2023 Draft Thread.

I reckon the Reid talk might be to spook Essendon. They pick a couple of spots after us and might be keen to show that they’re a family club and all that by pairing him with Zach. Could offer us a sweet deal (eg their 2024 2nd for our 2024 3rd) to swap this year. We then sit back and take the player we wanted all along…

Brisbane are reportedly willing to give up all their draft picks to GCS for their #24 to obtain Reid. Brisbane's first pick (30) is one after ours (29)

Imagine sitting back having guaranteed access to four gun players stitched up prior to the draft, and clubs keep knocking on your door with new ways to help out with lowering the price you have to pay.

The club should stop pissing money into other crap and start the Richmond academy asap.
Have quality 17 yr olds playing in the TAC.
I rather have a under 18's side then a reserves side.

I can see the logic for not bidding at 1, I don't agree with it but I can understand it. But its hard to make a case for North not to bid at 2. The only reasons I suppose are to give their boy a vote of confidence, a bigger feather in the cap (same as the reason for WC not to bid at 1), but there is a flipside to that, it can send a message that the heat is on.

And also, when it comes right down to it, it won't make much difference. GC have to use 5 junk picks instead of 4 or whatever, who cares?

I used to feel pretty strongly about making them pay, keeping them honest, bid high and bid early, it can stuff me up when I'm playing 500, but the particular situation with the Suns this year, I don't think it will make much difference. They get four guns for a discount using junk picks, does anyone really care how many junk picks?

I reckon most list managers tip toe around these issues because they have to work with the same guys year after year. Every now and again you get a situation like Sydney bidding on Rowston, that was a curve ball that GWS didn't see coming but for the most part academy players or F&S recruits tend to go much later than they should. Nick Daicos went at pick 4, that was certainly not a fair reflection of his talent.

I hate the draft over two nights crap. I mean for us not being involved tonight, it's like waking up on Christmas morning and having no presents!

Yeah I get it, either pumping up a player's ego or little side deals between clubs, but I don't agree with it. Bid where you think they sit. I reckon 1 is 80-20 Reid/ Walter, but 2 would be 80-20 Walter/ McK, maybe even 100 Walter.

It would be much more ruthless, and interesting, if the price of matching bids was higher, and the timing of bids actually had an impact on a clubs ability to get later players, and hence dominoes to fall differently, but the price is effectively 3 fifths of FA, so it doesn't.

I'm the opposite, I like it because you get clarity about draft order and can plan accordingly, the invitations take all the guesswork out and clubs can get serious about live trading. It's particularly helpful in even drafts such as this one and gives recruiters a good chance at securing players they may have gone out on a limb with when finalising their individual rankings.

Even without the academy, there are bugger all players coming out of that Sunrasia region that we could have a post pick 40 dibs on. The academy’s don’t actually do that much. The talented kids make the interleague teams then into u16 Talent League then u18 TL. Spending a day every 4-6 weeks is window dressing at best.

I don't get it either. Make them pay full $$$ or Clubs have no right to complain about the rorting system. Norf are campaigners if they bid on Walter or whatever his name is at 3 instead of 2.

Can’t stomach Melbourne having two early 1st round draft picks.
Don’t think I will bother watching tonight.
Makes me ill thinking about it
