2023 Draft Thread.

@spook per above link (pure speculation of course): "Richmond have had a third and final interview with midfielder George Stevens The expectation is that Richmond could trade up if Stevens gets to around pick 25-26 Richmonds main target is still not decided for the draft The expectation is Richmond will draft at least 2 players"
With gcs holding 3 20s picks and likely that by pick 20 that all are gone ,trading up from 29 is with either,
Adelaide 20
Saints 21
Carlton,22,
West Coast 23
Geelong 25
Carlton 28.

If we trade early with gcs and ask for pick 26,
Then give them 29,2x 60s picks,it about 110 extra points for them ,but we only move up 1 pick as gsc have 24,25 26 .

KANE MCAULIFFE

A 187cm utility from North Adelaide, McAuliffe has some fans and showcased his incredible athletic abilities at the national draft combine. He finished third in the running vertical jump and fifth in both the vertical jump and the 20m sprint tests. He was also the first South Australian across the line in the 2km time trial, finishing in a time of 6min 26sec. A member of the AFL Academy this year, McAuliffe was restricted at times by a groin injury. However, the penetrating left-footer led the way in the midfield for South Australia at the national championships and impressed across seven SANFL reserves matches in the second half of the year.

Exactly this play.
Its why i thought the 49 used in the Kosi trade could be better used (get Kosi with a future)
We couldve traded 41 49 and 65 for 24.
That wouldve been a steal.

Anyway...
So now we have 29 and 41 and 65 for 27 and 36.
Not really setting the house on fire.
Or 41 and 65 for a future 2nd
Still, if we're only looking to draft two players, probably worth looking at.

Goad is a tempter, but if we come out with two of Chedda, Simpson, Graham, Johnston, Stevens and Frejiah, plus Weckert who is tipped to go late or rookie, we'd be pretty happy.

Simpson and Graham, genuine mids and good value where we're picking. Warming to that combo.
I'm struggling to see a scenario where Suns don't take Will Graham. Just go into deficit, do another 1 or 2 chocolates for boiled lollies pick trades. They don't have to leave the house, or the pub, to make it happen.

Ashton moir ,a sth Australian kid who in his bottom age year was a pick 1 contender, but in his top age year with injuries, form etc has fallen right down, has freakish talent.

The thing is, no one really knows.

"Fallen right down" is just the journalists guessing. Ultimately a club who still rates him isn't going to say they want him which gives the illusion that he's falling down the order.

We see it ever year.... Impossible to predict.

Sonsie was a top 5 pick in his underage year.
Players develop at different rates and some even go back to the pack

KANE MCAULIFFE

North Adelaide utility Kane McAuliffe has shown his impressive athleticism in front of recruiting staff at the 2023 AFL Draft Combine.

Despite battling injuries at times throughout the year, McAuliffe placed in the top ten in three of the physical tests at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena, highlighting his well-rounded athletic base.

McAuliffe’s power and speed shone through in the 20m sprint, where he was the fastest South Australian and fifth quickest overall with a time of 2.930 seconds.

Earlier in the combine he was the first Croweater across the line in the 2km time trial, finishing in six minutes and 26 seconds.

The Rooster also featured among the top players in the country in both the running and standing vertical jumps tests, with heights of 95cm and 77cm respectively.

Both athletes for their position. Goad and MCauliffe. Strong mail from Don't Argue on both. I have no viewpoint on McaAuliffe. Good read here on him. I like 187 cm onballers.

The last Kane we drafted had an ok career.

I've said it before but I'm gunna say it again:

1) the old this-draft-is-pissweak-but-there-are-a-dozen-Dustys-next-year Trick, that the third time I've fallen for that this month. Seriously, it gets said most years, sometimes they are right, but its more that a busted clock is right twice a day.

2) Even if this draft is pissweak, and it might be, the fact that only 50 players are being taken, lets be very clear here, that is not in and of itself an indicator of that. I think if you assemble all the evidence and analyse it, its just a reflection that the odds of finding a player after the third round are very long, always have been, always will be. Clubs are looking at other ways to get spare parts and depth players, its just the smart, percentage approach that probably should have happened 5 or 10 years ago.

3) This draft might be weak, or it might just be harder to analyse due to interrupted development due to Covid, and/or the dominance of the Allies upsetting the status quo. Just one of many factors: The Vic sides were down, Vic had the worst lockdowns during critical development years of the current Vic crop. Cream rises to the top, but might be harder than usual to spot.
Sorry-not-sorry for the self quote, but Twomey either has been reading my posts (highly unlikely) or his latest missive just backs me up.

He has a bob each way on the question of quality, but he is at pains to say that there are a lot of players who could go anywhere from 15-35, and 20-40. In his latest top 30 rankings he includes 3 or 4 lists of 5 players who didn't make it but could have, (eg Lual who could go 20-40) and discusses them for longer than his actual top 30.

This isn't a really a criticism of CT, he agrees with me after all, as I've said he isn't really a talent spotter but an industry networker, which is fine. He doesn't really pretend to be anything else, much, and we all like as much inside dope as we can get.

I think in 5 or 10 years time this draft overall will be neither strong nor weak, probably par, but there will be more big hits and misses than usual. More scattergun than even trend line.

I've never seen a draft being talked about like this. There is a great 5, a very good 8-10 and after that, it's opinion-based more than other years.

Clubs are actively trying to avoid picking outside 30. I haven't seen that before.

The first part, the 5 (although more 4 for me but thats by-the-by) and the 8-10, I agree with, but that part isn't unusual, and the historical data would bear that out. But agree with the rest, which is unusual. I think we disagree a bit on how it will look in 5 to 10 years, but I'm just one mug fan. IMO, considering we haven't had a top 4 pick for 100 years and we wouldn't have again this year even without JH and TT trades, its a good year to be back at the hail mary end of the draft.
