2023 Draft Thread.

When was the last time a wingman was drafted in the top 10? At that price you'd want the reincarnation of Peter Matera.

Wanganeen-Milera went close but usually they're picked off in the 15-30 bracket.

Twomey's Richmond mail from his phantom draft https://www.afl.com.au/news/1064937/cal-twomeys-2023-phantom-draft-top-30-late-picks-club-whispers

Picks: 29, 41, 64, 66 (likely to use two selections)

Richmond will start its draft on night two unless it can somehow squeeze its way up the board, which seems unlikely. A tall forward option is expected to come into the picture at some stage – could Archer Reid be available? It's a chance. Western Jets goalkicker Logan Morris is another who has been on the radar, while Central District's Liam Fawcett could also be considered late. Fawcett had a dominant start to the SANFL under-18s season and is a powerful tall goalkicker. Greater Western Victoria Rebels trio Joel Freijah, a taller wingman who had some big games early in the year, Western Bulldogs NGA half-back Luamon Lual and ball-getter George Stevens could come into considerations, the same for attacking half-back Tew Jiath, while ruckman Lachie Smith is another who may be a chance with the Tigers to likely activate two selections.

I’m not even sure of the top 10. A few look certain to be ok but others…personally, not as confident with.
The one that gets me is Leake, I’m not sold at all. No way I’d go near him.

Me too, don't see a clear fixed position. Good hands but not a pack splitter, I reckon the Fyfe comparisons clutching at straws, doesn't seem at all mercurial or game breaker material. Maybe he nails down a flank but that shouldn't be the domain of a top 10 pick.

Our Jacob Hopper trade could well work out to be for Leake and Toby McMullin. I'm pretty comfortable with Hopper in those instances.

So looking at the most recent phantoms, it looks highly likely that the 3 rucks that could have been there (Green, Goad and Edwards) will be gone by then. If Ollie Murphy slips I hope we take him (Twomey now doesn't have him in his top 30!), otherwise I think we should be taking a mid with our 1st pick. Cooper Simpson would be a good option for us, I'd love to get Charlie Edwards but looks like he'll be well gone. Archie Roberts may also be available but that position isn't really a need for us.

I think our 1st is possibly starting to look like 1 of Murphy, Simpson, Sanchez, Roberts or Reid.
Our 2nd I reckon we will just take whichever player is still there, best available but if we can get 1 of Freijah, Stevens, Morris or Johnston I'll be content.

I hope we do try and trade up a touch though. We've been pretty clear that we are only taking 2 players, we can take 3 picks to the draft, or if we trade before we might be able to get some value from 68 too (even though its not worth a lot). We would need to trade early if we are looking at the Gold Coast pick (currently 24 but will likely be about pick 30), I wouldn't want to trade though if it lost a 2024 pick I think we need to keep all those picks in hand.

Collard has been touted as a late first-rounder pretty much over the last month or so but Cal has him going at pick 30.

Lance Collard

POS: Forward
Ht 180cm, Wt 65kg, DOB 26/3/05
From Subiaco/Western Australia

The landing spot for Collard has been an interesting story in the lead-up to the draft and will be again on Monday night, with the exciting West Australian having a number of clubs visit him at his home in Perth in recent weeks. He has class, speed, can jump, kick goals and turn games on their head and finished the year with two five-goal hauls in Subiaco's colts side's finals series. Collard is tied to the Eagles as a NGA player but to get him they might have to grab him here first as they can't match a bid until pick 40.

What are people doing??
Apprantly this draft ends after pick 8 and then the darts come out.
And we all know Clarke loves throwing darts.
With no pressure he will select 2 quality kids.
If he had 2 top 20 picks they would've been gone in 3 years time.
This is when Clarke shines.

I read Twomey mention this kid as a potential target for us. I haven’t heard his name at all until now.

Liam Fawcett
State: South Australia
State League Club: Central District
Community Club: Pooraka
Date of Birth: 22/04/05
Height: 197cm

Strong marking tall forward who is mobile and a reliable set shot for goal in clutch moments. Averaged 15.4 disposals and 6.6 marks in 16 games for Central District at under 18 level this year and booted 32 goals, including one with the last kick to win a final. Also represented South Australia in two games at the National Championships and booted two goals against the Allies. Tested soundly at the state Draft Combine with his 3.08 seconds for the 20m sprint and 6:38 for the 2km time trial both strong performances for a key forward.

For the draft watchers out there what are your thoughts? His write up seems like a player who should go top 30.
