to get him. Its a big ask, and could happen, but until it does its wishful thinking. Correctly rated as mid first.

Logan Morris, 190, plays like a KF, but not big enough, spooks man, like scoop, I watched him in the champs and was neither impressed or unimpressed. Went back and had another look, same conclusion. Not the greatest mover to the eye, but neither was Jack, but Jack was a true KF, if you're 190 you should be better on the ground ball. Caddy is, Ollington is. Bit overrated at late first, more a mid second.

Heath Ollington, 190, Plays a lot like Caddy. played one of the best games by anyone in the champs v VM, I saw it live, got in the best, got a heap of ranking points. Only played the last 2 for the Allies, one excellent and one good. Powerful, hits the contest hard to the point where I felt a bit sorry for the oppo player, has a burst of speed. Here's the thing, doesn't seem to be rated at all, by anyone, except me. He's overage? maybe thats it? I'm a bit perplexed by it. Even if he's played poor games I haven't seen, plenty of players who are rated highly have done that. Not mentioned in any of the draft rankings, anywhere.

1. NC, looks like a gun and rated as such. We don't have the pick to get him.
2. LM, looks OK but rated pretty highly. May be there at 26.
3. HO, looks like a gun, to me at least, but not rated at all. Will be there at 26, probably at 35 (we don't have that pick but wouldn't be hard to get), maybe at 44.

My man Ollington starting to emerge from his cloak of invisibility. Mixed feelings, on the one hand I don't feel like a crazy person, on the other, he won't be as easy to get.

From Sheahans small and medium fwds rundown:

Heath Ollington
State: Tasmania
State League Club: Tasmania Devils
Community Club: North Launceston
Date of Birth: 10/12/04
Height: 190cm

Medium forward who presents particularly well as a marking target with his mobility, strong hands and courage. Was outstanding when given an opportunity to represent the Allies, seizing the moment with 21 disposals, seven marks and a goal to be one of his team’s best against Victoria Metro. Had a very consistent year with the Tasmania Devils in the Coates Talent League where he averaged 15.6 disposals and 5.4 marks as well as kicking 23 goals for the team which finished in first place on the ladder.
Hi tigersnake, young Heath Ollington is starting to get recognised now. He did do ok at the state combined with a 6mins 40sec for the 2km run. He has ran a 6mins 20 sec before. And just over 3secs for the 20m sprint.
With the over age bit he is a young over ager with his birthday on 10th of December 2004. So just missed out by 21 day to being his draft year. If you look at Aria Schoenmaker he is only 28 days younger.
His height now is around 192cm at the moment as 190cm was at the start of the season. He also played a good game in the Tasmanian statewide grandfinal took mark of the day.

I'm a very proud uncle of Heath.

Well I knew this year's draft was very shallow, but not this bad.

I just read on Foxsports that none of the top 20 prospects support the Tigers.

Good draft to have traded out of I reckon

:p

Interesting Phantom Draft. Some say this draft is weak, I don't agree, I think its just different. I've only watched the juniors more closely in the last 3 years, especially the last 2. This years draft is stronger than last years. I know its only one indicator, and an early one, but a quick look at last years and there are only 4 players from pick 20 to pick 40 to have made their seniors debut. (16 in the top 20).

Most years, and last years, it feels like their is an even downward trend-line in quality. It doesn't feel like that this year, there is standard high quality to 8-10, then a pretty even spread from 12 to 40. So if you have a pick from 11-20 you might feel you're not getting value compared to other years, but from then-on you are, particularly 30-40. Last year, I felt there was not much after 30, even 25, this year there are more players who raise the eyebrows after 25.

Another way of saying it is normally the gun prospects are top 10, very good 10-20, the good 20-30, the OK/ speculators 30-50. This year the gun prospects are top 10 as usual, then theres a pool of good from 11-40, so quality from 10-20 is down, 30-40 is up. I'm speaking here in terms of how a young player's future prospects are valued prior to the draft, not how they actually work out.

Just one enthusiastic amateur's impression anyway.

Interesting to see we are interested in Lance Collard. To get him we will definitely need to trade up.
the manufactured drama about GC stressing about when the bids come for their academy guns is such *smile*, FFS, they will match no matter what, and get their players no matter what. At worst they have to find an extra late second /early third pick or 2 next year, big deal.

Yeah, there have also been articles saying what a great job the Suns have done to gain all the extra points needed. Utter nonsense.

It is utter nonsense! The expression piece of *smile* was invented for this task. Just basic admin, an auction. How many decrepit flats in Melton am I bid for this lovely house in leafy Hawthorn. Gee, what a daunting challenge.

Ok so I've done a review of several phantom drafts and draft rankings. I've ignored any draft / ranking that is less than 40 picks and have used these to project a range and an average draft pick expectation for each player. Any player only picked in 1 of the drafts / rankings has been ignored from the final graphic, if they were undrafted in a draft / rankings I have assigned them pick 75 so that the average works better. This guide shows there are several prospects where their draft ranges are very small, and others with much wider, leaving a fairly unknown draft picture for some of these guys.
