2023 Draft Thread.

Sonsie was a top 5 pick in his underage year.
Players develop at different rates and some even go back to the pack
That's called stagnating. Beware the 16 / 17 year old super star that all the other kids equal by 18 years old and then bypass by 20 years old.

Sorry-not-sorry for the self quote, but Twomey either has been reading my posts (highly unlikely) or his latest missive just backs me up.

He has a bob each way on the question of quality, but he is at pains to say that there are a lot of players who could go anywhere from 15-35, and 20-40. In his latest top 30 rankings he includes 3 or 4 lists of 5 players who didn't make it but could have, (eg Lual who could go 20-40) and discusses them for longer than his actual top 30.

This isn't a really a criticism of CT, he agrees with me after all, as I've said he isn't really a talent spotter but an industry networker, which is fine. He doesn't really pretend to be anything else, much, and we all like as much inside dope as we can get.

I think in 5 or 10 years time this draft overall will be neither strong nor weak, probably par, but there will be more big hits and misses than usual. More scattergun than even trend line.
Can't understand for the life of me all the hype over 18 year old kids n how deep the selection prospects might be year to year. Massive development and professionalism level variations for young kids growing up. There'd be a hundred young blokes ranging from 19 to 25 each year who could be just as good at AFL level if given an opportunity. But because they aren't the brand new shiny 18 year old whizz bangs they get totally ignored year in year out.
Kane Lambert is an obvious example of what could have been if he was drafted at 18. Missed out in his draft year of 2009 and we rookied him in 2015 that's a massive six year gap of being ignored and what a player and club man he turned out to be.
There's plenty of them out there each year, unfortunately most clubs just turn the blind ignorant eye to the potential that wasn't quite ready at 18.

AFL should allow an extra spot on clubs lists for 20-25yr olds via the clubs vfl program.Once 25 they have to go on the senior list or go on the open market.

I think u should have the right to list 1 vfl player per year from your vfl.listed players by round 6 if u want.

Sonsie has had some impressive performances every year ,the kid hasn't had a good run at a preseason since he was 16,this is a huge factor and a reason he came good really later in the season this year.

Not sure about allowing extra list spots, but I sure as hell reckon clubs should get first dibs on any player on their VFL list for prospective elevation to their senior list.

Had a huge season last year and his run of senior games showed very good potential for this year. Sadly he stagnated this year and having a decent end of season at VFL level doesn't rate compared to his late run of senior games the year before. Especially when you consider the seniors were struggling this year and gaps were opening up for young potentials to step into.
Hoping he has a big pre season this summer and grabs an opportunity early in the year to claim his spot. Won't hold my breath though as I'm not convinced so far that he's gunna step up to the early speculative pre draft hype.

My view on list spots is that there should be a minimum but I don't think there should be a maximum especially if list rules retain that 95% of the salary cap has to be spent.

In terms of speeding up rebuilds, it makes sense for those at the bottom to 1 - spend more of their cap on development coaches (ie. with a middle to low range paying coach) and 2 - it gives more opportunities to find the diamonds in the rough and 3 - it means you aren't forced to spend more on duds than they are worth which is essentially what is happening at all lower placed clubs.

Maybe if they had those rules, they could set age ranges for some of the other list spots, ie. to try and scour all opportunities for finding AFL quality players.

Does anyone, hello anybody understand what never having a full preseason means at this level, it's a huge handicap especially for a running based game.

It has a huge impact for sure but it doesn’t make you lazy and disinterested and sadly at times Sonsie was just that. Hopefully he can bounce back hard and it was just second year blues.

Jed Walter in a open draft would be a certainty for pick 2, so 2517 points what would it cost Richmond or another club to get that pick.

Well gcs because he is a academy player probably won't get him called out by another club until pick 4-5,so on pick 4 that's 2034 points, so 2034 -20% discount =1627 points they need for jed walter.
So gcs give up pick 24,26 is 1514 points leaving 113 points short, do gcs pick 28 looses 113 points to become pick 32.
So for a prized pick 2,they give only picks 24,26,and a slight downgrade of a mid second pick, completely unfair and only gcs gws,Sydney Brisbane get this.

The joke is on the AFL, they reward mediocrity and hide behind a points system that heavily favours the plastic start-ups. It's no wonder supporters are drifting away from the game in droves.

Walter's name will get called at 2, there's even a rough chance at 1. But yes its a rort, always has been, but until now its been a first rounder and a second at absolute best, we may not like it, but we'll cop it. 3 top 10s and a second? Its a very tough cop. The only positive is that the mega-haul of the Suns academy has exposed it once and for all, and it seems it will trigger change.

Plastics x2 have been in the comp long enough NOT to be heavily favoured STILL when it comes to Draft concessions. Then you add North who stripped back their senior players a few years ago yet its deemed they need support from self destruction.
Your right no wonder fans are walking away.

So if we add in a couple of covid lost years, then the Sonz hasn't had a pre season for four years, surprised he's not as fat as the Gasometer or the Whale were.
It's still wait n see time for the Sonz n a few of the other kids we drafted with him, but after seeing a few of his VFL games on tv last year I've got my doubts.
